Morris Hayes has revealed that the New Power Generation are going to record a new album.

The band were Prince's backing group for many years appearing on several albums, most notably 1991's 'Diamonds and Pearls', and toured with him extensively.

Are they allowed to make new music as the NPG?

Also worth mentioning. They're doing a live digital PPV on September 13 from First Avenue. $9.99

It would seem a little odd for them to make an album under that name. As NPG has always meant 'Prince and his band' in the past on record.

Still want them to make it, and to hear it though!

Exactly. If Prince ain't singing on it, I have zero interest in hearing Tony M. try to play guitar or rap on something new, or hear another dry ass drum section programming from Kirk. They are (most of them) gifted players, but form under another name and do it on a new playing field. I would sort of feel the same way if The Revolution made new music. Do it as a new band name/project, and move to a new field of play. The NPG or Revolution ain't that without Prince on the mic.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

If the Grateful Dead can go on for 20+ years after Jerry Garcia's death, there's no reason NPG can't do the same.

I'm really excited to see what they can do. They don't seem like they're falling into the trap other associates fell into where they overproduce their music into digital noise. More organic funk albums is what the world needs.

I think it's a great plan for them to come up with and play new music. Any skills they learned from Prince should be used, we all know that is what he'd want, that's part of the legacy. I like the notion that they aren't planning to spend the rest of their lives playing only his music.

I think the estate would be best suited to allow this to happen as it keeps Prince alive, which can only be a good thing. Why not take it one stage further and have a bonus disk of original vault material!

All new material.

We're going the studio soon and we're going to be working on stuff. We're gonna come together like we used to back in the day, we're going to set up shop and just jam. We already have stuff that we've been working out on the road. I think we have a good head start on some really killer stuff.

Okay! Let 'em roll! I want to hear what they can do and it is fine for them to remain as the NPG. I'd only hope that they don't dissappoint the name. cool
