One of the 3rdeye chicks doing spoken announcements before the shows

How irritating that must be? Especially if you are tolerating them in the first place. They come out like a elementary school teacher giving rules of the class before a field trip.

whatever, people are not respecting the rules thats the main problem: cameras and cell phones are not allowed,

thats just how it is at a Prince concert:

Its been like that for many years, you may be thrown out from the concert if you dont follow Prince's rules. Its only fair imo. wink

ps its only fair to begin a concert like that... because everyone should enjoy the concert - being present - instead of taking pictures all the time and looking at the show through the lense.

what I am saying is she is right in her speak,

the message is clear I don't think its annoying like you do, and I don't feel sorry at all, for the young girls crying when they break the rules and are thrown out.. its their own fault. Amen...

wink

The way they do it is pretty cool, actually. They try to engage and explain why there is a no cellphone policy.

There is a sense of "entitlement" when people want to use their cellphones at a concert. You are not allowed, period.

If 3EG seem like schoolteachers, then that's good because fans need to be treated like schoolchildren. Seriously, they do.

I would much rather have this than artists awkwardly or angrily asking people to put phones away in the middle of a performance.

It would be great if artists could also tell the audience to shut the fuck up during concerts. I didn't pay to hear you talk to your dumbass friends about nonsense the whole time. Shut up and listen to the music.

Just imagine if Prince turned this anti-cellphone policy into a rock opera, like Roger Waters did with The Wall....

It would be better than some of his albums!

Why is it worse having Hannah do it than having some venue respresentative? Or a disembodied voice before a film? Get over it.

.

And if you're really just tolerating them, go home and listen to a boot with a band you like. Then you can enjoy your Prince without it being "diluted" by their poor musical skills, or whatever.

That "chick" is the lovely Ms. Hannah Whelton, and it's not irritating at all. I don't have a problem with it and plenty of other people don't have a problem with it.

OP - sounds like you have never been to a concert where the jerk in front of you is blocking your view by recording the show with a full size iPad.

That isnt the point of the post. I am rritated with the light weight chicks coming out before the show with the bs announcement. I have always agreed with Prince's protection of his material. I have been to over 50 shows going back to 1982 - I dont need anyone to tell me hoew it is at Prince concerts.

At the movies,a voice comes over the PA system to ask people to be polite and act right with te technology. This could easily be done and it would carry far more authority.

you are missing the point. I am not supporting the use of technology. I think cell phones shouldnt even be allow in the building during concerts. THere is technology that can render every phone in a building almost useless but no one will use it. THey should

I experience some schadenfreude when the guards eject phone-wagging individuals. So rude they are. And checking email during a Prince concert? Does not compute.
Hannah's spiel is just fine.

I'm guessing they go with the personal announcement because it's more personal--they don't want to come off as a cold authority coming down on you, but rather as a friendly presence encouraging to have even more fun than you would with your phone. Apparently, that doesn't work for some people. The other approach doesn't work for some other people. And some people can't put their phone away no matter who asked them to or what's happening.

This post is perfect. I posted before on the concert page for Detroit about just how many warnings people got on the way in (borderline overkill) but like EddieC said, some people just cannot do what is asked of them. For 3EG to walk out and do that, it means that it's a big deal for them as a band.

.

Is a Prince concert the place where you want to "test authority" or "take risks"? Is it really the place that you have to check Facebook and text your friends, or get a full-length video of a song? It's disrepectful to not only Prince, but every other concertgoer. I don't want to stare at your cellphone screen all night -- you're ruining it for everyone.

.

Again, there's usually the herd mentality of entitlement that instinctively thinks "Nah man, F that, I'm gonna do what I want". confused

they probably feel that more people will pay attention if an actual band member comes out and makes the announcement. People will quiet down if a band member walks out on stage and will more likely listen to what this person has to say. This way, people also can't complain and say they didn't see the sign or the note on the ticket. As someone else said, it's more personal and probably more effective when a band member makes the announcement than some random venue representative or just a video posted on the wall before the show.

Agreed. Nice way of putting it. It felt like a heartfelt plea. And Hannah explained why they do not want gizmos present.
