i have been 2 FOUR of these W2A concerts where the sampler set was used

and i'm not THE ONLY ONE that speaks about the sampler set and expresses either joy-dissapointment that these songs aren't fleshed out more

This just in: At precisely 8:35 p.m. on Saturday, the lives of nearly 6,800 Victoria funk fans were likely changed forever.

That is the exact minute Prince strode on to his lighted Love Symbol stage, grooving and gyrating to the red-hot funk of 1982’s D.M.S.R., and dressed in what appeared to be a white faux fur coat.

It took the 53 year-old Minneapolis native seconds to light up the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre like it was a Presto log. His was an entrance fit for a king.

“I bring to you real music by real musicians,” Prince said before tearing into the night’s second song, Musicology. “Y’all don’t understand, this band is tight!”

Prince didn’t stop talking, singing, and strutting during what was the final stop on his 11-date Welcome 2 Canada tour, the biggest of its kind for Prince in a decade and the first of its kind by Prince in Victoria.

He was worth the wait. Prince is the closest thing there is to James Brown at the moment, a timely assessment given that his right-hand man is sax king Maceo Parker, the former go-to guy for the Godfather of Soul himself.

Parker and Prince weren’t the only legends putting in major moves on this night. As per his previous assessment, the entire New Power Generation was in career-capping form, dropping bombs that would even the most accomplished musicians run for cover.

“Y'all like real music? Then you better call your radio station in protest!” Prince shouted after one particularly expressive passage, the type of red-hot jam that typified the night.

It wasn’t just a sold-out concert. It was a night-long stretch of songs delivered in a hockey rink transformed into church, with the main attraction testifying from the pulpit of pop. There’s no one like Prince — we knew that going in. But after this concert, I’d have to see tangible proof that there’s going to be anyone better in years to come.

Not only is he a fantastic singer, dancer and entertainer, he’s an absolutely amazing guitarist.

He let some licks fly early during a medley of Let’s Go Crazy and Delirious, only a few second’s worth, but it was the type of expressive playing that doesn’t come around very often.

When he reprised his riffing a few minutes later, during Little Red Corvette, it was like Hendrix had chosen Victoria as the spot for his resurrection. He continued along the same path with a cover of The Cars’ Let’s Go and 1999, which didn’t stop until the wheels fell off.

Prince and his band broke the momentum precisely once during the first hour, a time-out that took barely a few seconds. The group is so seasoned, so well choreographed, that his two-hour show passed by like three minutes.

Not only did they tackle a wide range of Prince material, they gave fans a healthy dollop of covers. Sly and the Family Stone’s Everyday People was a highlight, as it gave back-up singers Shelby J., Liv, Elisa plenty of stage time to show their talents — which are considerable.

“If it was good then, it’s still good,” Prince said of Stone, one of his childhood idols.

The same could be said of Prince, who at one point was surrounded on stage by plumes of smoke. I couldn’t tell if it was man-made or the result of some spontaneous combustion occurring under his fleet feet.

“We’ll be here all night,” he said at one point. “You know how many hits I got?”

He’s got plenty. And he was indeed going on all night, as confirmed by his numerous mentions of his post-concert after-party at Sugar later Saturday. “If we’re going home tomorrow we’ve got to have an after-party tonight!” Prince said.

During the non-stop Controversy, an early hit from 1981, Prince could barely contain himself. “Is it funky y’all?” he screamed, his volume matched by a roar from the crowd.

“You like funky music here, is that true? I don’t believe you.”

Believe it, Prince. During a medley of The Time’s The Bird and Jungle Love, both of which he wrote, he brought 25 fans on stage who got off on the good foot while Prince and Co. brought the Paisley Park funk.

Just like Prince, I could go on all night with praise. And while I’m sure I’m breaking some journalistic ethics by doing so, I have to say that in my quarter-century as a concert-goer, in addition to my 15 years covering them in a professional capacity, I’ve never seen a crowd in Victoria go off the way it did Saturday night.

Nor have I witnessed a performer parlay his craft with such tenacity. It wasn’t one for the here and now. It was one for all-time. For what it’s worth, Prince’s debut in Victoria was the best concert I’ve ever seen, by a long shot.

I’m almost positive I won’t be alone in that assessment.

