No disrespect, but who listens to the radio anymore? Much of the younger and older crowd, listen to music on their mp3 players, cell phones, itunes, music stations on cable, on internet stations these days. The only time I listen to the radio is when I'm in a car or if I'm in a store shopping and they have music playing there. There always seem to be a Prince song though playing on the radio when I go into quite a few stores though.

I don't know the last time I turned on a radio station in my home. Can't even remember. I turn on my computer at home, and play music from there.I want to hear from there
[Edited 1/5/09 12:21pm]

Good point, radio is such an irrelevant thing, nowadays YouTube & MySpace are a lot more important and that's where people find the new music.

True, there's also internet radio. Usually, when I'm not listening to music on my mp3 player, when I'm at home, I like the music choice stations on cable, because you have a choice of which genre you want to listen to. Sometimes I like listening to Classic R&B, latin music or smooth jazz..

But yeah, I do listen to music from youtube and myspace when I can. Also from Windows media player from my playlist or Itunes on my computer as well. I'm not going to lie though, I still like my cds every now and then, but they are mostly downloaded on my computer, but I keep them as a backup in case my computer crashes or I lose my mp3 player.

If I went by what all the critics said about some of the other music I like including Prince, I wouldn't have much of a collection. In other words, fuck the critics. They don't buy my music. That's the "reality"

Pretty much my take

And I hate when people say all or most... as if they're some sort of appointed representative of the masses.

Funny thing is, Prince's last 3 albums received relatively positive reviews from most of the major music critic sources. I think the 3 albums all averaged between 3 & 4 stars out of the customery 5.

So your point is what exactly?

You’re right, not glowing reviews but mostly not trashing him either.
all his 80's albums would rate at 4 & 5 star
Which is basically what I’m saying, his music now is just basically mediocre.
It's ok to gush, I’m not saying anything about that, it’s cute.
My opinion is that his new music is mediocre and so is the artwork to his new website. Some of you soil your panties and take it as a person insult.

From MetaCritic which averages reviews based on 0-100

Planet Earth- 65

3121- 69

I was around then...the 80's, and I can tell U that this was not the case at the time of release.

'Controversy' got compared unfavourably to 'Dirty Mind' and at best was given the 3 out of 5. 'Around the World in a Day' was given very poor reviews and Prince suffered in terms of sales, I remember all the bad press this one got vividly. 'Parade' was another that got a rough ride no way near a 4 or 5 star according to the critic's, infact some dismissed it as egotism gone mad. 'Lovesexy' was in some quarters considered to dense to cluttered to layered, in short a muddle, I believe this album was considered a flop. 'Batman' was butchered to by many, certainly never achieved 4 or 5 star status atthe time.

However I would just like to add that since then, some years later, some of the above were 'reconsidered' by the 'critics' (most now live here in the org.) and were looked upon generally in a better light, especially 'Parade' and 'Around the World in a Day'.

So your point is what exactly?

I was around then too, and thats when i became a fan also.
Lets fast forward, what are those albums rated as now? yes 4 & 5 stars

Now lets fast forward to the reviews of his last 4 releases and you'll see they have been downgraded from their initial 3 & 4 star reviews, and in the coming years they will continue to be down graded.
Prince usually gets a passing grade nowadays based on his legacy more than anything else. Which he certainly deserves.

No not really because my argument has always been about my own personal opinion, but yes your right i used critic and record buyers as back-up lol.
But my own personal opinion still backs what is generally accepted as Princes best, and opinion is all it is.

While looking for reviews, yes i must admit you are certainlly correct about what critics initially thought.

I'm with you on this. I have followed and supported Prince since the early 80s. For me, the packaging and art direction of a Prince record was just as fresh and interesting as his music and live show. I was continuously excited and inspired by cover work and inserts -- from the news print of CONTROVERSY to the collage of 1999, the band pics and autographs in PARADE and the stage set on SOTT. Even the hologram on D&P was innovative. Its not "hating" to encourage a design-forward look to his website and future endeavors.

Cool new site! Like the design smile And I'm glad to see my main man back on the scene.

However, hmm while the Tommy James and Shondells cover is rockin' and groovy, I'm really not feeling the other 2 tracks that much. Well, maybe "There Will Never Be.." has got some of that old school purple funk. But it sounds like he's just trying to get back on the radio again. And for someone who says he stays away from the radio, he's really formatted his other 2 songs into sounding like one of those damn Urban/Hip-Hop jigaboos. I'm sorry, but them damn new rappers like T-Pain and Lil' Wayne are like modern day minstrel shows to me. And that Crunk/Snap shit is tired. At least I'm tired of it.

Back to the point: Prince really should stop trying to follow what's on the charts and follow his heart. Just do something different, for crying out loud. Something completely and totally original and away from the numbers. I guess it must because I was listening to P's demo version of "Chocolate" today and it was just too funky! Seriously. I still respect the brother, but whatever he's doing now won't measure up to that stankyness.

I really hate to say this about my hero because I've been trying to defend him here in orgland all these years. I just hope the rest of the new tunes offer something different.
NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.
