Right now I'm working with the Proteus 2000 and the Roland jv1080.

I'm looking at the Proteus 2500...anyone have this?

Can anyone recommend any sound module that's worth getting?

Thanks for your help guys!

Man, I want some new sounds also, but I just ain't got the money to buy a new board. I like Korg's line of stuff. I really like the Korg Karma, but I need to save some money.

Peace,
JD

depending on the style of music u prefer, the EMU modules are pretty nice and inexpensive. The MO"PHATT is my favorite with the hip hop and r & b sounds. They have a selection of modules for different styles. The keyboards are pretty cheap as well ($599).

With the JV2080 they slide into the back. Really easy. The slots are in the back, you don't have to take it apart. There are 7 bays and one in the front. Each card has usually has about 1500 sounds each.

I have the Zoom 123, and the MRS-1044. BOTH have HORRID song-creation procedures. I mean, DISGUSTINGLY horrible. used to be easy to create a song based on patterns, but Zoom has managed to turn it into a nail-biting painful experience.

In addition, while their drumkits tout an amazing number of sounds, your ability to select those sounds is limited to THEIR determination of the drumkits. You can't pick a snare from here and a bass drum from there. You have to pick a kit that's been pre-built. And they're HORRIBLE. Every kit has a rim-shot with enough reverb to sound like it's in a well somewhere. Hand claps are NEVER loud enough.

IF you were able to mix the volume/panning of the individual sounds, like say, on the Alesis HR-16, THEN I'd say it's a great product they're making. But as it stands, it's a toy.

In reading the description of the 323, it SAYS 128 drumkits - 64 Preset, 64 User-programmable. If that's TRUE - like, if you can decide where YOU want the toms to be, (instead of the HORRID hi-tom, hard left, mid-tom, dead center, low-tom, hard right) then, sure, I'd say, go for it, get it.

But I'm willing to bet they're still sucking ass in the drumkit customization department. SOME of the sounds are fantastic, but again, you'll find you're only able to work with one hand tied behind you - cuz while you'll LOVE the snare, the hi-hat will sound like air escaping from a tire. Or the cow bell will sound like it's in an elevator shaft.

I continue to return to the HR-16 as the perfect design for a drum machine. Even though it's 15 years old now, they got it right. If only they'd put newer drum sounds in that old machine - it even blows their SR-16 model away.

But that's just me.

I DID read somewhere that Zoom was working on an algebra-based song programming style - where you say, there's a ABACAB song style, each part is 1-2-3, now make the song... if it does THAT, I'll be impressed.

Anyhow. Good luck. Sorry to rant. That machine (Zoom 123) had such great potential and let me down in such a miserable way.

What about "groove boxes"?

there's a few rolands on ebay that are selling for kinda cheap.

anyone have the 303 or 707?

i found them impossible to program a beat in comparison to a simple drum machine like a boss dr

is there something i'm missing?

does anyone have the BOSS DR 770?

THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSES BY THE WAY GUYS!

i got the 303 and the 505... Easy to use but they are very limited sound wise. I just ended up hooking mine up to fruityloops studio 4 and using it as a controller. If you're not playing live use fruityloops or reason for ya drums... if you are then i suggest the 505 rather than the 303 groovebox... unless u can manage to find the old tb303.

I had the dr5 for a little while and ended up taking it back. Programming ANY Boss drum machine is like forcing pennies into a comb. Whatever that means. Their system of programming is horrid. I'm telling you - go buy an HR16 - they're going for $25 on ebay.

Moog synths are cool. I've heard nords are cool sounding as well.

Moog synths rock... but over in the uk everyone wants one so picking one up second hand is getting harder and harder...and more and more expensive...slimsynth on fruity is the closest i've got to a moog yet...moogs and juno sounds a plenty in this program... damn i should get paid for advertising their product... but hey what a program...I use fruity for the sounds... Acid pro 4 for the sequencing and cubase for the final mix down... Just not enough musicians where I live...shit there's only one store and 50 other houses... need to move i think...lol
