If people R willing 2 pay that, good for him! lol
It's a simple market-mechanism. square
So stop whining, If U don't wanna pay then don't, 4 crying out loud! blackeye
And if U think that that price is a bargain 4 a meet & greet then Njoy and let me know what it was like... nutty

GOD FORBID if people react. If Prince and fams can't handle a response, maybe they should get out of the game...

IMO I would never pay a bunch to say hi to P- to shake his hand. I would continue to buy his music but paying to meet the dude??? fuck no. Does not mean I do not like the music. I have found over the past years that I have found many other artists that are just as cool as Prince and I like them just as much. Course some people will have to be the 'ultimate biggest fan' and go shake his hand and sit on stage, more power to them, just I go to his shows personally to see the show! But there are those who follow all the way to veganism to JW plan..so there you go!

Let me tell you about something that I experienced earlier this summer. I go to a lot of those Today Show concerts they have on Friday mornings. One I went to was Jimmy Buffett. This performer has been in the business for decades, has a cult following in huge numbers, has successful stores, an independent label, restaurants, has had #1 best sellers on The NY Times Best Seller List, not to mention many very well known songs, is rich, and constantly ranks near the top grossing tours every year. You would think he would be out of touch with the common fan, right? Wrong. While we were waiting in line to see him the next morning, Buffett came out around 8:30 the night before, walking down 48th St. with no bodyguard or anything, just a driver following him close by on the street, and met with us. He talked with fans for nearly a half hour, posed for pictures and signed autographs. Didn't charge a dime. That's class. And that's why people like him. Prince would never do something like that.

I think Prince is a slightly bigger star than Jimmy Buffet. Who would pay to meet Jimmy Buffet for God's sake?
So he gave up 1/2 hour of his time? Wow!

P does pre-shows, aftershows, parties at PP.

My main concern with this issue is that the "NPGMC family" is now divided into three distinct catagories. I thought it was about "unity" as said in the forums.

Last year we all had the same opportunities...

Thats cool!! I hear ya and I personally dig artists like that. There are some other artists that I have met that have done the same.. Meatloaf, the band Garbage, the P-Funk crew, they maybe not in the same league as Prince but the reason why I like these artists are cause they are cool to the every day joe. All I would expect from Prince is a show, you can bet I would not drop a dime to meet him or like the guys in Aerosmith who think there time is worth the $500mark.. My moneys in the bank jack!

You know, I can't stand Jimmy Buffet and I'd rather listen to water dripping off my forehead than one of his hideous albums...BUT...I would argue that Buffet has an equal, if not considerably larger, fanbase than Prince.

I think the music industry is going through some scary times right now. Prince isn't the only one doing this VIP stuff - he's just following a developing new standard that most big name acts are starting to adopt. Remember that Behind The Music w/ TLC where Left Eye broke down all the expenses of making an album and touring? When you do that kind of math, charging fans ridiculous amounts of money for the priviledge of meeting their idol starts to sound pretty damn good.

I think it's kinda sad, charging huge amounts of money just to let people hang out with you for a while - this commodification of celebrity is somewhere between idolatry and prostitution - but this kind of thing is what the music industry is breeding.

That said, when a big name artist walks around and chats with fans like Buffet did before the Today Show taping - people remember that. It's cool. Make no mistake about it.

I was going to say the same thing about Buffett's audience being larger than Prince's.

Prince charges for pre-shows, aftershows, parties at PP. He has hulking bodyguards surround him and scolds women at his concerts, ticket-buying "fans" of his, for dressing too seductively. What you think, and the reality of the situation, are two entirely different matters. Prince is a fallen star. Jimmy Buffett has had a very steady, lucrative career for 3 decades, and, unlike Prince, has had a recent, high-charting single. Instead of failed business venture after failed business venture, he has written a number of NY Times Best Sellers. Instead of changing his name to some silly little squiggle, he broadcasts all of his live shows for free over a radio station he owns that has both a web and radio wave presence, so fans around the world can hear him. He has literally legions of fans, who, while they may look silly and have the unfortunate nickname of Parrotheads, dwarf Prince's ever-diminishing fan base. He can sell out a $250 seat as easily as he can sell out a $25 seat, and he is generous enough to give a great deal of his earnings to charity. Shortly after the terrorist attacks, Buffett played a show at Madison Square Garden and gave all of the proceeds to charity. He participated in a charity concert that also included Sting, Brian Wilson, James Taylor, Don Henley, John Mellencamp, Patty Smith, Roger Waters and more to benefit the family of a single man - Billboard/Rolling Stone editor - who passed away. Is Prince giving any money to anyone but himself these days? I'm sure there are several charitable organizations in Australia who would benefit from a donation. No...he's too busy banning people from his message boards for posting thoughts in opposition to his.

You forget love 4 one another charities, and he is playing at the Hong Kong concert to raise money for SARS research. You don't go to a Mercedes Benz dealership and complain that their not driver friendly because you can't afford a CLK, you just don't go.

Hey, someone left a copy of The Watchtower under my door last weekend, and it said in there that Prince offered Larry a tic-tac (lime flavored) on behalf of L4OA. Don't hate!!!

Unless you're a public figure persuading your fanbase to perform charitable acts, which Prince was doing for a while, yet seemed to have lost interest in so doing somewhere down the line...but hey, I guess at least he did it for a while, which is commendable...

Dunno Jimmy Buffett, but he sounds like a mensch. Prince wouldn't shake your hand because he'd be too scared to catch your germs and as for getting his picture taken with you ... people PAY him for that privilege.
