Think on this... Getting from good to great.
Circle one: We already know what we are passionate about, lets just get passionate about a common goal. Circle two: Let's find out what makes us better than the current system of music and come up with a good common description and run with it. Circle three: Replace "economic engine" with something along the lines of "self-sustaining" engine. Let's build our foundation so that it will take care of itself without costing us a lot of money. Yes we want to make this free for everyone, but we also have to make it as close to free for us as well. Just a basic marketing base that can be applied to just about anything. This is the dawning of a new funk revolution

I was thinking internet radio. NewPowerRadio?, Joe Kelly?
Things that are right in front of us, right now. Maybe in the next month or so, after we have some substance to the sites and how we present this, then we target online magazines and such. First we need a story to tell and show them the fruit of the laybor. This is the dawning of a new funk revolution

I Have a Really Good Story. also maybe we can plan an online release party were people can chat with the artists involved. maybe we can get some CD's to schools. Music Schools and so on. there has got to be a way where we can show futur members of the revolution that this is a GREAT altertitive to the "MUSIC INDUSTRY" [This message was edited Wed Apr 30 9:19:45 PDT 2003 by sexaftertaste]

The thoughts above are to help illustrate everyones ideas into a collective goal. (where all the circles meet)
silly maybe, but it's simple. Get passionate about New Funk Order Take this collection of ideas to the world and make it the best Keep it free. (for them and us, or at least very minimal) And build this foundation to where it feeds itself, or needs little, but gives a lot, whatever. Point being, make the website work for you. i have a question...
in a previous post it was said that we should have a spokesman or spokesperson who will handle the press via interviews and such. should that person be one of the artist or should it be someone who is connected in some way with us. someone who is more experienced with representing a collective. i have someone in mind who i think just might work for all of us and is already in part associated with NEW FUNK ORDER do u want to know who?

This is amazing. I can't believe how many ideas people have and how far they want to take it with promotion. I'm dying to know who our Fairy Godfather/mother is, lol.

think of the name "newfunkorder" as the collector of your ideas.
I'm just serving as a mediator. plain and simple. This is the dawning of a new funk revolution

I would, however, advise that we focus who is with us and this site right here at prince.org as well as the other brother/sister sites. That alone could take a week. After we build some substance to this great idea, we should present it to the outside. watch it grow, yo? This is the dawning of a new funk revolution

While the internet is free, driving interest is far from free. We've definitely got to work on methods for driving up public interest in this.
And, sexaftertaste, unfortunately, no, everyone is not our target audience. Old ladies that dig Dean Martin are not going to get into what we have to offer, nor will your scream-metal-core-rap-grind pierced growlers. Well, SOME might, but no, I think there's definitely a target audience here: - Prince fans definitely - Funk fans - New/Indie Music Supporters (like MP3.com members) - Musicians would be interested in the means by which this all came together And I'm only thinking from a musician's perspective. There's an audience out there of folks that don't play a lick of music but would definitely groove on the music that's in this collection: - Urban/Black Radio Station listeners - Jazz? - Rock? What kind of cross over market does that include? Think of TV commercials - Beer commercials use funk, so do cars - geared towards the 20-30 party crowd, nightlife, etc. So where to THOSE folks go online, and how can we get a piece of their attention? WITHOUT paying money? Discussion Boards. If we target 3 or 4 discussion boards outside of Prince.org to drum up a discussion of what's going on - either in a guerlla/subversive tactic "Hey - did you hear about this CD over at newfunkorder.com?" OR as an up and up discussion about the project from your perspective... ANYTHING to generate other's interests in talking about it... I would almost suggest that three people tackle a board at the same time, playing into the discussion - cuz you know how it works, if NOBODY responds, NOBODY reads it. Those are probably the best places to get word of mouth going. The goal now would be to figure out WHICH boards would be best to target right now. Does MTV have one? Rolling Stone? Spin? etc. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

I think that's a very good idea OTAN, the one about the forums.
I maybe can work. | |

Hi again. Been checkin out these posts on NFO and lovin' the NRG i'm getting. Very positive, like the self-sustaining idea. I've done quite a bit of int. marketing for music w/ bands i've worked w/ in the past and perhaps can be of some help. Unfortunately, free sites for downloading music are getting more and more scarce. When i started working w/ mp3.com they were paying artists rather well, and the band i was with at the time, Alex Torres y Los Reyes Latinos were top in Latin and actually made it to the top 50 on ALL of mp3.com, and in the first yr. the band brought in over 25k from mp3.com. Since then, they've started charging both artists AND consumers, and numbers in general have fallen dramatically with the majority of artists.
When i was doing the marketing thing more regularly, i found MANY music sites where you can post for free, and downloads are free for listeners as well. Many of the same sites also have message boards where you could hype the tunes as has been mentioned in this post. There are also a bunch of sites to sell the CD's on as well, beyond Amazon.com, that give you good percentages on your sales. I mention this because it does cost $$$ to produce music, and am thinking that sales would be part of the "self sustaining" model you have presented (which i really like). From what i've learned about this "business", and even if it's free music, it's still a business, it's all about hype, real or ficticious. Just to illustrate, heard a great story bout Nora Jones and the guy that wrote all the tunes she won her numerous grammy's for. Aparently, the song writer never got paid for any of his work til AFTER the Grammy's and a big publicity thing came out about it. However, the inside scoop by way of Hollywood Records is that the writer was in on the whole thing, and the "controversy" about him NOT getting paid was previously arranged to further hype Nora previous to the Grammy's. Just a side note, the Grammy's are meaningless!!! nothing more than trading of votes and nominations between NARAS members. I've gotten off track. Anyhow, the NFO tunes i checked out on mp3.com are great. Nice beats, good lyric content, etc.. WOuld love to be a part of this in any way i can be of help. Also, seems this is based out of NY and i'm in upstate, Albany area. I usually play in the city a few times a yr. and perhaps we could get together sometime. Looking forward to hearing from some of you. Keep on puttin' out the tunes, and eventually someone's gotta take notice. Persistence and consistency!!! Kevin H.

Thanks latjazz1,
Actually, everyone involved is from just about everywhere. go to http://www.newfunkorder.com to see what we have put together in the last few weeks and far from done. we're just putting it up as the ideas come right now. It would be of great help if you could provide some url's to these resources you spoke of. Thanks, NFO

Circle one: Passionate about Funk Music.
Circle two: What makes us better than the current system is that we are keeping it free and out of the system. Circle three: "self-sustaining engine" possibly being a merchandise section, yet keeping the music free. Jason?
