I DON'T WANNA GO DEAF!

I play in a rock band pretty regularly (three gigs this week ,usually at least three a month) and ...

I DON'T WANNA GO DEAF!!! bawl

I tried ear-plugs, as in soft foam thingies that you have to roll between your fingers, push in and wait for them to expand again, but...

man, I just can't hear what I am playing properly with the damn things in.

Anyone ever use anything effective that:~

a) Actually protects your ears
b) Allows a decent tone through for adequate musical use
c) Don't cost a frickin fortune?

Help!

AFAIK, the only things that really work are the expensive custom made ear plugs (or of course your volume dial wink). The soft foam thingies hardly work at all, they can even work counter productive: The frequencies with the most energy in them will only be filtered a little bit if at all (overal damping is only about 5% iirc), but because you hear everything muffled people tend to turn up their amps to make up for it.

thumbs up! Thanks for the advice.

I especially agree that turning down is a simple but effective solution. We play small venues and are FAR TOO DAMN LOUD for what is actually required. Partly due to our second guitarist being veyr hard of hearing, possibly due to playing rock music for so long..disbelief

The custom plugs are £160 over here, which is very expensive, BUT if I had to put a price on my hearing, £160 wouldn't even scrape the surface.
