PRINCE To Headline The 20th Anniversary Essence Festival In 2014!
Essence has announced that PRINCE will be performing at their 20th Anniversary festival 4th of July Weekend in New Orleans in 2014! In an official statement Essence had this to say about PRINCE headlining the festival: To honor this momentous occasion, ESSENCE will partner with the legendary singer/songwriter for a special community initiative led by the Rebuild the Dream Innovation Fund, which encourages young people to harness the power of media and technology, and channel their creativity into computer coding. "Welcoming an artist as iconic as Prince back to the ESSENCE Festival for a 20th anniversary performance is incredibly exciting," said ESSENCE Communications President, Michelle Ebanks. "The ESSENCE Festival is where we come together to connect to both our culture and our community, so we are pleased to support Prince and the Rebuild the Dream Innovation in advocating for our youth." "Rebuild The Dream" is run by Van Jones and Prince has worked with Jones before most recently for his "Welcome 2 Chicago" tour of 2012. For tickets to the Essence Festival, click here! Ticket packages for the entire festival range from $130.50 to $2,700. SINGLE NIGHT tickets will be available closer to the Festival's weekend. Was there in 2004 and will be there in 2014. I took my father in 2004, which was only right since he took me to my first Prince concert in 1980. But, this year, my wife has dibs. Also, I love Essence Fest. Before taking my pop, my wife and I went from 1998 - 2003, but this will be my first time since 2009. It is a great atmosphere! |

Every year one of the Networks usually airs the Final night of the Essence Music Festival...One year I had to order a New York Channel because that was the only Market airing the Essence Festival concert(I have satellite). I'd be surprise if they decide not to air the 20th Anniversary in 2014....I'll be on the look-out.. | |

I lived in New Orleans 1992-2005. I was fortunate to see Prince in 2004, once in Boloxi, Ms and and the Superdome during Essence. Typically, during the festival there are multiple acts- some on the concourse stages and the main stadium\floor stage. That night in 2004, since it was the 20th anniversary of Purple Rain, Prince called up The Time to join him. Essence supposedly paid him a seven figure fee to perform. Mysteriously, ahead of The Time, some no name band showed up, let by some clown on roller blades, moving about the stage. The guy was rocking in Ike Turner like wig,dark sunglasses and wearing what looked to be a Martial Arts/Kung Fun jump suit. Anyhow, it was Prince. He played about 45 mins in disguise. The set was heavily amplified, I remember him rolling through an 8 min version of Santana's"Soul Sacrifice" ..... I would say 60% of the 52,000 there had no idea it was Prince. He did not sing, but would occasionally speak in Al Sharpton like voice. The entire band (NPG)was in disguise from what I remember. Larry Graham and Sheila E joined on stage. The Time played for about an hour. Prince returned to play approximately a 2.5 set I thought it was a great night, due to Prince covering most of his catalogue. He even had Chaka Khan join home for an acoustic version of "Sweet Thing" before launching in "Feel For You" with Chaka and band.
