O.K., it's finally my turn. . .

I've been lurkin' like a mutha on this board and I'm finally ready to show a bit of my stuff.

I've started a band. After years of playing *in* 'em, I've decided to take the reigns.

Tell me what ya think: Introducing--from Detroit, Michigan--MUSIQUE NOIRE!

www.musiquenoire.com

I need some feedback and y'all are the best. Our MySpace will be up later this week.

Thanks,
Michelle

Thank you, thank you! As for the string arrangements, I don't really write them, but I do have a friend who hooks me up whenever I need them. Not that I couldn't do them, but it's a lot of time that right now I don't have (I'm in school finishing up a Recording Engineering Certificate, among the rest of my thousand jobs biggrin )

Mostly classical, though amateur. For the last couple of years I've played with the Punk Rock Orchestra. My dream this year is to branch out into new styles, though, including jazz and gypsy. I just got an electric violin and am trying to learn to improvise and listen for keys etc (no sheet music) but it's hard to dedicate myself when I've got to pay rent and have another artistic career going on too. I'm sure you know how it is. But seriously, I would love to do what you do. I saw Regina Carter perform last year and really loved it.

Regina and I are friends. I put together the music for her recent wedding. She is phenomenal and has been an inspiration to me for many years. I'm actually fairly new to jazz. I began studying seriously about 4 and a half years ago, even though I'm a lifelong listener of jazz. I still have a ways to go. Since you're in California, check out the Mark O'Connor string workshop (if you haven't already) in San Diego. It is phenomenal for people like us who are learning other styles of violin playing. I went the summer of '04 and had a blast, learning jazz, latin, celtic, klezmer, and rock. Go to www.markoconnor.com and click on "Camps and Conferences". I found the camp to be a good way to begin learning improvisation, but they really don't do much in the way of theory. You do get to study with some of the best violinists in the country, though! I ended up taking a jazz theory class at Wayne State University in Detroit with Matt Michaels (major jazz pianist and excellent teacher), and I've studied privately with others as well (violinists, guitarists, pianists, etc.)

The Punk Rock Orchestra, huh? Sounds like a fun group!

Do you know anything about the Jazz School in Berkeley? (It's just down the street from me, and looks pretty interesting)

The Punk Rock Orchestra, huh? Sounds like a fun group!

The PRO is a blast, although I'm taking a break so I can explore other ways of playing. It was a bit unchallenging although very healing after years and years of classical training and all the baggage that comes with it. There are some sound clips and craziness at www.punkrockorchestra.com

I really like the sound of your group. If you ever play in San Francisco, please let me know.

O.K., can I tell you that I'm extremely JEALOUS that you have the JazzSchool down the street from you!? I don't have any personal experience with it, but if we had something like that here in Detroit, I'd be all over that place. I've perused the website--some of those workshops I wish I could attend!

I checked out the PRO! Love it! I especially love the reviews: "Shocking!" lol lol

Thanks for the kind words--we definitely plan to travel and the west coast is not out of the question. I'll keep you posted!

I agree, those classes at the Jazz School are enticing. There's one for classical musicians who want to learn improvisation among others. But dang, I need some extra cash to afford that place.

I live across the street from a great little coffee house too www.freightandsalvage.org that features ethnic, world folk music every night of the week. Unfortunately, I can't seem to afford that either.

I'll be in Minnesota next summer if you guys can make it over there. batting eyes

Frank told me to go check this thread out last night. WOW!

NuPwr319: WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN All my org days? Completely floored by what I heard. Next year I'll have to book you back to back with Frank's band at the next Street Painting Festival: http://streetpaintingfestivalinc.org

I need to hear more now. Please.

heartbeatocean: I am so ashamed to say that today was the first time I checked out your tunes. I remember reading about the concept some time ago, but never got around to your website. Totally kick ass! I don't think I've heard any of those songs before by the original artists so that was a double treat for me.

Which one are you?

Tee, hee! I feel like such a celeb! Violins rule!

Thanks for the kind words. I've been on the .org for as long as there was an .org (I was even on the precursor to the .org, The Prince Mailing List). This is the first time I finally felt ready to step out on my own, musically. As for more music--well, we're working on it. We plan to be back in the studio in the coming months. I need to get some basic recording equipment, too.

It's funny you picked that "laughing in the studio" picture--that's pretty typical me, with my mouth hangin' open! lol

The street festival sounds like a blast. Right up our alley, no pun intended!
