2funkE 4 U: please check out my funky tracks...

http://www.mp3.com/2Funky

Hi fellow musicians,

I've put up three funky tracks on the link above. They're just raw demo's I made with a friend of mine, but I would like to hear what y'all think of the songs. Please post your comments, I'm very curious to hear your opinions and suggestions!

Greetz,

Funkaholic

Very Nice! Who's playin what?

these are WAAAAY funky. 1983 all the way!! Definitely gotta get one of these on the next NFO release.

They all sound a lot like the Bar Kays, Jesse Johnson and Prince of course. The last one reminds me of Harold Faltemeyer - remember the axel foley theme? Right... same feel.

Ay man, I wouldnt have known that these were recent!!! They sound str8 out underground Chicago 80's funk. Shake It is very very Zappa influenced.

"Ive Got 2 Get Down" sounds like a first tracker 4 an album u may want 2 do. it sounds ok, but kinda lost my attention a bit, i dunno, maybe i was just out of mood...

"Funkstramental" OOOH Reminds me of Jesse Johnson!smile Sounds so good! It is beggin 4 lyrics, u gotta cum up wit sumthin!

overall: I think they are very cool. Are very very retro and stuff and u sound like u know what u r doin, especaislly. R all ur sounds like this?

Hey funkaholic! Is "Shake It" the track you were trying to email me, months ago? Sounds great! So funky. Groovy baseline. Excellent drum programming. Yeah, this is early 80's funk. This builds up nicely, doesn't get redundant at all. Lots going on. Killer chords, man. Good stuff.

Funkstramental: again, your drum programming kicks ass! I dig the guitar part too. Very cool sounds. What are you using? Awe, this is very funky. I love it! Ok, I just checked the info section on the mp3.com page so I see what you're using. Work that Nord, baby!

Get Down: This one didn't grab me right away like the first two. Maybe I just like the starkness of the others better. I'm gonna listen a second time. Ahhh, this is a grower. This one would be good on the dance floor. I can see it now, people trying to pick each other up while groovin to this tune. Yeah!

Thanks people for the compliments, I am very pleased with them! party

To answer your question, otan:
I did most of the drum programming (lots of Linn sounds as you've probably noticed) and the guitar parts. Because I'm not a guitarplayer we had to sample the best parts I played and created new patterns using the sampler. This worked out quite OK in the end.

Slap bass, synth programming and sampling by my friend Ingmar.

All the synth parts are by either one of us, whoever feels a nice bassline or chord coming up just plays it.

It's all very retro stuff indeed, but that's just the sound we both like a lot. But we're gonna try to translate this old school sound into something sounding more like 2003. Maybe we'll put some other songs up later...

Wow is this cool! It inspires me to get some funk recorded.

My stuff is blues based just because that's all I can get my friends to play. Looks like I'll have to make my own funk.

What are you using for the vocals on "Shake it"? It sounds like a voice box but I'm not sure.

Love the Linn and just all of it. It's only retro if its old and this isn't so FUNK ON!

Don't worry Vina, how could you jack a thread by pointing out good music to others! wink

That Manki album, is it available somewhere?

only reason I haven't checked out your tracks JD is I'm leary about registration with Mp3. Do you find that you get bombarded with junk mail after registering? I want to hear your cuts, but not sure about signing up.

I only get emails from them advertising stuff that they've partnered with... so it's mp3.com-related stuff, usually pertaining to musicians.

And hey, it ain't that hard to delete the spam.

FUNKAHOLIC IS DOPE! Man, I just listened to the 3 tracks on mp3.com, and I am very impressed. Very early 80's funk all the way! I really like "I've Got To Get Down": the chorus loop with the funky synth doing the solo, and the slap and kick bass throughout the song, and of course I like the vocoder and the main bass synth. "Shake It" is really nice, and "Funkstramental" is really cool with the linn drum very noticeable. This is the sound I would love to hear more of now- I am just looking for ways to make this sound come back in the mainstream and to make it blend more with the current population. I think Justin Timberlake has done a little of that on that song of his, and Missy Elliott is doing that on her CD with old school hip-hop and r&b, but no one has been absolutely FUNKY yet, and that is what I want to bring.

Nice stuff!

Peace,
JD

That's exactly what I want as well. I see these three tracks I did with my friend as some practising for the real work I want to do: the translation of the early 80's electronic funk sound to something sounding more modern, more 2003. But I find it very difficult to make this translation. If I work together with Ingmar it sounds like 1983 all the way and if I try on my own (using Reason, Cubase and my Ensoniq ASR-X Sampler) it just doesn't sound raw and funky enough.

But I'm gonna keep on trying to bring back the funk into modern music and I hope one day I'll be able to create something that satisfies my expectations.

Thank you guys for the feedback, it is very much appreciated! nod

Hopefully, we can just bring the funk back as raw as it ever was, and not have to make any changes! Maybe if enough people open the door, we can just funk on in!

Peace,
JD
