Strange that they would close off half the arena. He must not be so popular in Montreal I guess?

I am afraid I will be a little late...like 8.30-ish...I doubt that he will kick it off on time, but what do you guys think? Last time I saw him at the Bell Centre I *think* he was about 45 mins late...

.

nah, i think the bell centre is just waaaay bigger than any of the other venues he's played on the hit n run tour. Louisville Palace had around 2.5k each night, Fox Theatre in detroit had ~5k, Royal Farms in Baltimore had ~13.5k, Sony Centre in Toronto had ~3k. To me it just looks like he doesn't want to play to a larger crowd. Maybe he wants a different show than an arena show, or maybe he doesn't feel he can sell out a venue that's too large, who knows.

.

It's neat to note that the venues with the smallest capacity are the ones that got multiple shows. Like he's thinking, 'I'm going to make sure i sell at least 5k tickets a night...'

Hum, not sure, but the 5 times I saw him in 2011 he was right on time I think. With chance you'll just miss 3eg if they start the show.

Yeah, I love Graffiti Bridge movie, so what? ''Oooooooooooh Montreal, say it!''

U've been very lucky if Prince has actually started shows on time 4 U! I've been 2 many of them and the wait and delays can be excruciatingly long. This week's Toronto 8pm show started by 8:10 pm. The 11 pm show was much later due 2 the fact that the room had 2 be fully emptied and re-filled with patrons. Montreal, with its 1 show should not need 2 start right on time as there is no 2nd show.

As 4 "special guest 3RDEYEGIRL"... they are Prince's band, just like The Revolution and The NPG used 2 be. They are NOT opening the show. There is no opening act, unless a surprise act is booked at the last-minute. Listen 4 Prince 2 announce: "We are 3RDEYEGIRL." He is the lead singer of the band.

Oh it varies quite a lot depending on the situation. Sometimes there is an opening band, sometimes not. Sometimes he starts within 15 min of the posted time, sometimes not. I would probably try to be there at the posted start time and prepare to be patient.

It's not like other artists... like with the Who tour, after the first few shows set the pattern, you can count on the opening band coming out on time at 8 and the Who on stage at 9:15 every night. Prince isn't that predictable.

Nah...nothing strange about it. These shows are being announced just two or three days before showtime....Prince has proven time and time again that when he does a traditional tour he fills up 20,000 plus with no problem....But the Hit & Run gigs are far from traditional....

That's why most of the venues on this tour have been 13,000 seats and under....Because of the logistics and short notice style announcements of the Hit & Run gigs...

I have waited two hours for him to start though recently he has been punctual on the first show, and then late on the second. Though the man is full of surprises. Often the first night at a given location is rocky.

Great show

Many hits

As I walked into the venue I heard Wow and Funk n Roll, he then played Guitar, Lets Go Crazy Reloaded, and the the hits started to pour in - take me with you, raspberry berret, breakdown, when doves cry, sign of the times, hot thing, he played the piano a bit of diamond and pearles, more of how come you dont call me anymore, nothing compares 2 u, kiss, purple rain, the dance electric, cool/dont stop till you get enough, misty blue (i guess), i would die for you, controversy, little red corvette, housequake.

The order is messed up, but the show was great. I consider myself a hardcore fan, I really would have loved to hear the love we make, dmsr, the q of you, computer blue, etc, but he played a very enjoyable show.

Highlights of the show, to me personally when doves cry, sign of the times, which he played back to back. His voice sounded great, the sound was very good. People in the audience seemed very pleased with his performance.

It looked like they were able to reach full capacity (well, of the sections that were available). That being said, I got bumped up a level when I got to the arena, from section 222 to 117. Can't really argue with that!

Dont know if there will be an aftershow, I didnt stay long enough.

Last time he was at the Bell Centre I guess ppl werent impressed with his show, which is weird, I remember he played quite a few hits, anyhow, this one was the show for the casual fan and I think he made up for it.

Since it was my review of the show, yes, I confirm it was a great show. I dont quite see the point of your reply. "thanks for taking the time to report on it" would have been more appropriate, but I guess "some folks" are like P's mother...

Prince delivers a flawless, four-act performance at the Bell Centre

With little advance warning, a purple storm rolled through Montreal on Saturday.

After announcing the concert only a few days beforehand, Prince delivered a greatest hits set at the Bell Centre as part of his HITnRUN pop-up tour.

“Look at how many we got here on just a few days’ notice,” Prince told the audience right before the two-and-a-half hour set’s fourth act. “I call that love.”

