Those guys were legendary musicians as well. I bet that'd be a good show. Apparently they just did something like this with Prince at the Celebration.

they really were, Elvis was a great bandleader and knew what he wanted. Lots of people deride the vegas years, the music and the musicians. Those musicians were some of the best in the business.

wasn't a huge follower of theirs but did watch some of their prince covers. It's a great idea for them to get a lead singer, none of them ever convincingly sang lead. I liked andre cymone's singing at first ave, he had an identical vocal timbre as prince that had to come from just being from the same place, too bad he chose not to come with them.

I saw them in Chicago and the energy was amazing. Of course Prince was missed, as they miss him too, but they did a phenomenal job. Wendy's solo on Purple Rain was spot on. The show from beginning to end was incredibly entertaining and theraputic.

i thought it was interesting that the revolution mentioned last week that prince thought he'd be part of the 27 club, wonder why he thought that when, by most accounts, he really didn't do much if any drugs and alcohol. He did mention in the mojo interview that people around him were always worried about him working himself to death which, considering how hard he worked, was not just something people said to him for no reason.

He mentioned that in that 85 RS interview that they felt he would just wind down like a machine thats was finished jokingly.

I agree and said as much preban when he delved into the 3rdeyegirl project and got lambasted for saying he should retire and work on legacy things now (remasters etc).

I suspect that, in part, he just didn't know any other way to live. We like to think of Prince as fearless - and he was, artistically. But I wonder if he didn't feel a little trapped. "My only competition is...well...me, in the past."

It would have totally gone against his essential nature. It wasn't that he didn't want to. It was that he literally couldn't.

The Phllly TLA show Sunday night was awesome! I think that "Kiss" & "When Doves Cry" perfectly captured the instrumentation of the recordings and they let the audience sing. In fact, the audience was drowning out the vocals all night long so the hole at center stage didn't seem as big. Wendy did great with some P solos. They played Roadhouse Garden and suddenly only 10 were singing along. LOL.

There was a funny moment: Mark was doing the "one time, two times thing" and said "25 times" (just like the Syracuse show). It was a trainwreck. I couldn't help but yell "You're fined!"

I thought they did a great job setting the right tone and Scotty is the sound guy, so they had the right samples.

it had to be a burden for sure but I happen to think he had the right idea, I just don't know if he needed a fucking complex. He needed a studio and a place to rehearse, the rest of it had to be a lot to keep up with. I wonder how many employees were generally needed to keep the place going. I guess what I'm saying is, that as a musician myself, I understand the need to have a place where you can have solitude and time and not worry about the things everyone else is telling you you should worry about. I only wish I had that, I've been a musician a long time and the hardest part is dealing with the rest of the world infringing on what you're doing. I think that Prince had ambitions of being a second Motown and early on, many people were saying that's what he was creating but it never panned out that way and for the most part, he was the only one capable of making money in that business.

I saw them at B.B kings. They were amazing!

I think so. He even said in the Rolling Stone article in toured to keep it running and keep in mind after Musicology his tours were much shorter and mainly the festival circuit in Europe.

saw them in philly. AMAZING. it was SO ... moving - volume, rhythm, bass, keys, emotions, everything. they purposely had the audience sing the loudest, and it was just what we needed.

i never imagined i'd be singing WITH the girls. mountains choked me up immediately, and i wept, happily. their faces were so comforting, and i felt for the first time that maybe we can get through it.

and look, i don't go out much. it takes a lot for me to make the effort.

TOTALLY WORTH IT. GO IF YOU CAN.

Wendy wasn't always up to nailing Prince's solo's (who is?) but she did phenomenally well on When Doves Cry, as did the entire band. That was the high point for me in a night full of high points. It was amazing. Truly fantastic, and the vibe of the crowd was great.

they all nailed it. the guitar solo, the keyboard solo - i recorded it on my phone with my hands straight up over my head for 5+ minutes. nailed it. (actually that was the only way i could see all of them - too many talls in front of me.)
