They played Loose!(!), I thought that song would be on some kind of Paisley Park black list. Sounds like a good night, thanks for the report. So you liked the new Prince material... but were the lyrics actually deep and/or intriguing? And do you have any examples? I remember Bream saying that The Gold Standard had even more lyrics about putting your phone anyway, so that comes as a relief. Hundalasiliah!

Setlist Plectrum Electrum instrumental Lets Go Crazy Take Me With You U've Got the Look Raspberry Beret (Cassandra was invited to participate) Musicology "Paisley Park chant" instrumental jam Ballad of Dorthy Parker Nothing Compares to you Then Kandace was invited to sing "First Time Ever I saw Your Face" Kiss
End of Prince portion of the show.
Then we all went back into the smaller Love 4 One Another/NPGMC room to here Kance play.
Then....back to the big room with Prince taking over as DJ with Josh Welton on his Mac computer.
They played This Could Be Us and about 5-6 other new Prince songs that were very funky and very modern sounding. It was pretty exciting stuff, I think the Gold Standard amongst others including the new mix of Funk n Roll which got the place dancing.

Also, I was totally surprised that the DJ was allowed to play NAsty Girl and Face Down which were played over the dance party portion of the event. I thought those songs were on the blacklist. I didn't here Loose being performed but I bailed early (2:00am).

Interesting. Didn't prince say he doesn't understand why people want to revisit the past by looking back on purple rain. Judging by his set list, he sure likes to. tollyc said: Setlist Plectrum Electrum instrumental Lets Go Crazy Take Me With You U've Got the Look Raspberry Beret (Cassandra was invited to participate) Musicology "Paisley Park chant" instrumental jam Ballad of Dorthy Parker Nothing Compares to you Then Kandace was invited to sing "First Time Ever I saw Your Face" Kiss

thanks to everyone for the reports, now can anyone describe the new songs in any kind of detail!

No particular Order:
Unexpected ("Wow"): Amazing. Same song as Liv Warfield but killer guitar from P. This Could be Us: I am feeling this song WAY more than the 15 second snippet. It's a nice song, not sure it's consisered classic material.
Funk n Roll new Mix (Amazing). Yep, could be classic. The place erupted when this one was played over the PA. Gold Standard was pulsating dance music (kinda reminded me of Nasty Girl) Some new rap/spoke word song over a DAys of Wild/3121 like groove
He didn't play Another Love, White Caps, etc... like he did previously weeks.

I thought the new Prince songs were very R&B/Funk sounding and they are very current sounding as well. Not sure yet about the Plectrum stuff, but I think this new Prince album is gonna be HOT!

Just like some people find too much positivity. There has to be a balance. Not saying that Bart Van Halen complaining about every single thing to oxygen being in the air makes sense, but since Prince has had something like 15 listening parties for an album that we have no evidience of actually exisiting, it is becoming a running joke. He's wide open to criticism on this matter.
Instead of saying everything is wonderful or everything is horrible, it's great to see different viewpoints. If everybody just went around saying everything is wonderful, we would have a boring crappy world to live in.

Here's a write-up I posted on Facebook about the new songs:
As most fans know already, Wow is Prince / 3RDEYEGIRL's version of a song that Liv Warfield released under the title The Unexpected. The 3EG version is HEAVY on guitars...somewhat reminiscent of the song Boom from the Lotusflow3r album, but heavier, and more grounded (whereas Boom is more ethereal and trippy). Amazing song... the choruses (well, if you can call one word repeated, a proper chorus, haha) are very anthemic and soaring. I got chills! I am in 100% agreement with Jesse that this song needs to be released ASAP!
The biggest surprise of the new songs for me was AINTTURNINROUND (read "Ain't Turnin' 'Round") -- it's flat-out the heaviest song Prince has ever been associated with! When I say "heavy," I'm talking full-on metal/grunge territory, like Nirvana, Metallica, Megadeth, etc. Absolutely FIERCE! Hannah is on vocals, and the verses are more melodic/poppy in structure than the rest of the song. I loved it, but my main thought was, "Are a majority of Prince's fanbase gonna dig this, or is it going to alienate a lot of them?" I think it's gonna be either "love it" or "hate it," with no in between.
When they played This Could Be Us, it sounded to me as if the mix was different than the snippet that came out a while back, but that could simply be due to the fact that I was finally hearing it on a proper speaker system rather than just through my laptop's internal speakers! Here, it sounded so full, rich and vibrant! Whereas the snippet left me ambivalent, here, I was thinking, "I could really grow to love this tune." Prince's layered vocal harmonies were particularly impressive!
The new remix of FUNKNROLL was astounding! As Jon Bream wrote in his recent Star Tribune article, this version is a lot funkier and "crunchier" than the original. Vibe-wise, I kept thinking of a hybrid of "Black Sweat," "3121," and "Laydown." Like I said, my impressions may seem a bit strange, but just go with me on this, haha. Next to "Wow," this is probably the track I would most like to own ASAP!
I heard one other track, a ballad called The Gold Standard. It was hypnotic and seductive, with a smoldering intensity bringing to mind the likes of "Scandalous" and (to a much lesser degree) "The Beautiful Ones." There were both sung (falsetto) and spoken parts in this song.

