So over 1 million hits on Youtube for R&R love is just us on the org? So lets rephrase your assertions: just because you don't like them that does not mean everyone else has to as well.

Don't get too excited. He'll probably get bored of the site and shut it down in a few months.
Seriously, calm the fuck down.

I would, too. And if it were to receive a legal release, it would allow for more above-ground discussion of it.
If Prince were to, say, have a week-long celebration at Paisley Park where he performed at night, and held screenings during the day--this would be a cool screening to see. Here's the thing about the Montreaux footage already being 'out there'; far fewer people download and purchase bootlegs than we imagine. For somebody like Prince, the number of people who do so is probably pretty large compared to other artists, but it's still not nearly as many as you'd think. It's certainly not large enough to have a serious affect on sales if (IF) NPG releases a solid product.
For example, the RIAA certification numbers for Music Video sales are Silver - 25,000, Gold - 50,000, Platinum - 100,000. In the UK its 25,000 Gold, 50,000 - Platinum.
So in theory, if they could move 50-100,000 copies of the thing over the next couple years it would be considered very succesful, a hit even.

'm sure the xclusive Montreaux show will have xclusive footage that the bootleg doesn't have. Like backstage footage & interviews & extra features... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! I would buy a live DVD, certainly.
People are knocking a guy's decision to sell a product despite the fact that some people have already stolen it? How odd. My Legacy

Yeah, because all the other videos he's released have excelled in that area. They've all been filmed really well, too. None of them have been edited to the extreme, either. He's certainly never announced a project that has never seen the light of day.
The news of a proposed Montreaux release is cool. Exciting even. But I'm not sure of ANYTHING, and I will hold my anticipation and expectations to a minimum until it's been released and I've actually watched it.

One thing I have noticed in recent years, and I know Im going to get flamed for bagging out Prince, but what exactly is his apparent "obession" with money?
He again make reference in the Billboard interview as to how to "monetize" his latest project. When you think about his history, the high profile dispute with Warner Music, his various commercially unsuccessful side projects, (3121 Fragrance for example), his obsession with no allowing videos of him appear on Youtube, you have to ask yourself the question.
Is Prince really just as greedy as the entities he has publicly battled with in his career? Does he not like having to pay third parties to ensure a project gets released and marketed effectively? Does he really believe the world owes him for every single little thing he does?
It almost highlights that perhaps the dispute with Warner Records was essentially all about greed. Warner Records wanted more money back on their investment, Prince wanted more money, and that essentially it was two greedy entities unable to compromise.

on the one hand it looks like that, yes.
on the other hand, i've just been going through some stuff that he's allowed others to post online these last few years and it amounts to a big chunk of material.
just those 6 rehearsals from last year add up to 50 minutes of material that we got for free. yes, they were 'only' streams, but they're pretty easy to find or to capture as mp3.
then there is all the stuff andy and the doc posted along the way (stratus, come together, remix instrumental portion of xtraloveable, guitar acoustic, love is a losing game etc etc)
also all the video material from the live shows of the last few years (shockadelica, lrc, icnttpoym, empty room etc etc)
now the 3RdEyeGirl twitter (laydown xtended, chapter verse, rnr remix, bambi rehearsal) and the new official website where we've already gotten screwdriver free of charge.
contradictory as usual.
only talking about how much money he should/could get, yet at the same time handing out lots of free stuff.

I bet its not. I dont know, its just that althought I love his music, there is an element of Prince which comes across as hypocritical at times.
I could go on and on I guess, but money seems to be a big thing on his agenda. Yet.....thats said, had he allowed some stuff to remain on YouTube, had he maintained a constant official website, he probably would have made more money than he has.
Ill give you a good example. I work with teenagers at a secondary college here in Australia. The bulk of the kids i work with are around 14-16 years of age. There is a good proportion of them who have an interest in music, and the bulk of them enjoy exploring music from past decades, as opposed to the current stuff. Many of them use the internet to research artists and bands. These kids can find a wealth of material on Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, just to name a few, and I know for a fact that these kids have then gone out and bought albums and DVDs from these artists they have discovered. Yet few of them know much about the contribution Prince has made to the music world, because its far too hard to find anything on the internet. This has undoubtedly affected Prince's standing in the music world negatively rather than positively.
Another area where he comes across as hypocritical is "cover songs" He has been known to voice his disaproval at artists slipping in a version of Kiss into their live shows. Yet, next thing you know, you go to any Prince concert and you will most likely see at least 2 or 3 cover songs being given a workout by Prince and his band.

^ I agree that Prince has an unhealthy focus on money/status (in my opinion). However his control issue is greater. He could make a sh*tload of money on his old 80 tours and he didn't release them
However, he still needs to get paid some for his upkeep (livestyle) but also people, facility, clothing, pre-production. lawsuits. He is sustaining a lot of people around him. In earlier days he got an amount on beforehand and revenues afterwards.
So the question seems valid.
Observation : In the last 15 years you see announcements for lawsuits directly being followed by announcements for small tours. Maybe the wallet isn't that filled.

Well there's 3 rows of 3 screens on the site. The first 3 obviously what's already posted. Perhaps next week we get another 3, and the week after another 3. By the end of that last week it will be February the 9th. 3+3+3=9. Maybe something special on the 9th? [Edited 1/24/13 12:19pm] "That's when stars collide. I agree with both you and DFUNK that Prince could probably maximize his revenue through better management of his own assets. That being said, the medium for distribution is so unstable, I understand his caution.
As for his fixation on money, you rightly point out that he still has to maintain an operation--as scaled back as it is--Paisley Park is not cheap. Just utilities & property tax alone is a healthy chunk... as is his own maintenance.
And when he looks at the not so distant past history of artists who end up bankrupt & broke while others continue to profit off their work it is a very understandable concern on his part for control & money/security. He has said before, when asked about all the stuff he is sitting on, and he once referred to it as his retirement plan. Most artists contracts as "work for hire" received no benefits, no social security, no health insurance, no workman's comp or disability. Unless they paid into it on their own they have little or no safety net.
