Just practice. You'll be fine. Focus, and if you have nervous energy, use it in your performance if it is appropriate. I did that in drama class once and got a standing ovation!

When you're singing, closing your eyes or looking just over everyone's head helps too.

Never fear. What's the worst that could happen?? What you've already mentioned and that's not the worst by far. (have someone have a heart attack while your performing, nothing seems that bad anymore after that -true story)

ANOTHER TRUE STORY:
This past weekend I went to a producers house to audition to do some back up work on a new LP.

Talk about SCARED, I croaked, but luckily they realized what was going on.

After a minute a friend of mine took me outside and said, "Are you trying to mess this up? All the singing in the car on the way here and now you wanna screw it up?!"

She said just remember- Close your eyes at first and sing to me or to BOOTSIE.

SOOO0 long story short find one kind face in that auditorium and blow! OR Think of something you love to do, that doesn't make you nervous(after you know you have the words down pat) and sing your heart out! I'm sure you'll do just great!!!

I realize you don't know me from, well, anyone. BUT I know how you feel. I got that job doing back up (by singing to my friend and my long lost cat!)

GOOD LUCK!!!
Imperially Yours,

I agree with Vina about practise. I'm not a singer, and luckily for any prospective audience I've never sung 'in public', but I know what you're going through - I have had the same bad feeling for presentations that I have to give for my job. I've found through experience that the best way to get round it is to PRACTISE PRACTISE PRACTISE, until you can do it in your sleep. The more confident you are with your repetoire the less you have to worry when having crowds in front of you.

The other thing I really recommend (and this will help you get over the audience aspect of it) is to really believe in yourself - in other words make sure you KNOW that what you have to say/sing IS GOOD, and that other people WILL appreciate it.

Good luck!

Here is the other thing; everyone makes mistakes while performing, it's just how you deal with it. Don't stop everything because of a wrong note, just keep going because chances are that nobody noticed but you.

Good Luck!

Here's something I found out myself. Not sure if it'll make sense to you but here goes. The part of you that is nervous is not the part that's going to sing, right? There's a singer in you who knows exactly what to do. And then there's maybe a thinker in you who says "but what if..?" Just trust the singer and let him do the job.
