Could this mean there is a link somewhere, or perhaps was at some point a link to, the Knowledge Room outside?

No, you can check by pressing tab in the outside.swf movie, all clickable spots light up one after another.

I like easter eggs though... I am always looking out for those

It could be intended for use, but abandoned later in the process...
