Considering how well this musical slop matches up with Prince's recent output, I'd not be surprised if this is the return to form John Blackwell was speaking of the other day. I see why Prince is nothing but a live oldies act: it's all he has. This new music is devoid of excitment, experiment, challenging ideas or even good grooves. He can still play guitar, that's never been in doubt, but what a load of disposable crap. And the other thread where everyone was so sure this wasn't Prince is definitely a keeper. Face it, this music, the lyrics and production are stale. I bet this was the supposed return to Controversy. Give me a break. [Edited 12/18/08 20:59pm] No hard feelings.

I installed Firefox into my computer and now as I type, I'm listening to the song and I like it. It's funky but truth be told, I like the 4 songs from earlier today more than this but it's still a very good song. I really like what's happening at the end of the song with the instruments. All and all, I'm satisfied and all is GREAT with the world tonight!
One more thing, to all of you who thought that the music on mplsound was a fake, NA NA NA NA NAAAAA! The joke is on you!!!!! I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I couldn't agree with you more. Wall should've been gone, trying to continually be a killjoy. Too many of them around here as it is. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Okay..
So I agree to some extent. This is a far cry from Controversy. However, it IS funky and at least mildly enjoyable. The man is 50 years old.. I'm just thrilled he's still MAKING music in the first place. Wall said: As I already said when this site was posted and previewed:

Not true. I thought the FUNK track was respectable enough and there's been a song or two on the past few albums that are at least listenable. Rainbow Children showed developmental promise even amidst the moronic religious ramblings but he seems to have regressed into making, quite simply, bad pop music. The lyrics are either preaching or pandering to a younger audience and when he does the latter, he sounds as out of touch as any 50 year old would. Prince has never really matured and his lyrics are a prime example of that. If this song is your cup of tea then I imagine I'd not enjoy your record collection but if it's what you deem to be good music, then more power to you. No hard feelings.

Ouchy... that one hurt.... the other 4 are wayyyyy better! The lead line form this one is from the ending of Annastacia... & the ending is pretty cool. Synth line change! Synth line change! Too many plain choruses at the end... sounds like "the good life". But again, the other four are HOT!!!!

And by the way, I believe Prince mispelled his URL. "mplsound" The abbreviation for Minneapolis is MPLS. So is he saying mpls ound? Or mpl sound? I think he's missing an additional "s" in there. It should be www.mplssound.com A small issue, but to go and register a whole domain you might want to proofread first! [Edited 12/18/08 20:55pm] Firefox is a web browser and about 100 times more secure than IE. Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

Love it. All this new Prince music just makes it a great day in musical history.
I also think 12/18 is the day we just experienced Prince's new distribution method. Maybe this is Prince's shout out to the Time with their new project?? The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

It is a juicy little track, and it seems like it was created in the same period of time as Brand New Orleans, but also has vocal traces from Acknowledgement (the patter in the chorus seems similar). Go figure him to stir the hornet's nest up like he did, only to turn around and go independent again (IMO, some of the strongest music he made in his career came from the 01-03 period).
However, what's with the "we both dimes, all the other pennies should scatter" lyric? Also, what's up with the vocal gimmick he's usin'?

Okay, so on these songs, if we start to hear these tracks leaked on youtube or other places, I think Prince would be totally justified to for cease and desist.

It's okay, but not exactly groundbreaking.
The other four (maybe not "4ever") sound like they were recorded live in one take a la "The Undertaker"... intriguing though 'dre Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

This falls short of the 4 we heard today BY FAR! Its dated and uninspired. However I am loving all this new music to listen to.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Now that we know it's Prince for certain, is it more likely that this is a one-off track or that it will be on the new album? Personally, I can't imagine this song on the same CD as the other four -- and, in fact, I hope it isn't.

poisonmouth said: Can anyone make out that line about Rick James?
He said he'd be "like Don Cornelius and Rick James...." Prince was talking about defending himself in a club against folk who might start a scene, and Don and Rick both got jail time for beating people up (albeit in the way different contexts of domestic violence and kidnapping and beating up a woman, respectively.)
