Chasez rocks Fillmore Prince-style

James Sullivan, Chronicle Pop Culture Critic Tuesday, May 18, 2004

All those magazine covers tell the story: Prince is back, in a major way.

In fact, there are two Prince tours on the road at the moment. One is the self-congratulatory stadium show by the rejuvenated '80s superstar himself.

The other is a virtual Prince revue by 'N Sync's JC Chasez. Right now, he might have the better of the two shows.

Chasez's solo debut may be called "Schizophrenic," but the singer is single-minded in his devotion to his purple prototype. Midway through a feverish 80-minute set at the Fillmore Sunday, Chasez and his superb band played a slavish version of Prince's "Let's Go Crazy," right down to the Artist's own recording of the familiar "Dearly beloved" intro. Meanwhile, "100 Ways," the night's final encore, was a Chasez original that sounded more like Prince than Prince's own new music does.

Prince's breakthrough album was "Dirty Mind," and Chasez -- another former Mouseketeer, just like Justin and Britney and Christina -- clearly shares his hero's runaway libido. Showcasing a six-pack of dancers, four long- legged women and two pop-locking homeboys, Chasez's show was stuffed with innuendo.

These 'N Sync boys have either grown up in a hurry, or their Radio Disney act was a well-tended front. Right after Justin Timberlake's infamous Super Bowl halftime incident with Janet Jackson, the NFL revoked Chasez's invitation to perform at the Pro Bowl.

Though he had some choice words for his backpedaling hosts, some of the moves he and his dancers made on Sunday would have made Ms. Jackson turn crimson.

During "Some Girls (Dance With Women)," the vaguely dance hall-ish (but unequivocally suggestive) number that Chasez was to have performed for the NFL, the singer spun away from the audience, mirrored by a girl on each hip. The strategically placed finger-wagging that came next was, however fleeting, about as hot as pop choreography can get before it becomes straight-up porn.

"All Day Long I Dream About Sex," Chasez chanted on an eight-minute version of his current signature song, opening the show with a heavy dose of nostalgia for the darker side of new wave. His band wore hospital scrubs, emphasizing the tour's health-and-wellness theme. (On the album cover, Chasez is tied up in a straitjacket.)

"If rock had a second home, it would be here at the Fillmore," the singer gushed, joining the long line of performers who inevitably express their gratitude at headlining the storied hall for the first time. The funny thing was, this butt of a thousand and one boy-band jokes rocked convincingly hard, with a lot of help from the ringers in his funk-metal band.

Howling like Michael Jackson and head-banging in sync with his two guitarists, he poured sweat, draping a soaked towel over one shoulder. For "One Night Stand," a song that borrowed whole-cloth from Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" and Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'," Chasez emerged in a black hat with a huge red feather and a fur-collared pimp's overcoat.

Judging by the screams of the women in the sold-out auditorium -- yes, full-grown women, not impressionable little schoolgirls -- Chasez knows exactly how to get the most out of his harem. His music may be derivative, but it's clearly working for him.

That first single by JC is awesome. It's playing in my head over and over.

He's no Prince, but my friend put me on to his album and i have to say it's very good, some great pop tunes. Reviews of his album have been incredibly harsh, shame really he deserves more attention as a solo artist. Listening to the album apart from 100 ways it's not that prince influenced really.

Why is everybody getting compared to Prince these days? If only it was someone worthy of the comparison for once.

Maybe i'm getting old, but i don't see it. confused

There are a couple of reasons for the comparisons lately. Everyone knew over the years that Prince was destined to become a legend. But his recent induction into the Hall of Fame has made it "official". The powers that be in the record industry have to capitalize on the Hall of Fame stardom in order to add more credibility to being inducted into the Hall of Fame in the first place. Whereas other artists have long since faded away, Prince is one of the rare few who has been around long enough to be inducted (25 years) and at the same time young enough to be treated almost as a brand new artist who can be turned on to a much younger audience.

Make no mistake about it, as much as I love Prince's art it is not just a coincidence that he is now basking in the commercial spotlight after all these years. But regardless, Prince has worked his ass off for years and he deserves to be treated with this kind of respect for a change. So I expect the comparisons to continue regardless of the level of talent of the comparee.

while i don't doubt JC is ok for what he does, this comparison to Prince and saying his show might be the better of the two is delusional. We know that right now with MJ and his craziness, critics are searching for someone to compare these new jacks to but Prince is a little out of reach, even accomplished musicians admit they could never duplicate his genius. If JC admires Prince, and borrows from him I think that's fine because he himself must know he could never be Prince. It's the critics I have a problem with they are going to make Prince start to seem like a joke with these comparisons!

JC's album is very good. It's not as good as Prince, but if anyone deserves to be compared to his Royal Badness, it's JC. His album is diverse, lyrically complex, and just slammin'! He made an album that is about the music, not about being the flavor of the moment by following the popular formula of hip-hop infusion that is soo annoyingly present in most of the music out now. In the beginning it was cool, but when I start hearing Yin Yang twins on a Britney Spears song, it's time for it to die. JC deserves his props, just for not following Justin Timberfake's lead. That is all. Remain in cool mode until I return. cool

Have you heard "If You Were My Girl" from JC's album? Sounds a lot like a Lenny Kravitz song.

Yeah, this album is my guilty pleasure as of late. Also on the must hear list is the Chasez song "Plug It In" off Basement Jaxx's album "Kish Kash". I used to make fun of my 30-some year old sister having a crush on the guy (this was back in the N*Sync days), but now... I'm so on board.

You can stop laughing at me any time now.
