If you read the Billboard article it mentions the screwdriver video being prepped and prince makes mention that he's just getting a few teasers together to get the website some attention. I wouldn't expect alot more right away.

I don't understand why you'd take out a full page ad for a web site that really isn't ready yet.

Prince has a serious money fixation... "Monetizing" your product... How many serious, well-respected artists talk about that? It degrades the art. It's as if he creates to make money. It's not really that way, but when he talks like this I think people will get that impression. It's sad that Prince seems so greedy and bitter; I doubt it's going to attract many newcomers. P

That might be true, except you have a whole generation of people who think there is no reason to ever pay for music.

It costs money to make music. If nobody pays for it, there won't be any of it anymore.

That said, Prince has just put out a bunch of "free" music. So I wouldn't take what he says too far. There's a place for playing free music (radio, TV, etc) and a place for selling products that support artists.

The main problem is that he TALKS about it so much and openly. It gives the impression of a shallow person and that's not really the case. Of course he should be paid for his work, but he shouldn't make that the focus on interviews. That's my main objection. P

Per Nilsen is that really you?

I don't think there's much evidence for it, other than his casual words (which we all know he doesn't do what he says).

When you look at how he could have monetized it and how he hasn't makes me think he is isn't really like that - or if he is he doesn't really know how to do it.

I mean, has he released any (guaranteed cash) remasters? NO. He could have made a mint doing that.

Has he got a website with paying members and items for sale? NO. As above.

Has he sold any of the songs we've had since the start of this year instead of giving them away? NO

Has he released an album lately via a newspaper deal or indie record deal? NO, again.

Has he ever really tried to promote his work? NO, again greater sales through promotion therefore guaranteed cash.

I recall the 02 gigs in London where tickets were very reasonable - £31.21.

That doesn't seem to smack of money fixation to me but more the desire to reach and to gain a wider fanbase.

If he really was money fixated he would have a site selling all his unreleased work knowing that the hardcore would pay for it. Instead, by not doing so, he's allowing the bootleggers to make a killing off his back.

So i don't actuallly think he is that money fixated - he's control fixated more. I don't think it's all about money for him, especially now that he's quoting the Bible about rich men not entering heaven. I think he genuinely has a passion for music, so he's probably just posing the question, how can artists make money from it in the digital age of the freebie? A fair question.

fair enough. It doesn't come across well with people, I agree. I suppose he wants to talk about issues and that's one he happens to know about. But it never sits well with people to hear millionaires whine about money

Not down. You might want to go back to an old computer... wink

Seriously, though, it is working so don't give up.

Detroit

Nice! I'm lovin' Screwdriver. I've already been rockin' Andy's CD and diggin' that too. A new live DVD? Bring it! I have high hopes for the new album. I got a feeling it will be his best work in a long time. A tour with a stop in Detroit would be icing on the cake cool
