You can write in so many different styles: free-form (doesn't have to rhyme), plotted, spoken-word, rhymes, poetry, you can rhyme every word or rhyme the words at the end of sentences, or at the end of every third sentence, it really doesn't matter- it's about what you are feeling. Just flow with it!

Co-sign. I read that Ray Davies gives songwriting masterclasses. He makes his students write songs wih no more than five words.
And don't steal melodies, but listen closely to how your favorite songwriters build their songs: how many different sections are there, how many times do they repeat etc.

Heyo,
I got a few worthless tips for ya.
Most everyone else has nailed it on the head except for stealing, thats not cool.
1. Turn off your computer.
2. Dont tell anyone any of your coolest ideas until you trademark or copywright it. And by the way, unfortunately, mailing it to yourself dont really count anymore.
3. Think "Timeless" when your writing. Dont write about things that time date your self, so, someone 10 years old or 100 years old could enjoy you.

You can reference things going on in time for people to learn or have insight on, but ive learned time dating your self is a bad idea. Write when your the happiest or the saddest. Being BI-polar REALLY helps with this. lol

And do it atleast 10 minutes a day and dont judge it until you have slept and read it / listened to it again, its always good the same day you record ...well, not always....

AND, for myself, when i go into my recording / writing modes , i refuse to listen to other music for about 4 weeks, so i dont accidentally write somthing that is just stuck in my mind... cool

OOOH YEAH
Its a Known fact the best song writers steal from their influences,
not steal whole phrases per-say but a certain style,
IE Prince + Joni Mitchel = The Ballad of Dorothy Parker
or
Hypnotiq Warrior + Prince + Jack Keruoac = The Return Of Dorothy Parker , coming to a computer near you very soon
(had to do a lil promo lol )

Don't give me that borrowing crap, Its stealing,
Its not Vanilla Ice Stealin

But its stealing,
The Best alway steal (doesn't have to be from other song writers too)
IE Sting + Vladmire Nabakov = Don't Stand So Close to Me

We Steal... lol lol lol

Then lets see mmm

All these artist are thiefs then

The Beatles
Chubby Checker
elton john
Elvis Presley
Frank Sinatra
Prince
Led Zeppelin
The Doors
Queen
Madonna
Michael Jackson
Aerosmith
AC/DC
David Bowie
Eagles
Bob Dylan
Joni Mitchel
Phil Collins
U2
Pink Floyd
The Rolling Stones
Stevie Wonder
The Who
Black Sabbath
R.E.M.
Counting Crows
KISS
Elvis Costello

I can go on and on...
But out of all of them John Lennon is probably the biggest thief.
every song that was composed by him started from someone elses composition...
