USING EFFECTS IN MULTITRACK SITUATIONS

When using an eight track recorder with only two effect sends, what is the best approach to using a compressor,reverb,gate,enhancer?...Please show a typical hook up or diagram a layout of how to achieve optimum results with these units in a small home studio application. Is it best to link the units in sequence for the overall sound or use some on the recording and some on the mixdown?

Depends on your board Tal.

Basically, identify those things that you'll use across the board: Reverb and Chorus usually. Use THOSE for the send/return auxs, and then use the other items on a track-by-track basis, in-line. Of course, the drawback there is that once you've commited to disk, it's done and you can't go back and undo the compression. But usually, for me at least, reverb and chorus are the two things I dabble with constantly, during mixdown.

I guess I would have to say the best thing to do is run your "dry" sounds through some FX software and then either record them back onto your 8 track recorder or use your recorder as a mixer to go into a computer. I really suggest the latter if possible. if not like I said just get any type of FX software to run your sounds through and record it back onto your mixer. It might not be the easiest way but if done correctly, you can get good sounds. If you need me to further explain anything, just ask! :+)