To fill up the floor and lower bowl of the Bell Centre in three days was, as Prince observed, an impressive feat. Putting on a surprise show of this magnitude also required a little bit of chutzpah. Perhaps even more audacious was his request for audience members to keep their phones in their pockets for the duration of the show. Surprisingly enough, most abided by the Purple One’s rule, while those who didn’t were warned by security. (Using a phone during the show was supposedly grounds for expulsion, but transgressors in my vicinity were spared such punishment.)

The early part of the set was an opportunity for the fit 56-year-old and his current backing band, 3rdEyeGirl, to engage in some beefy four-piece hard rocking. Following an introduction where they played behind a purple curtain, they opened with “Wow” and “Funknroll,” both tracks from their collaborative 2014 effort Plectrumelectrum. One of the members of 3rdEyeGirl, guitarist Donna Grantis, has a jazz performance degree from McGill University. (Prince briefly noted the Canadian connection, omitting the specifics.) The title track from the aforementioned album, also played early, might be as close as Prince will come to channeling Led Zeppelin.

The band added a four-piece horn section and three backing vocals from time to time, depending on how much funk was required, although it was the new material involving the Prince-guitar-bass-drum quartet that provided a little bit of intrigue in the earlygoing.

As the night progressed, the band shifted away from heavy guitars to unabashed party funk — eventually capped by a playful cover of Wild Cherry’s Play that Funky Music. Somewhere in between, nearly all of Prince’s 80’s hits were accounted for, while his 90’s material was largely pushed aside. Even Prince beginners who may have purchased a ticket on a whim likely came away satisfied, as he didn’t deprive them the opportunity to see obvious hits “1999,” “When Doves Cry,” “Kiss,” “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Raspberry Beret” delivered live in a straightforward manner. (Although “Let’s Go Crazy” was slower than on record.)

Depending on how you look at things, Prince and his band either played four encores or took four breaks. although each respite allowed them to change musical direction, as well as give Prince some solo time at the piano. “When Doves Cry” and “Sign O’ the Times” were performed that way after the first intermission, with Prince bathed in artificial moonlight. The third act was absolutely hit-laden with the likes of “Diamonds and Pearls,” “Forever in My Life,” “Little Red Corvette” and “Nothing Compares 2 U,” while the fourth act was ostensibly devoted to Purple Rain’s title track. They concluded the funky final stretch with “I Would Die 4 U.”

Invariably, Prince shows in Montreal will forever be compared to the two epic performances he gave during the Jazz Fest in 2011. Those intense four-to-six hour long extravaganzas were once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and those lucky enough to have been there likely considered this latest show to be slightly less adventurous.

To those who had never seen him live, and Prince alluded to them and their unique needs before kicking off “When Doves Cry,” Saturday’s HITnRUN show was a flawless introduction.

here's a review in french

the translation of the title in english is

L'iconoclaste a enchainé avec les chansons pop-rock Annah Welton Drum Solo, Take Me With U et The Beautiful Ones.

  • Cindy Ord / NPG Records
  • Cindy Ord / NPG Records

Mentionnons ces quelques pièces envoyées au clavier par le chanteur au milieu de la soirée : How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore, The Beautiful Ones, The Most Beautiful Girl In the World, Little Red Corvette et la poignante The Breakdown.

Nothing Compares to…

… THE Prince, rien de moins.

Great show

FunkyMan

I also attended the Montreal show. This was my 7th Prince concert, but the first in quite a few years. I also consider myself a pretty hard-core fan, and definitely prefer the rarities to the standard hits material. It was also, by far, the closest I've been to the stage (orchestra pit GA tix) - amazing!

That being said, this concert satisfied both types of fan - the casual fan who keeps screaming Purple Rain at the show (ugh), and myself. It was great hearing some of the new stuff (Wow, Funk N Roll, Plectrum Electrum, and Breakdown). The show then delved a bit too far into the hits for me. That being said, I was very surprised at how funky the band was. I expected a rock-heavy show, but the band can jam too! This was likely in large part to the NPG Hornz.

At the end of the second encore (the required Purple Rain closer), and 2 hours after starting, I expected it to be done. But, I was thrilled to see a third encore consisting an Mountains, Dance Electric, and Housequake with an extended jam in the middle. It was amazing to see Prince the bandleader, as the entire band was watching him like hawks. A lot of this was clearly improvised and it was fascinating.

So, I left feeling very satisfied. This show reinforced my belief that Prince is by-far the best concert performer alive right now!

Sad times.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.