Thanks for the descriptions, they do sound good! So does Wow (The Unexpected) end with Prince soloing on guitar? That's what I was wondering after hearing the bootlegged 2/3 mins snippet. As for FunkNRoll, is the new version different from the FunkNRoll remix that was bootlegged?

WHAT A GREAT NIGHT!!! This post is a little late, but I'm just recovering from a no-sleep weekend, getting back to work in Atlanta. All I can say is the new Prince material is pretty amazing. "The Gold Standard" is lovely and "Funk N Roll" (a re-mix?) is insane! Prince is using some new far out galactic drum sounds for his beats- NEVER heard Prince bump like this! Does anyone know the title of the track with Prince rapping on it?-his flow was absolutely sick!!! On the Rock side, "WOW" was also impressive, and gave me a new interest in the 3rdeyegirl album. I was kind of skeptical of some of the newer Prince /3rdeye tunes from catching a few samples online and reading about them on various sites, but HEARING them in real time is beliving! Really, really excited now about this new music. Now....if could we just get a release date!
I haven't been to Paisley in over ten years, so I had no exepections other than to hear some new tunes and grab some merch on the way out. I was simply WISHING that I choose the right night to see a Prince performance. Man, I picked the right night!- a tight, yet fun and flowing show that was another knock out by Prince. Think the performance ran about 45 minutes, but it was very energetic and Prince appeared to be in a playful mood. The biggest surprise was that P started playing so early. Just minutes after we were sent to the larger sound stage, the DJ was playing "Wow". All of a sudden, P and the Girls were on stage! Highlights for me were, "Pectrum Electrum", "Musicology" (so funky, James Brown would have been proud!) "Dorthy Parker", and "Kiss" (yet another arrangment for this classic). I thought 3rdeyegirl was legit- Ida is something serious on bass- no joke, Donna is ripping on guitar, and Hanna held things down quite well on the drums. Believe the hype on these girls (wonder women)- they can play!
Kandace has a nice voice, but man, is it me, or is she a clone of Andy Allo? (her looks not voice). I almost called her Andy when I passed her earlier in the night(crazy). Hopefully her career goes far. Always good to see /hear John Blackwell. The Jazz group (didn't get their name) started the night strong. Would love to see them again in a small club setting.
Shut out to Paisley Park and Perkins!- Paisley for being still the most magically music filled place on the planet, and to Perkins restraunt for still having some of the best french toast a brother could ask for! (kept me alive enough to make my 6:00am flight back home). Thank you to all the familer faces (Kirky J, Karen, ) and to everyone who could attend. There was a nice crowd. Double shout out to all the ladies for looking good and representing well- yall kept it sexy but classy! To all the Orgers, much love for giving me needed information about the logistics of the event. Maybe I met a few of you and didn't know it. Regardless, thank you again.
Hearing the new material on stage sound system was a blast. As someone else mentioned, hearing tunes like "Loose" or "Strange But True" sounded really alive again. It was a really great night at the Park.

It was an amazing evening. Free parking in the Paisley lot. Doors opened on time. To see and hear John Blackwell, Andrew Gouche and Marcus Anderson in the Love4OneAnother room was amazing. They were playing as we walked in. Blackwell is an amazing drummer and the others are no slouches either! As they were finishing the last song the doors to the soundstage opened and went right over there. Prince and 3rdEyeGirl started playing within 10 minutes! A Wonderful set. Then back to the smaller room for Kandace Springs with Prince dancing, mixing sound playing percussion at the side of the stage. Then dance party. We got a ticket to turn in for a free poster on the way out. I turned mine in and picked the Essence Fest one and the woman told me I could have the other one too so got two posters and also bought the Hit & Run Tour program. A great night. Loved having live music in both rooms. [Edited 7/28/14 8:45am]
