Reflecting on Vancouver and Victoria, I can only come up with superlatives for both. They were very different concerts. Vancouver had more extended songs. Victoria had a rendition of The One where I could swear James Brown was also on stage. it was something to have experienced. I agree withy the Victoria critic; i have never seen any performance this extraordinary. It is easy to sound smart when you are being snarky but, in this case, I have to sound dumb and happy. By the way,in Vancouver I could swear they wheeled the petite genius out to the stage in a black case. Is this possible? We were right in back when the band went back and forth. Am I nuts? yes, but does anyone know the answer? For the encores Prince walked back and forth with the band but, in the beginning, just the mysterious case.

he does get wheeled out to the stage in a black case and sometimes wheeled back. i did see him actually walk from below the stage 2 the dressing room areas in the arena tho that last time i saw him

Yes, he hid in a crate at the Oakland shows too. How does he keep those satin clothes so wrinkle free?? biggrin

Right. Except I'm no newbie. Been on the .org for a decade, and seeing P regularly since '88. And i STILL dont find the Sly songs boring. I loved them when I saw the Larry, Chaka, and Prince tour. And I enjoyed every other performance of them. Nothing wrong with paying respect to your elders.

Paying respect to your elders isn't the problem here...

The fact that he's been covering Sly Stone songs since 1998 is what's the problem - that's 13 years of pushing Sly Stone songs and Larry Graham.

Prince changed things up from album to album between 1980 to 1996. Things changed for the worse after 1997.

How many more times is Prince going to play Everyday People. There are also so many other songs that dude could play... he's resting on past achievements these days. His tastes aren't hip anymore and neither are his setlists.

Oh well... we had a good time at the second Toronto show and an even greater in Montreal at the jazz fest.

honestly though, there IS room for critiques of setlists by those who didn't attend.

i get that you are a purist.

i know you feel that the only people who have standing to open their mouths regarding concerts are those who attended the show, but i can sit here in minneapolis, look at the setlist and think (with a sinking heart) oh crap. he is STILL playing those tired old boring slystone songs. and that is a legitimate criticism. even though i was not in attendance at the show.

Both side are right!

With a distance just reading the setlist give you sad feelings compared what Prince could play. I can fully understand this.

Being at a show you are under a kind of "let say" magic, especially if you haven't seen him very often. And depending on the vibe of the show you do not feel sad or bad about the most famous songs. And if you attend more than one in a row like some of the orgers for the Canada shows and the sampler sets and most famous songs are performed a little bit different than you also feel not bad because you of the vibe you are in. All these people are just happy to got the chance to see him.

So friends come down and accept both ways of statements about a concert review rather than calling each other a hater or what ever name is used here.

A controversy discussion is appreciate, no doubt but would be nice if we keep the feet on the ground.

hug wink

yeahthat

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

is it starting 2 get real frustrating about this sampler set and something like the rest of my life and other classic material doesn't get the full band treatment?

Totally disagree....The sampler set is a creative way to dig into the back catalogue. And most of these songs didn't get a 'full band treatment' to begin with.

The medleys, cover songs, and sampler sets are things older artists do when they get washed up, and are no longer creative. Yet people his age like U2 play 22 or more complete full songs every single night, without chopping up songs people love. I don't really like Bruce Springsteen as much as I used to, but he is 62, and still plays over 30 full length songs, and sings all the lyrics, and doesn't play karaoke over a tape. Bruce doesn't have a background singer take 3 or 4 songs either. Prince is my favorite, and can still kick ass most nights, but shortcuts and sloppy shows happen more than they ever have. At any moment, he can be the best there is, but he also can get lazy.

On Welcome 2 America/Canada/Europe, he has had some great shows, but on Mountains for example, it is usually the girls singing, while Prince just barely sings. The Prince ass-kissers love this, and some of them act like they wish Shelby sang lead on every song. Sad, but the truth is the truth, and many seem to not pay attention.

The 15 minutes or longer version of musicology jam was great. As for the Larry Graham covers-I tend to find lack luster-no life or real passion coming across when they are normally done by Prince. But Prince's version of I want to take you higher was great. Everyday People was Prince's standard delivery. I hope someone audio recorded this night. There are some great moments. (Much better overall show than the Tacoma show-except LRC guitar solo in Tacoma was better.)

At the end of the main show, long after the house lights came on for the last time, Prince and Andy ran out on stage and waved at the few people who stuck around. In 23 years of seeing the guy perform, I've NEVER seen him do this.

I shot some video of him coming out and thanking the crowd: http://youtu.be/dKClRv8aHTs

If you're interested I also wrote a blog about the night: http://www.blog.govegan.net/prince-2/

What an amazing night. wink

No, you aren't a troll.

You're just someone complaining about an experience that you yourself did not experience.

No one here can understand how someone can complain about an experience they did not experience. Especially when all the people that DID experience it loved it.

It would be like me saying how crappy a Lambroghini rides, when I have never ridden in a Lambo. Or someone who has neve kissed your wife complaining about how she kisses.

YOU have kissed her, and YOU love the way she kisses, and YOU can certainly see how someone who's never kissed her could not POSSIBLY complain about how she kisses?

Get it?

Maybe if Prince settled in the Vancouver/Victoria area and did a month of shows, repeating much of the same setlist you'd understand how the experience is watered down the more times you see him. For an artist with his catalogue, this is absolutely ridiculously insane. He's got so many great songs that he could be performing and introducing new or less educated fans to through these shows, like L4OATheOriginal said. It's a huge missed opportunity both for us AND for him.

I haven't read all of the insults you guys are throwing around but.... I have to agree with you on this one. I love Prince & very much enjoyed seeing him in Toronto, however, seeing him at 4 shows in NY & NJ. The Toronto show, although great, it/he was nowhere as lively. The set's were more varied in NY.

I seriously got the impressing he was in a pissy mood in Toronto. I've come to the conclusion that Prince's energy levels go up when he's see's celebrities in the crowd. Not included the ones he's taken along. In NY he was giving the VIP sections dance moves to follow, making eye contact, laughing, joking all night. Even posing for photographs!!!!!!! Those 3 shows at MSG we're 3 of the best nights of my life smile Going to W2C didn't compare BUT good enough to keep me on the org. looking for his next stop smile

Have a blessed day x

But he didn't do a month of shows in Vancouver. He did one.

You guys are mad because Prince is not your personal jukebox. Too bad.

I wish you complainers were musicians and had the responsiblity to put together a setlist for multiple shows. A setlist that would sell tickets, get great reviews, and leave thousands of people delirious with joy every night.

Prince accomplishes that, and all you guys can do is whine that he didn't play something you hadn't heard in a long time.

That's really incredible. I mean, it really is.

Pick up a guitar, learn how to play all his songs, and then you can entertain yourself every single night. Problem solved!
