Prince Rocked L.A....again. (5/26)

Yesterday was my wife's birthday.
I bought tickets to last night's Prince concert at Staples as one of her presents.
We were on the floor Sec 8, Row 5, Seats 7&8.
Prince rocked the house.
I just got home and i'm exhausted. I can't talk.
I feel like I just went 12 rounds with Mike Tyson.
But...I still have to give her one more present.

Good night,
tA

May 26th Staples Center LA was literally one of the BEST concerts I have ever been to - or will likely see the likes of again. My seats were decent - not amazing - but it didn't matter because I was with my friends singing and dancing and it was an incredible ride! Prince is one of the most incredible performers out there - his talent is immense and the audience responded with pure joy!

WHo gonna give us a setlist? I mean we know it is gonna be basically the same show but there are usually one or two surprises like The Ride or Whole Lotta Love being thrown in on some nights.

The setlist was very similar to the opening night show. He opened with the induction ceremony (which is getting a bit tiresome to hear Alicia Keys blab on and on... she was stoned giving that speech, right?)... Anyway, the setlist, as best as I can remember, is as follows...

Musicology
Let's Go Crazy
I Would Die 4 U
Baby I'm A Star
When Doves Cry
Shhh
DMSR
Controversy
God
Little Red Corvette
Cream
I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
Raspberry Beret
Adore
Seven
The Question Of U/The One/Fallin'
Let's Work
A Love Bizarre
U Got The Look
Life Of The Party
Soul Man
Kiss
Take Me With U

The Beautiful Ones
Nothin' Compares 2 U
Purple Rain

I could be missing a couple, and the order is probably messed up. I don't go to see a Prince concert with pen and paper. The show was great. Maceo is back. John Blackwell is simply the best drummer that ever lived. The band was tight. The cheering waiting for the encore was surprisingly loud and steady. My seats were AWESOME (second row!!!) which is a huge step up from opening night (I wasn't even on the floor!!! Was that show full of corporate lackeys or what?)

I only have two complaints (if you can call them that):

1) Prince wanted the audience to sing the chorus to Cream, but he fed us the lines as he went. Is this who is going to see his shows now? People who don't know the chorus of Cream?!? Come on!!!

2) I miss those aftershows! The band was able to let loose on DMSR, Controversy and Let's Work, but it just got me jones-ing for some late night jamming! Hopefully, they'll be one in Vegas!!!

That's it. Much love to the Master!

First off, Prince was red hot! He seemed more relaxed & playful this time around (I had the privilege of being at the kick-off Staples show). The part where Prince lays down like he's going to sleep was funny. I thought the crowd was also more engaged this time around. To me, the crowd seemed a bit subdued at the first Staples show (of course, I am not speaking of people with floor sets).

Two other observations:

1.) In the first Staples show, he did the acoustic set as part of the encore. Now the acoustic set comes in around the middle of the show. I think the "flow" of the show works better with the acoustic set as the encore. It just felt a little odd. Prior to the acoustic set, Prince has all this energy going on - then he disappears for 10 minutes. It seemed like half of the crowd thought "intermission," and walked out during this period.

2.)

Sign O The Times
The Question Of U/The One/ Fallin'
Let's Work

Am I the only one who thought that the show sort of fell into a lull during this period? It just felt a little long during this portion.

P.S. In the way of celebrity sightings, I saw both Elijah Wood and Trent Reznor ... not together I should add.

SOOOOO, he STILL hasn't worked Call My Name into this mutha??? whofarted fight I'm glad he fit Adore in & lost Insatiable (GOOD MOVE!) but damn man, I wanna hear that!! sigh

Is ICNTTPOYM new on the setlist? I don't remember him singing it @ the simulcast - did he add it to dates that followed that? hmm

First off, thanks to Hoo for filling in the blanks. Although I wouldn't say he exactly "played" Jailhouse rock or Sweet Thing. Sweet Thing was hinted to at best, and Jailhouse Rock was his idea of a joke. In fact, he played more of A Love Bizarre than you give credit.

Second, since I was also at the Staples Show in March, I have to agree with Suedehead. The acoustic set works better right before the encore. He had all this energy going with DMSR and Controversy... the acoustic set kind of messes up that flow...

Third, don't dismiss March's crowd too quickly. That standing ovation during the acoustic Little Red Corvette was completely spontaneous and beautiful. The love emanating from that room really was overwhelming, even for Prince. In fact, it was one the highlights of that seeing Prince live. It's something I will remember forever, and I was glad to be a part of it.

Finally, who exactly had floor seats during that March Staples show? I was surrounded by other NPG Music Club members, and we weren't even close!

I'm going tomorrow and over the weekend. Is the seating still random, or is there any benefit to arriving hours early to pick up tickets?

He's played Jailhouse Rock during the Act2 Aftershows several times in the past.

Me too. There was nothing that equalled the standing ovation during the first Staples show. I was ready for it biggrin ... that was truly a spontaneous moment.

One thing they did at this show which really "hyped" the crowd, was playing Prince music before the show started. I've never been to a show where they play an artist's music prior to their taking the stage. In this case, it really worked well.

Last thought on this. I'm still surprised Prince hasn't worked in more songs from the new album. "Call My Name," and "A Million Days" would be excellent in the set list. Any ideas why he wouldn't do this? Especially now that the album is out.

A few points now that my mind is semi-clear and my wife's b'day obligations have been handled. whistling

The show started late due to (according to the Staples gate guardians) an "extended sound-check". I thought to myself "Aha, that's because The Time are gonna open the show.". This delusion was continued when they suddenly played "Cool" amidst all the pre-show Prince music they were playing on the "small system". If i'm remembering this right, reality set in when they played "Call My Name" on the "big system" directly prior to Prince coming onstage.

A few folks have asked how they should dress. My wife and I went decked. Me in a black double-breasted black suit (complete with black&white pocket hanky), off white gator patterned silk shirt and tasseled Stacy Adams kicks. The little woman in a stylish red suit. We were so over-dressed compared to others in line that one of the attendants walked directly over to us and said "You know that the entrance for V.I.P. ticket holders is over there". We had a good laugh over that. Anyway, by the time the band hit DMSR I wanted to say "Y'all gonna make me sweat this suit out". The moral of the story, and how I will be dressed for the 6/5 show, is casual clothes and comfortable shoes.

Regarding the acoustic section coming mid-show, hey, I NEEDED the rest. It was dance party central up to that point.

Speaking of dance party, I have no idea where they got last night's "dancing girls" from. Prince was on our cat walk when he asked the same girl to sing on Kiss and Take Me With U. She blew it both times. doh!

I was pissed that he didn't let any guys dance. hmph!
If I say so myself, I can work it. dancing jig

All in all a helluva show. thumbs up!
Can't wait for the next one.

Unbelievably Fabulous!!!!! I got lucky and sat 2nd row same in OC on Monday night but this show was longer and better!!!! OC got a rock show and LA got the soul flavor. Hard to explain but it's my opinion. he played Zepellins whole lotta love and shorter versions of songs for the crowd in OC and theone/adore/questionofU,NothingCompares,The Couch, etc etc so many soul drenched tunes etc etc in LA for a much different crowd... LA peeps and OC peeps are like avocodos and mangos literally! he seemed to be enjoying himself more in LA considering he played an extra hour and 15 minutes!
To Sir, with Love

Thanks for understanding and getting it.
That night was one of those "...times that try men's souls" or maybe more accurately stamina.
It may even make you look at those Enzyte/Viagra/Levitra adds with less of a jaundiced eye.

For those going tonight, it's a concert that you might have to train for because you will get worked. dancing jig
