The Hawaiian Xperience Hey everyone!
I live here in Honolulu & went to the show last night. I've been a hardcore fan for 20 years now & yesterday was truly a great day for me. Even though I am a hardcore fan, I never had been in the fortunate situation of seeing him play one of his legendary aftershows. That all changed last night...finally!! The band was: Renato Neto, Rhonda Smith, Rad, John Blackwell, Candy, Maceo, Greg Boyer, Chance Howard. SOUNDCHECK: We were told to be there at 5pm but were not let in until 5:45pm. The wait was Xcruciating because we could hear the music from the outside. When we finally did go in, we got to hear the final 45 minutes of the soundcheck. I have one of the worst memories in the world but there was a lot of instrumental jamming & "Dance 2 The Music" (Sly Stone) was played. Prince did not sing during the soundcheck. CONCERT: As I mentioned before, my memory sucks so I can't list the songs in the order they were played but these are the songs: 1. Let's Go Crazy (this was the opener) 2. I Feel 4 U 3. Controversy 4. Let's Work 5. How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore 6. D.M.S.R. 7. Take Me With U 8. The Beautiful Ones 9. When Doves Cry 10. I Would Die 4 U 11. Baby I'm A Star 12. Purple Rain 13. Kiss 14. Sign 'O' The Times 15. U Got The Look 16. Alphabet St. 17. Question of U 18. Insatiable 19. Nothing Compares 2 U 20. Shhh 21. The Ride 22. The Everlasting Now 23. Soul Man (lead vocal by Chance Howard) If I've forgotten anything, I'm sure someone else will chime in. I don't think I have to mention that the concert was incredible, awesome, blah, blah, blah. We all know what Prince is capable of & he had this audience in the palm of his hand the moment he stepped on stage. The crowd was really receptive & even the "Purple Rain Poseurs" (yup, that's what I call 'em) had a good time. Most of the songs were played in their entirety (which is always a good thing!) with some additional jamming. Prince seemed to be having a lot of fun on stage & was getting great feedback from the crowd. After the show, it was announced on the PA that the "Official aftershow will be at Volcanoes Nightclub". Up until that moment, they always referred to it as an after-party so my hopes were high! AFTER-SHOW: When we walked in to the club, it was obvious that Prince was going to play (Takumi was setting up his guitar). My wife & I got to stand about a foot away from the stage & it was one hell of an Xperience! He came on around 1:20am & played till 2:30am. The 2 Prince songs that were played were "1+1+1 is 3" & "All The Critics Love U in (Hawaii)". The others I believe were covers (somebody else will have to help me out here). Chance Howard did take the lead on "No Diggity" & Rad took the lead on another song. Prince mostly played keyboards during the after-show, making it 4 keyboards going at the same time (with Chance, Renato & Rad). If I recall correctly, he only played guitar for 1 or 2 songs. It was a great jam, & Prince had a huge grin on his face the whole time. He seemed to be getting a kick out of teasing Chance Howard every once in a while. Come to think of it, I had a huge-ass grin on my face the whole time Prince was onstage. I seriously had a great time. The only negative I could think of was that even though I had great seats (8th row, center), there were the aforementioned "Purple Rain Poseurs" who had better seats than some of us NPGMC members. How does this happen?! But I can't complain because the only thing that NPG promised was that the Club members would be in the 1st 15 rows & they did deliver on that promise. I just wish that in the future, they would be able to somehow make it so that the club members get All the seats in the front & then fill the rest of the place up with the casual fans. So there it is. There were so many little anecdotes & other little fun stuff that happened but I think this is long & boring enough. thanX for reading!

oops
Not that this is going to make a damn bit of difference in anybody's lives (& if it does, there's really something wrong with you)...but we weren't let into the soundcheck until 6:15pm, not 5:45pm. I told you my memory is horrendous. Yes, we stood there for an hour & 15 minutes waiting. It seemed way longer. But I'm not complaining. I'm not.

Yup! That was the easiest way for me to remember & list the songs that were played! But you know what? I still forgot something: he also did "The One" with "Fallin'" (by Alicia Keys).
