Teena Marie and MOTOWN legal battle in the early 80's Does anyone know the specifics on Teena Marie's legal battle with Motown in the early 80's. I recently found out that there's a law named after Teena. I understood the problem to be that Motown wasnt releasing Teena's records but that cant be true because she came out in 1979 with "Wild and Peaceful." "Lady T" in 1980 and she released both "Irons In The Fire" and "It Must Be Magic" in 1981 and by late 1982 she was on Epic so how could Motown have not be releasing her albums?

I once read an article about this case, but it was so long ago that I forgot the specifics. But I do know that, shortly after 'It Must Be Magic' came out in 1981,Teena sued Motown for unpaid royalties.Even though her records were selling, she wasn't making alot of money. In 1982,Motown threatened to release some old Teena Marie demos and package it as her "new album".This never happened,Teena won the court case and she was thus able to sign with Epic Records.