Although not huge fan of covers, I would have to say that I want to take you higher was the best version from Prince I've heard. I would also say that this was the most high energy show I have seen from Prince since Lovesexy. He worked it FAR more than that DMSR detroit video that most of us have seen. Saturday night was about the JAMS and that was cool.

Note: Prince also did Jungle Love. The Intro (musically) to the question of u -just before the ONE. He also threw in some Alphabet st guitar licks that turned into controversy. LRC although good wasn't as cool as Montreux (just saying).

And agreed forever in my life was a treat.

Sampler set didn't annoy me as I thought it would. It was fun and Prince was having fun. It showed.

(Just the thoughts off the top of my head. I may add more later.)

But you are not at these concert and the people who are have no issues with it. The concert cannot go on for 5 hours. P will never be able to include his entire catalogue in one concert.

again ur saying people that didn't go can't say anything based on the MUSIC choices played that night. so flip the coin then, how can u say it's great if YOU didn't attend either? And there have been people that have gone 2 the shows and said they were either disappointed in the show but YOU don't harp on them. Interesting isn't it?

journalists have one set vision sometimes and even Prince has known how fickle journalists can be. some journalists know a artists body of work very well but most don't. If u look at the reviews of these shows, just look at the songs they talk about. do they mention Gold? do they mention the question of u? no most of the time they cite 1999, raspberry etc. We as fans will mention their reactions 2 hearing gold or other classic tunes that most of the world doesn't even know.

i'll tell u a story of when i was at the NYC shows sitting next 2 a couple and prince does adore, the gentlemen asked me after the song was over and noticed the crowds reaction 2 the song "excuse me but what is the name of that song and what album is it on?" i told him the name and the album. who's 2 say that man went out and bought the album? see this is why i have said he needs 2 do more obscure tracks cause hey it just MIGHT help him sell a album from something other than Purple Rain. Every fan is a consumer and has a right 2 say whether they like it or don't. there is no right or wrong but some will bash someone because they didn't like the product that was offered.

u may not like the fact that there is opinions in a different view than yours but that's the right of the individual 2 express their joy or discontent.

honestly though, there IS room for critiques of setlists by those who didn't attend.

i know you feel that the only people who have standing to open their mouths regarding concerts are those who attended the show, but i can sit here in minneapolis, look at the setlist and think (with a sinking heart) oh crap. he is STILL playing those tired old boring slystone songs. and that is a legitimate criticism. even though i was not in attendance at the show.

Well I WAS there, and there was no way that those songs were "boring". They were played perfectly, and jammed out.

Reflecting on Vancouver and Victoria, I can only come up with superlatives for both. They were very different concerts. Vancouver had more extended songs. Victoria had a rendition of The One where I could swear James Brown was also on stage. it was something to have experienced.
I agree withy the Victoria critic; i have never seen any performance this extraordinary. It is easy to sound smart when you are being snarky but, in this case, I have to sound dumb and happy.
By the way,in Vancouver I could swear they wheeled the petite genius out to the stage in a black case. Is this possible? We were right in back when the band went back and forth. Am I nuts? yes, but does anyone know the answer? For the encores Prince walked back and forth with the band but, in the beginning, just the mysterious case.

he does get wheeled out to the stage in a black case and sometimes wheeled back. i did see him actually walk from below the stage 2 the dressing room areas in the arena tho that last time i saw him

Both side are right!

With a distance just reading the setlist give you sad feelings compared what Prince could play. I can fully understand this.

Being at a show you are under a kind of "let say" magic, especially if you haven't seen him very often. And depending on the vibe of the show you do not feel sad or bad about the most famous songs. And if you attend more than one in a row like some of the orgers for the Canada shows and the sampler sets and most famous songs are performed a little bit different than you also feel not bad because you of the vibe you are in. All these people are just happy to got the chance to see him.

So friends come down and accept both ways of statements about a concert review rather than calling each other a hater or what ever name is used here.

A controversy discussion is appreciate, no doubt but would be nice if we keep the feet on the ground.

Right. Except I'm no newbie. Been on the .org for a decade, and seeing P regularly since '88. And i STILL dont find the Sly songs boring. I loved them when I saw the Larry, Chaka, and Prince tour. And I enjoyed every other performance of them. Nothing wrong with paying respect to your elders.
