Prince gaining in Billboard chart

http://www.billboard.com/...popcat.jsp

"The Very Best of Prince" is the 'Greatest Gainer' on this week's Pop Catalog album chart, soaring from no.15 last week to no.2 this week. All the press lately is beginning to translate into album sales. Hopefully he can move some copies of Musicology as well!

Does Prince earn anything from sales of his catalogs?

I was simply never interested in it. I mean, I've got all those albums anyway. At least The Hits/B-Sides gave me a lot of old stuff I'd never heard before, plus Pink Cashmere. I'm not really into 'Greatest Hits' compilations anyway. I dig albums. I've made a couple of exceptions here and there:

I held out until last year when I saw the CD on sale at Virgin for $9.99. I played it once in the car during a road trip. It served a purpose when I only wanted to hear a brief overview.

Yes- Prince is not only the performer- but the producer, writer, composer, etc.

It's the same for me, too. I have everything on it. I made my own CD-R of the Very Best of Prince. Because I used full-length versions and live versions, I could not fit everything on it. If you have hits 1/2, why would anyone but the not-real Prince fans buy it. I'd rather spend the money on something new and fresh, like the Wig in a Box compilation.

A standard recording contract would entitle him to mechanical royalties (for the publishing rights) plus royalties from the recordings on the CD. If Warner owns the full rights, it can make any compilation it wants to. I wonder if this is why 7 did not make the very best. Did Prince's last contract give him right of refusal?

why buy that one. It's incomplete anyway. YOu can't cram one CD with his best, because all of his music is the best.

Plus if I wanted that CD - I could make myself - HELLO! razz

Sorry, babe! I'm a collector. I have everything Prince/WB has released on Prince from 1978 to present day. It's essential to have the complete catalog when one like myself claims to be a supporter. Of course, my copy of VBOP is still in the plastic.

I didn't refuse to buy it because of any moral issue. If it had unreleased stuff on it, I would've bought it in a heartbeat.

As it is, I have The Hits/B-Sides, and that is one AMAZING set. I'm always playing the B-Sides disc.

This is for the ULTRA-Fair-Weather fan . . .

I think if it weren't so shitty and incomplete (ending after "Money Don't Matter Tonight", right?) I might consider it. It's just very useless!

I refuse to buy it. I mean, we all have ALL of those songs. No new ones, I know its both Prince's and WB's fault, but still. Both should have made an agreement to include some new tracks. I'll probably end up getting it in a USED or cut out bin if I see it under $5 ONE day since I'm a collector.

Yes, good news, and I'm pleasantly surprised to see it's actually gone gold (see notes at the bottom of the billboard page).

Well people, I never buy Greatest Hits anyways, unless they come with previously unreleased material (new songs or versions...)
why do you need to buy this one? confused
I won't, and I certainly didn't buy the compilation WB made some years ago.
Burn your own compilation(s) and save the money to buy Musicology, other singles or bootlegs.
This is a waste of money demon

even though it's a bit of a scam for WB, VBoP is actually a good start for newbies - it was the first album of his I bought after Purple Rain. gave me a great introduction to his music. neat summation of his hits.

I'm glad ain't no one gonna spend their hard earned money for that, cuz Warner's don't need anymore of this man's money. I refuse to buy it. Until Warner gives back his music, I refuse to buy any material from any artist on the label!

VBOP is also up to #6 on Billboard's R&B catalog albums chart this week. Purple Rain re-enters at #11 (I think) on the same chart.
