Why Does He Charge For One Song?

When i went to check out Guitar i was disappointed, but not suprised that it costs money!
On the same day my favourite band Silverchair released their new song online, and unlike P its FREE!!!! And they even have the film clip...for FREE!!!
Has P really sold us out? I mean come on is a band that is half as big as Prince is can put their songs online for nothing why cant P? Im sure he has more than enough money!
I would love 2 pay for his music and all, but not having a credit card can b a disadvantage for when u wanna hear his music, but only puts it online!

Some folks give stuff away to encourage you to purchase something else they have to sell. Prince doesn't really have anything else new for sale right now so he's offering this for you to purchase. Nothing odd really. I haven't bought anything new from him for some time so 2 bucks for 'the cause' is no big deal and I gladly do it. Not sure if I would say anyone has enough money. I'm sure there are people that could look at anyone of us and say, 'hey they have more than enough money, how come they aren't doing this...' Definitely stinks not having a card to make the purchase but I'm sure you're clever enough to get a copy without a card. Specially since a number of people actually paid for more than 1 download. smile

IMO, the fact that he puts it online or charges for it is not the problem. The problem is that he doesn't just list them on iTunes. It would save himself and his fans a hell of a lot of trouble most of the time.

no chance would i like 2 c prince on iTunes, i mean one of the conditions of downloading stuff from there is that u CANNOT put it on cds, which is majorly bogus and most likely one of the reasons P doesnt?

You are completely incorrect.

You are perfectly capable of burning music to CD via iTunes whether it is your own or purchased from the iTunes Store. The feature is built right in... and plainly advertised. It will even create MP3 CDs for you.

Less than a dollar would get you the Prince track, unlimited CD burning, and printing of the cover art all inside the app.

"Burn the music you buy to an unlimited number of CDs for your personal use, listen to it on an unlimited number of iPods, and play it on up to 5 authorized computers."

Are you for real?

Would you work a days shift for nothing? Somehow I doubt it. He worked to make it, so I've no problem paying him for it, because I'd expect the same if I had toiled to create something. Sure, he can give stuff away for free, and has done so in the past but I think it's important peeps remember one important fact:

Nobody is forcing you to buy it. shrug

Sheesh -- have you ever walked into a music store and seen the "free singles section" where they just let you grab whatever song you want on CD and walk out, on your merry way?

Ever stopped by the gas station to find that they're giving away a gallon of gas for free just because you have a car, have been driving for years, and seem like a nice person? The oil companies have plenty of money so that only makes sense.

Recall rolling into a corner store to find that medium size Slushies are a free-for-all?

Remember darting into that phone booth downtown to discover that 5 minutes of local or long distance calling is on the house? I mean, all those phone lines and satellites are already set up, in orbit -- it's pretty much free anyway.

And how cool is it that McDonald's 99 cent menu is now the Free Menu -- just pick what you want and they'll hand it over with a smile. You've eaten there plenty before, right? So it only seems fair. And Ronald ain't hurtin'.

I guess after you've worked in your career for 30 years you'll decide to continue doing your job for free because people have been paying you for decades?

I'm happy that guitar came in dmr free mp3...and in better quality that the aac files that iTunes sells. Guess Prince learned the lesson from the entire drm fiasco of the npgmc

Actually, the 128 kbps aac files sold in the iTunes store are fairly close in sound quality to the 192 kbps mp3 file like "Guitar." In my mind, what you get for $1.99 with "Guitar" is a drm-free music file as opposed to paying half as much at iTunes for a file that restricts your usage.

Wasn't it advertised as free? It wasn't up for me at ALL on the day it was supposed to be and then the next day it cost two bucks.

It was never advertised as being a free download and was made available in the evening of the advertised day (central time in the U.S.). It didn't say it would be available at 12:01 a.m. on the advertised day.

Come on guys -- we got a free 13 minute concert in high definition during the Super Bowl and we're going to complain about a new song being offered as a $1.99 single? Does no one around here remember when cassingles cost $4 plus tax and fell apart after eight listenings? And now a $2 download is not acceptable?

It never said "free". But it could have been construed by some as free, because it didn't say "for purchase" or give any indication that they were charging per download.

Never-the-less, you can get it free now, since it is non DRM.

Oh, by the way, DRM is dead. It's on it's way out for Apple and Microsoft as we speak.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I must be going crazy...I'm positive it said Free because I checked it many times and my friends looked at the site with me and it said free to them too.

maybe my internet is completely insane?

I suppose you could infer that it would be offered for free because it didn't specifically state that it would be a pay-per-download, but again, I would just ask those who were put off by having to pay for it to look at it again with a degree of common sense.

Yes, it didn't say "buy it tomorrow" or anything like that, but how often do you see ads that specifically say "requires payment for product or service advertised"? I mean, a can of Pepsi costs less than half of this music download and yet I've never seen a Pepsi ad that stated "Cans will not be dispensed from retail outlets or vending machines for free. Payment will be required prior to consumption."
