mini riot on NPGMC msg boards over vid price!

Most posters on Prince's "U Tell Us" message boards are in agreement that $7.77 is too much for 11 minutes of video.

Most of what Prince has done in the past year has been priced fairly, so maybe he will adjust this downward soon. It's good that NPGMC announced this video clip several days before it's release to let people react to the pricing.

We'll see if anyone's listening.

at that rate a 2 hour Musicology Tour DVD would cost $85.47

I am sure even they have their limits.

I too think the 7.77 is a bit pricey. I also think there WILL be a DVD of this concert...there's too much hype and it's sold out all over the place. It would be kinda dumb not to.

I think they are testing the waters with prices and downloads etc. Prince hears ALL THE TIME, "I'd buy anything he puts out" , "Please release more" etc etc...but at what cost? They never say.

I am glad this has gotten some of the folks over there's panties in a bunch. At least he or his minions can give him feed back.

You have a point. My guess is $5.99 would have been accepted better. That's $2 per song w/video.

I will probably buy it either way, but I'm not surprised by the furor over the price.

i wouldn't call it a "riot", come on now... lol

i think it's a weird price when compared to some of...well, MOST of...the other things offered in the musicology store. there's definitely some sticker shock going on over in NPGMC land.

you know, i wouldn't give a crap if they charged 777.77 for the video file if they'd just post an audio version of this clip for 77 cents.

I did say "mini" riot. Compared to how supportive most posts seem over there, I'd say the thread Psykosoul started is "riot" status for those boards. smile

All of these different pricing plans and methods of selling his music are all to see how much they can milk from gullible fans.

What is the problem with simply selling songs and video clips for a buck or so per track, so that the grand total of 12-15 tracks is comparable to the cost of a CD or DVD???

Greed sucks eh?

why are individual songs priced at .77 but this is priced as a full cd? i don't think 7.77 or 5.55 is too much...i mean, its the same price as a single at tower or virgin...but it doesn't seem to make sense. what's special about this that is warrants a special price?

Well the simple answer is you pay more for video and audio than you do for just audio.

I usually just read posts, but I must respond to this one. It cost only 25 dollars to join. Once you join, you never have to pay that again. Pretty good deal. Buying a video for 7 bucks, a song for 99 cents, or an album for 10 bucks isn't a bad deal either. Don't forget. NPGMC is a business, not a not-for-profit organization. How do you think they generate revenue to keep the business running and profitable? Simple. They charge what the market will bear for their product. If $7.77 is too much for the video, then the market will let them know by not buying it. Saying that the pricing is greedy or that NPGMC is trying to sucker people is not a vaild point. If we were talking necessities it would be vaild, but we are talking about entertainment which is a luxury.

no you don't, at least not by a significant amount

The very best of Prince is $13.49 on CD, the Hits collection is $13.04 on DVD
Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic is $14.99, Rave un2 the year 2000 on DVD is $16.39
There's about $1 difference in price between the purple rain soundtrack and the Purple Rain DVD

And it's not really 3 songs, the other two songs were merged into the question of U as one long song. It is great, no doubt about it. But even $5.55 is excessive when he could do so much more.

Moan moan moan, everyone is ALWAYS moaning. Why should these be FREE? This is a business and nobody is making you buy. There are all plenty of things we've said we want to see on the club* but it costs money to produce the material + hosting and bandwidth so EXPECT to pay something!

However, surely there is an easy cost structure that *might* keep everyone happy such as:

1 audio track/song = $0.99 non members and $0.77 members
1 video track/song = $1.99 non members and $1.77 members
An album = $9.99 non members and $7.77 members

Also NPGMC are giving the audio track of this live performance in addition to the video for free!

*I would like to see whole album soundboard recordings of a concert from EACH of Prince's tours along with a few special after shows. They exist and it would be great (put the bootleggers out of business too)
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

Prince doesnt "run" the site. the administrator does... now im not sitckin up for anyone, because personally its a Looney bin over there Lately. at any rate.. Prince doesnt tell them what to price it...the admin does.7.77 is 2 much for only 11 mins of Video IMHO when the gett off vid single was released it was 30 mins and about 7 bucks to buy it.

2 bucks for the video wouldnt be bad..

"come on, do you ever get a say in CD prices in HMV, virgin etc???"

Erm, kinda not the same thing - If HMV is too pricey I have other options to buy the material I want to hear. This live video clip is only available at NPGMC so they have a monopoly.

Personally, I think $7.77 for an 11 minute video is a bit much. From a business perspective, would it have made more sense to offer it as a "taster" of the full download at say $0.99 and $0.77, and then release the whole thing track by track as a $9.99 download ?

Who can say ? They probably know best. My only gripe is that

a) I would happily buy the "clip" for $0.99 as with the other songs
b) I would then happily buy the whole concert at $0.99 per track, both audio and video (so they'd make $.99 x 2 x trackvolume

It's not rocket science. I'm not rich. I pick and choose what music I buy and sometimes I would rather save my $10 to buy something from a store.

I don't think they have a clue what to charge. Does this mean that the video room is not going to be open?

In comparison to everything else, it isnt reasonable.. thats why they changed it up for members 5.55 plus audio file.. its more reasonable that way, but not for a video on your computer.. There just isnt an excuse for a price like that for an 11 min video.. on your COMPUTER. Regardless of what royalties or whatever the reason is.. he can afford it..

Ya know, for one file like that.. it really isnt just a terrible price, you just start thinking if he ever adds more.. the money adds up.. and your paying like 32 dollars for 4 melodies.. ect... it gets kindof pricey, which shouldnt really be an issue for people who are members, who already fished out 25 dollars to eliminate paying prices like that..
