check out this new artist inspired by Prince!

Hi everyone. I am a singer as well as a huge Prince fan. I am very similar to Prince in that I strattle the fence between R&B, rock and funk. I have just released my debut album and one song in particular was inspired by Prince. I would love for you to check out my tunes and let me know what you think. "Alone Tonight" sounds a lot like 80's Prince. It's the same vintage as "Manic Monday", especially the melody like in the verses. Go to http://www.mp3.com/Dayna_Steele

OK all you Prince fans, let me know what you think. Thanks so much and I look forward to chatting with you!

Thanks so much Kodjo. I actually just put a new song online that has a Prince edginess to it. It's called "It's Been Too Long". I'd love some more feedback. You can check it out at http://www.mp3.com/dayna_steele
Thanks so much! Are you a musician or a Prince fan or both?

Wow, the intro to the song shocked me (surprised me at least). Another fine pop song.

If you don't mind the questions: How old are you and how long have you been in the music business?

Hi lovemachine,

Thanks for checking out "It's Been Too Long". That song goes over really well live!!! I am 27 and I have been doing music all my life, but used to be a "classical" singer and have been in this "business" only a short time. (Very different singing "It's Been Too Long" than an aria!!!) I took the last two years to write and record my album and have only just released it last month...so I gues you could say I'm very new, just out of the gate. What about you? Are you a musician too or a Prince fan or both?

Wow Kodjo, Thanks for such a nice note! It's great to hear feedback and I knew Prince fans would relate to what I'm doing! I don't like to stay in one place for too long. In answer to your question, though I'd like to say "yes", the truth is that the sex sounds in "It's Been Too Long" are samples from a porno. It's tough work, but someone's got to do it!

Anyway, I would love to hear from you and your friends. You can email me at info@daynasteelemusic.com. Feedback is always much appreciated in this strange business. Thanks for voting, really, thank you! I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Hi DreZone.
You have quite an impressive website. You've got lots going on. Thanks for checking out my music. I'm glad you liked it. I see we are coming from similar places as we are both into Prince, Stevie Wonder, Maxwell and D'Angelo. Those are all great people! I like the songs from your new release on mp3.com. I look forward to hearing more from you! Take care.

Dayna,

I'm thinking about recording my own album too. I have written almost thirty songs, and I play the piano. I just need access to some recording equipment or a software program and I'll probably start... wish me luck. If you have any suggestions about how to go about breaking into the biz, let me know, I'd really appreciate it.

Hi jtgillia,

I'm so happy to hear from you. Thanks for checking out my music. So you dapple in music yourself? Sounds great! When I recorded my first (and only) album, I decided to invest in some recording equipment instead of shelling out the bucks to another studio. So I recorded this album with Pro Tools LE and a good neumann mic and a good avalon pre amp. I've now managed to build up a whole recording studio with my musical partner and it was a good move. Now we are looking to upgrade to the better Pro Tools HD so that our next album can be even better and more in line with what's on the radio. Plus we've turned it into a recording studio business. If you have any questions about equipment for home recording, feel free to ask! As far as advice on breaking into the music biz, I'm still looking for that myself as I'm relatively new at this. All I know is that if you really love it, and put everything into it, there will be returns! That's what I'm doing now and at times it can be scary, but I know it's worth it! Look forward to hearing from you soon,
Dayna

Dayna,

Thanks for the advice! I'm in school now for my second degree in Computer Science (but my first degree was in Music Education). Thus, since I'm still a poor student, I'm basically borrowing some recording software from a friend (I think it's called Cakewalk, or something like that). I think I would probably record it on that with just 8 tracks (lead voice, guitar, piano, drums, bass, violin, and 2 tracks for harmony vocals). If it turns out really good, I'll consider sending copies to some record companies or something. I'll have to pick up a Music Business 101 book!

By the way, being into Sting and Prince both, I knew I had to hear your music. Great music taste often leads to great music!

Hi jtgillia - sounds like you have it mostly figured out. I think cakewalk will suit your purposes just fine. So what happenned to the music ed thing, did you decide it wasn't what you wanted to do? I have a Masters degree in education and a bachelors in music. I guess after I got my bachelor's I wasn't sure I wanted to sing opera (glad I made that decision) so I got a Masters in something different, but have now finally found what I really want to do so I have returned to my music routes. Though it's nice to have this Masters degree to help support my music making. What are you thinking of doing with your computer science degree? Good luck with your recording! If you have a chance in the next few days, I am in the STADIUM at http://www.makeastar.com and I need people to vote for me so I can hopefully win. The song that is in competition (and won the first three rounds) is It's Been Too Long. I'd really appreciate the support if you have the chance. It's been great to hear from you. Talk to you soon,
Dayna

Metalbabe669 - Thanks so much for your feedback! I wish you luck with the home recording and hope that my emails to you with info prove to be somewhat helpful!

Dayna...Excellent song, "Alone Tonight"...Loved the vocals, the song, and the production!! I am a musiccian myself...I have been solo for the last year or so, and have a digital home studio myself. Is that a live drummer? Anyway, very good stuff...Don't ever give up, you are very good!!! I am 33 and still going at it. You are always learning new stuff along the way no matter what age. I got to open up for Jewel a few years ago, and have had regular rotation on radio, so I know what it takes. I am releasing my debut solo CD in December, and will post my updated MP3 site up here as soon as I have the new tunes up there. You keep it up girl!!...I am going to listen to all your tunes and tell people about you...All the best, Good luck with your CD... Very happy for you!...

Hi sensitivemthrfker,

Thanks for your input. So where are you located in this big world? In answer to your question, the drumming on "Alone Tonight" is live drumming, by the producer/co-writer and engineer of the project Benny Steele. I appreciate your support in spreading the word. I am very new to this particular music business (used to be classical) and am still learning the ropes and how to get through all the crap. Hanging in is a must! I'd like to know more about who you are and what type of music you do, etc. Please fill me in.
