From The Hits tab book:

In the key of B major

Intro and Verse:

Emaj9 / B(Add C#)/D# Emaj9 |
Emaj9 / B(add C#)/D# / |
Emaj9 B(addC#)/D# Emaj9 G#m7(add C#)|
G#m7(addC#) / E69/D# F#6/G#|

all I'm livin for ... ends on G#m7(addC#)

Emaj7 Don't wanna pressure you baby D#m7
but F#/G# all I ever wanted to do G#m7(addC#)

into verse pattern again for chorus IWBYL etc...

That's one of those damn Prince songs with such complicated chords... how the heck should one play that on guitar?

But it's great of course that he has such a harmonical sense.

I know some (but I'm really not a genius on guitar), but many of his chords are just to tough for me. My extra short fingers don't make it easier, too.

And this song is originally a piano-song anyway.

I know what you mean - I'm blessed with a similar predicament. Still, I guess Django managed!

And this song is originally a piano-song anyway.[/quote]I think that's probably the secret - learn the piano. (still doesn't necesarily help the short finger syndrome - but it's a step in the right direction.)

A "simple" way to play it and have it sound OK is to play the main body like this:

E-D-E-E

D-E-E-B

E-D-E

Bmaj

And make the chords this way:

E: Just bar the ninth fret of the third, fourth and fifth strings. I use my ring finger for this one.

D: Just bar the seventh fret of the third, fourth and fifth strings. I use my first finger for this one, so I can "slide" or "hammer" between the E and D chords.

B:

|-X---
|-7---
|-8---
|-9---
|-X---
|-X---

Bmaj7:

|-9---
|-7---
|-8---
|-9---
|-X---
|-X---

What makes this song is the funky scratching you do with the pick. Have fun!
