John Blackwell's HOB Solo

Watching Mr. Blackwell's solo last night at the House Of Blues was like watching a streetballer schooling an opponent! Jawdropping wasn't it?!

I wasn't there, but I know from experience that Blackwell ALWAYS puts on a jaw-dropping performance. Brotha got MAD SKILLS!

A woman standing to my right just stared during his solo, then turned and stared at me until I looked over at her...when I did, her eyes were SO wide, just in total shock...she yelled into my ear "Who is that drummer??"...I said his name was John Blackwell, and she looked back up at him...then looked back at me and said "He's amazing!!"...I just nodded... nod

Oh I know how good he is. I've seen him a bunch of times but something about last night's solo blew me away.

Blackwell he extremely talented... He plays his drums lie other would brush their teeth: it's natural!! I'm sure he was born with drum sticks in his hand...

Temptation

You're right, this one was different. It wasn't just his usual "go wild" solo with sticks twirling. He dropped seriously funky beats and then started dropping in spaces (silent beats). He laid the foundation then started pulling bricks out of it. It was subtle, sublime and verrry funky.

The whole NPG is just *scary* right now.

I would have to agree JB was ON all nite!! at the Maui show I had a chance to talk with him about his solo on SHHH
and being the modest and gracius man his is stated that he had messed up but tonite would be better(which it was!) but HOB in LA was the best out of the last 5 show without a doubt!!

BTW not to take anything away from John but Rento was also on fire Sunday nite. Seems to me he just had somethang to get out of his system cuz boy threw down. Prince seemed to even watch from the side of the stage and cock his head to side and listen. Man was intense.
