LOTUSFLOW3R: Backlash Among the Loyal? As much as I love the new song, I'm genuinely concerned about the backlash if Lotusflow3r does not deliver more before the subscription has ended.
The fallout among Prince's loyal fans could be considerable. Some, if not all, of the particularly vicious comments are coming from those who haven't truly liked Prince's output for years (or just happen not to appreciate this one track). But the loyal fans who coughed up $77 seem to be losing out. Not least because some dickwad subscribers have uploaded all the musical content, sometimes even videos, to free forums or bootlegging blogspots. But any and all of these potential frustrations for Prince and Lotusflow3r,will not excuse, in many minds, the core fanbase and supporters not being looked after. Can you realistically expect to take $77 and barely update the site all year, whatever the sign-up agreement? After all, these are the people who have supported Prince through the highs and the lows; all his ventures, his various releases. Nobody otherwise would have even bothered paying $77. surely this much is obvious? How do you feel? And what do you think the response could be if the site is not updated. This post is not to stir dissent but out of a genuine concern. Funk is its own reward.

there are still many people who seem to defend the model of lotusflower,
which i find amazing. they find reasons and use mathematical wizzardry to justify the cost of the website in relation to what we actually got and in some crazy way, they actually reason that we got more than enough. i wonder tho, if those people had known exactly what would be on offer this year, would they have still signed up? i know i wouldn't have. some people even reason that prince deserves our money, even if we did not get anything substantial in return. i find that idiotic. this is a website he launched and promoted. they did not promise any real stuff, but they did -as always- allude once again to '10 hours worth of new n unreleased track, unheard by anyone yet'. and more stuff like that. i knew it wouldn't be all that much but i signed up, expecting that we would at least get something similar to the npgmc with something new on a regular basis. this website, however, didn't even offer any NEWS or simple annoucements to their subscribers. 95% of all the prince news items this last year have come from sources completely independent of the website. it even seemed like prince chose to release info through either doc F or that chick who posted some montreux clips on youtube. so even prince was acting like he didn't even have a site, about two or three months into it. i don't think there will be a severe "backlash" since i guess most of the people who are members now are just like me, we want new product. if he'll put a new cd or a new dvd on his site or if he starts to put 3 or 4 new songs on the site every month, i *WILL* sign up once more. what i won't do anymore is give him my money and just wait and see if he choses to acknowledge the fact that he has a website and that he's got people waiting for something. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

another slap in the face this year is that he released 2 one off
songs "large room with no light" and "purple and gold" to other sources than his own subscription site. they could have at least had the sense to put those songs on the official site, even if they were 'exclusive' to the other sites for a little while. it's surprising that he's put up "cause and effect" now. but it's also telling. it's about saving face i guess or about trying to get people to keep hoping for more, since, you know, it's about time to get people to sign up for year 2. the only possible way for him to redeem himself of this shambles is to not charge people any more money for the second year. just turn the subscription into an indefinite membership and if you release new music, simply put it in a 'store' section and sell it. is that so hard? i have no use for streaming music, i want music on my harddrive and the option to burn it to a cd so i can listen to it in my car. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

IstenSzek is not complaining!! he is merely expressing his and alot of our reality. Some people choose to speak on it and others choose to stay quiet! I agree the complaining does get played out here, but if Prince did right by his fans there would be no anger towards him. Have any of you all payed attention to the dis songs Prince has written over the years or we just deaf!! Pearls before the Swine,No more candy 4 u,Feel better feel good, the crying baby at the end of expection, not to mention the album title was changed from xenophobia to expectation after the npgmc scandel!! I am tired like so many faithful fans to be put through this....(How ther me Question Prince's business tactics)Lol!! I made 40yrs old this weekend and music is a very important part of my life. Prince has made a imprint on my music taste. I just wish he understood and respected that like when we respected him when he decided to go back into slavery with the JW's. Im not trying to be disrespectful but damn...Just be Free again!! No Hancuffs!! I love and believe in the Creator(GOD) also, but i don't judge my peers for not having a mutual understanding. Lock the doors, invite Eric leeds and Wendy, lisa,Michael Bland and Sonny and press record!!!!! Peace LOve ya'll including u 0+>..... A Close mouth, Don't get fed!

