HELP: Working on "Hold Me" (by Sheila) So the thread about whether P can read notation got me to try and work on a song by ear (which I'm still just experimenting with).
I'm trying "Hold Me" by Sheila E on her 3rd album. I have some basics of the chord progression I think.... but not sure. The verse seems like it starts a with ii-V (Dm9-G13) progression with the root staying on the D. First 8 Bars: 1. Dm9 "I've Tried....." 2. G13/D "So many Times' 3. Dm9 "To erase the memo-" 4. G13/D "ries in my mind" Then it seems to switch into another progression/chords for 2 bars: 5. Gm7 "Yet it does't" 6. Am7 "ever last...." <----This chord I'm not sure of Then back to Dm-G to round out the 8 bars (I think....not sure of these 2). 7. Dm9 "(for) long" 8 G13/D Then repeat this 8 bar pattern for next part of Verse. Coming out of verse... "every time..." CHORUS: Gm7 "I see...." Am7 "Your eyes" (again this chord is bugging me.. maybe different bass note? Or maybe an Em7 over A??) Dm9"Touch Me" C/D "Hold Me" This is as far as I've gotten. The thing is there seem to be some passing tones or chords too... like when holding on to that Dm9..... Gotta keep working on the intro and solo.. but would appreicate any in put from y'all. I'm still kinda new at trying to do this. (BTW if you cant' tell from the above I'm doing this on keyboard). [Edited 12/10/04 18:41pm]

You might have more success if you provided a sound sample (mp3, wav).
Folks might not have this particular tune. Just a suggestion. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Folks might not have this particular tune. Just a suggestion. You mean not everyone on here has the entire Prince and Protege catalog at their fingertips?? That's a good idea. I'll have to upload it somewhere later tonight. Thanks [Edited 12/13/04 10:14am]

[Edited 12/10/04 18:41pm] The intro sounds like Dm9/G7sus4 and then BbM7/Gm7 (or the G7sus4 might work again) 6. Am7 "ever last...." <----This chord I'm not sure of
Try an A7+5 resolving to an A7 Before the 2nd verse the vamp sounds like a Dm9 to G7/9+11 (that out sounding chord). Let me know if this gets you close. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm [Edited 12/13/04 19:54pm] "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Try an A7+5 resolving to an A7 Hey man! This A7+5 is the chord I was searching for!!! (that means A7 with a sharp 5th right? Cuz that's that's i'm playing and it works! ) Except I think it just goes back into the Dm9. In the chorus I've decided it's an Am11 (not sure the exact name but it's like an Em7 played over an A) The intro sounds like Dm9/G7sus4 and then BbM7/Gm7 (or the G7sus4 might work again)
I'm not sure I understand how you're notating this with the slash(sorry). Do you mean vamp between a Dm9 and the G7sus4, and then vamp between BbM7/Gm7 or play the one chord over the other in the left hand?? Before the 2nd verse the vamp sounds like a Dm9 to G7/9+11 that out sounding chord).
Again, I'm sorry but I dont' understand this. Does G7/9+11 mean G7 sharp the 9th and add the 11th? I think I am very close now thanks to you though... esp that A7 with 5+!! I really appreicate you help.

That's exactly right. I'm not sure I understand how you're notating this with the slash(sorry). Do you mean vamp between a Dm9 and the G7sus4, and then vamp between BbM7/Gm7 or play the one chord over the other in the left hand??
Sorry for the confusion. It means vamp between Dm9 and G7sus4. Then BbM7 and Gm7. Again, I'm sorry but I dont' understand this. Does G7/9+11 mean G7 sharp the 9th and add the 11th?
Its a G7 with a 9 and a +11. I'm playing these on guitar spelled from low to high: G (root) F (7) A (9) C# (+11) Hopefully this make things a bit clearer. Now let's hope it's the right chord tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm [Edited 12/13/04 22:18pm] "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Thanks man! I"m at work now so I'm going to have to try this when I get home.
I really appreciate your help. BTW, I read your 2-part story last night .....and wow! That was so inspirational! Thanks for sharing that on here. I'm just tinkering around with my keyboard.....(I took classical lessons as a kid but always preferred this style of funk/r&b). But I did my first ever performance last month with this jazz/funk group where we had 4 rehearsals and then got to play in the Bottom Line. For me, it was like a teeny-weeny mini-version of what you described, since I'd never played in a group, let alone on a stage before. But it was fun. I had suggested we do Glamorous Life but we didnt' try it til the 3rd rehearsal and the leader decided it needed too much work to arrange so we didn't do it. Anyway, can't wait to go home now and try this . I'm actually happy I was able to get as far as I was, cuz playing by ear is kinda new to me, but now with your help I should be able to play the whole thing through .

That sounds like great fun. The Bottom Line is an historic Greenwich Village venue. (I grew up in NYC) Good luck with the tune. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."
