Soundscan / Billboard figures - Musicology Week 22

Prince climbs from #13 to #12 in week 22 on the charts. Total now sits at around 1,868,000. This will be the end of the line for the lofty chart position Prince has enjoyed these many weeks as all shows have now been accounted for. Its been a great ride.

Just to get a feel for the type of drop to expect next week heres the number of units and its chart position this week.

#69 15,000
#77 13,300
#90 12,200
#105 10,200
#115 9,000
#119 8,500
#129 7,700
#166 6,200
#200 5,100

I'm totally guessing at this, but I figure he is selling 7-10,000 a week at retail lately which would put him in the #100- #130 range. I hope he doesnt get too much press for having an album that drops 100 positions in one week. Wonder if that would be a record? confused

I really hope it doesn't fall too far down the charts but what can we do if it does? It's been a great ride and I'm just glad to see that Prince surprised us all with these numbers. I hope that the next single puts the album over the 2 Million mark.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I thought Nine Inch Nails had some sort of record with The Fragile falling off from the number 1 spot to who knows how far?

The week in 1991 when they switched to SoundScan was very chaotic...I don't remember any specific albums having a huge freefall, but the net effect was that "record store" albums (i.e. alternative, college-type stuff -- I do remember Fishbone took it pretty hard) took a big dive, and country and hardcore rap surged to the top for the first time, mainly because Wal-Mart and the mass audience were finally counted properly (or at least moreso).

Anyway, Prince got a much longer chart run than he ever could have otherwise (without a big radio hit). I guess that's the end of the 2004 comeback, but what a year it was.

Sony has got this under control, their planning a huge campaign for the Musicology cd coming this fall... with a new PRINCE video and single to add at Pop and Adult CHR radio.

Sony just waited until the end of the Musicology Tour (USA) to start their own promotional trip for the latest record by PRINCE.

This info came from a very reliable source.
Expect Prince to perform a few Television spots and not to mention that concert DVD!
Right now, Sony has a commercial for the Cd, which features the video 'Musicology and Call My Name'...plus a special offer when calling the 1800 #.
So Let the Marketing begin!

My guess is that it will take anywhere from 4-8 weeks after this week, but Musicology will eventually go double-platinum. And with there being follow-up legs in Europe, Australia, and possibly Japan, it'll eastily jump up to about 4 million copies worldwide.

The thing that Prince needs to do to ensure the double-platinum issue is to release another single from the album. I know there have been three singles, but What Do U Want Me 2 Do? or Life Of the Party could do well to boost sales. Either one of those singes (particularly the former) will work.

Congratulations, Mr. Prince! As they said on the Good Question album liner notes, "Next time, send chocolates!" (Who remembers this album?)

I just had a thought about the controversy of including discs in the price of the ticket.

People were saying that it wasn't an accurate or fair way to count. Well, if a person was at a wrecka stow and they bought two copies, say one for themself, and another for a friend, would we say one word then?

SoundScan counts units moved, NOT PEOPLE SOLD TO!

Also, I would desperately like to know how people can get access to information from SoundScan figures from week to week. Anyone got any ideas?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say exactly. What's not fair is that it's not really an album sale. The "controversy," as you put it, was more about the idea that there was no choice involved in the "units moved." If I go to the wrecka stow and buy two copies, I did it by choice. If I then decide to attend a Prince concert that same evening, with my friend in tow, we now have four copies between us. Arguably, there is a choice involved by choosing to attend the concert, knowing that the album is included in the ticket price, but really if it were fair, the rule wouldn't have been changed so quickly thereafter.

I don't think that really matters - if it was passed out, then it counts. If you get an album for Christmas from someone else, is it really your choice what your friends get you for Christmas? No. While you have a choice or keeping or returning it, this doesn't change the fact that you received a disc, because you can't change the past.

If what you're saying is right and I have no reason to doubt you, then it's going to be really crazy and I for one can't wait. But as always with Prince, I have to see it to believe it.

it seems like new singles dont have as much affect on album sales these days as tv appearences..for it to top 2 million he needs to do Jay Leno or something..but i wouldnt worry the nominations at the American Music Awards will help also when grammy time comes around it shouldnt have no trouble topping 2 million..especially if he plays at the awards shows smile

I don't know many ppl who buy singles. I hardly ever buy them myself.

The visual medium is a HUGE way of promoting music, and even more so now then ever b4 in the past. I believe that it's the videos that are able to keep P in the spotlight (and the live appearances etc)

Thinkin' optimistically(sp?) here..... but who says that this has to end all we gotta do is have faith in ppl to know good music when they hear it. I kno that may be an understatement of prince's talents to some people(including me) but that is how none purple hippes view him.