I agree with both your posts. I do agree that we should have info before Funkenberry etc, otherwise theres not much point to the site, theres like a million more vids he can put up, and it won't hurt him to put a live concert on there as he's a bit shy about putting them on DVD these days.

The site is a disappointment, period.
For one thing it's hardly what we were hinted about one year ago (10 albums of unreleased material, full previously unreleased live concerts in video including a Purple Rain era one... where are these?). Prince doesn't "owe" his fans anything, but here we're talking about a commercial offer with promises done by an official representative in interviews and a failure to deliver what was promised. Also, compare it 2 the 10 cd's worth of material we had in 2001 for 100 bucks & it's obviously unsatifiyng. Now that's one thing and it's no reason 2 suddenly "reject" Prince as a whole, we're grown up people, able ta admit that one thing is uncool with somebody, while remembering every other reason we have to respect the man. Yes, I'm a 'so-called fan' who paid $77. Who has bought every album, single, whatever, Prince has released in the past twenty years. I'm a 'so-called fan' who attends multiple concerts when Prince is in my area. I'm a 'so-called fan' who was an NPGMC member both years and was very satisfied. I'm a 'so-called fan' who loves Prince. In fact, this is this 'so-called fans' first complaint. Being a fan does not mean one has to be a sychopant. Nor does it mean that observing or judging a situation from one's own perspective indicates one is not a 'real' fan. Of course, we love Prince's music. That's why we are here and joined to the bloody site. Remember, that criticism CAN be constructive, if it is conveyed as such. All the replies here seem pretty constructive and reasonable to me. I loved the NPGMC. Was very satisfied with that both years. I felt it really delivered. I will not reject Prince because he is my all-time favourite Artist. But I do think he perhaps needs to look a little closer at this. Funk is its own reward.

I'll sign-up for guaranteed content or pre-paid downloads. I do wonder if the numbers signing up were inconsequential. So much so, that Prince became tired of it very quickly. Perhaps it didn't seem to him to be viable enough to get his music to his audience. Releasing material on radio stations, youtube and news on Dr Funkenberry seems to indicate this. Whatever, we may well get tracks slagging us off again or babies crying at the end of cheekily titled albums ('Expectations', 'C-Note'). Suggestions that 'genuine fans' would never criticize anything. With NPGMC year two (with the resultant 'C-Note', 'Expectations), I actually thought Prince's reaction was justified. It seemed to me the NPGMC, although sometimes a little disorganised, had delivered. Maybe I was being a little 'blue-eyed' but I felt my support actually mattered; was appreciated and meant something. Now I feel like dirt on a purple shoe, waiting for purple scraps from Prince's purple table. Still love the guy though. Guess he knows that. Therein lies the problem. Funk is its own reward.

This post is not to stir dissent but out of a genuine concern. Well, the Lotusflow3r site is not any good. Not from a web design perspective, and not for a music delivery/news perspective either. It's not a web 2.0 site. At the very least, Prince should have an official Twitter account to update his fans on news, concerts, music. He'd have 100,000 followers easy. Yeah I know it wouldn't be Prince writing on his own account, but as a message delivery service, Twitter works great to get the word out about a lot of things. As far as his Lotus site, it should be redesigned to offer a lot of free stuff -- message boards, video streaming, comments, news straight from the park. But for a small monthly fee... say $5-$10, the user is allowed to access premium message boards (bootleg discussions...) and given a discount on any tickets or items sold. That way there wouldn't be so much pressure to release music so a user could get their "$77" worth. Just make it a monthly fee, which would go direct to Prince to help fund new music, given to his charity, etc. Prince could do a lot more without giving a lot more, but a site with the design of Lotus would never be able to accomplish that.
