haiku me haiku you

A haiku is a type of poem that had its origin in Japan. The poets there would make trips out to the wilderness to meditate and write these poems which had very strict rules: no title, three lines only, the first and last lines were to have exactly five syllables, while the middle line was to have seven syllables. Which made the whole poem have exactly seventeen beats and said something true about the beauty of the outdoors. In modern times haikus are now written about any subject. So what follows is my very first haiku, which took me about 10 minutes to write. It will be in a larger font in the very next post.

mentally split two

This haiku is about the assassination of John Lennon on December 8, 1980 and how shortly afterward I was diagnosed as a manic-depressive ("mentally split two"). Many years have passed since and I'm okay.

UNDERPLAYED

Once there was a man

Whose songs were vital to the soul

Music still makes us whole

Sorry, purplethunder3121, but the rules of haiku writing is that the poem does not have a title, and that the first line has five syllables, the second line has seven syllables and the third line has five syllables. Your second line has eight syllables and your third line has six syllables.

Very nice, but your first line has six syllables... razz My mistake was counting words, not syllables. Haven't done Haiku in years...a great exercise in minimalism...
