for me it would be great in arena setting for prince 2 do his newer material more cause it can serve as marketing for him 2 say 2 his audience that he's still doing music and not being a vegas act which is what i see him doing.

Yes, I think a lot of people feel the same way. When you look at the setlists there are very few songs from the mid '90s-present. He has released a ton of albums during that span and even if you just took the single "best" song per album that would nearly be enough for a show. The thing that excites me about that prospect is that we have seen that he can "rehabilitate" songs in the live setting and really make them shine. This is purely a matter of opinion but a song like "When I Lay My Hands On U" sounded so much better the way he did it at Montreux as opposed to the version that was released through the NPGMC. That was a song I never really payed much attention to until I heard the live version. How many other songs from the last fifteen years or so could he do something similar with?

I do understand when some fans complain about those of us that are dissatisfied but part of the reason that some of us complain is because we believe he can do something new and different rather than just going out there and churning out the hits again. Hits based tours certainly serve their purpose and they can be very enjoyable but it would be great to hear him try something different for a change of pace. Ideally it would be wonderful if he could alternate. Maybe one year go out and focus on pleasing the casual fans with the hits and the next year do a smaller tour that would focus on pleasing the diehards.

Yes, wouldn't that be a great compromise for everybody! I love that idea of Prince alternating between doing tours with the hits and smaller-venue tours with rarely heard gems. Now we only need him to like that idea, too. wink

That Prince still CAN do great concerts that focus on exceptional songs that he hardly ever plays is a fact, and he has proven that (during the European tour at least). We can only hope he will be in the mood to focus more on those type of concerts sometime soon. Who knows, after the last one-and-a-half years of almost non-stop touring with the hits shows, maybe he will be ready for something else next year or whenever he decides to hit the road again. smile

And since you mentioned his performance of "When I Lay My Hands on U" in Montreux ... have you seen/heard the one he did at the NSJ Festival this summer? It totally blew me away and I have not heard him do a more electrifying version! Believe me, I would also love him to do more of those songs, they are the highlights of every concert for me. biggrin Two other examples for me are "The Love We Make" and "Empty Room", both of which never did much for me before, but when I heard him do them live for the first time last fall in Europe, I was mesmerized. The three songs just mentioned have since become my favorite live songs! Prince does give them new life when he performs them live - no doubt about that! biggrin

my first reason 4 going 2 the shows honestly was seeing the symbol stage in person. the reason i kept going back was in hopes that i would see the prince i grew up with, the pioneer that didn't give a damn and he showed up only once during the 4 concerts i went to and that was in january. after the 4th show i was happy that he did mountains cause back where it started for me seeing him live at the garden in 86, the show i saw then, he didn't do mountains so i finally got 2 hear that in person. another reason i kept on going was the tour book hinted that he would do the song "the love we make" but he didn't and i was pissed! lol

but after these shows i knew after that i will never pay for a arena show by prince ever again cause what i saw those nights wasn't someone who challenged u, it was a person "selling out" and not being free. I hope ur right that he will do a tour once again for his hardcore fans with a show less on hits and more on the deep cuts and newer material. for me it would be great in arena setting for prince 2 do his newer material more cause it can serve as marketing for him 2 say 2 his audience that he's still doing music and not being a vegas act which is what i see him doing.

thanks 4 asking tho

very well said and i agree totally

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Impressive! If I did my math right, that's about 132 pounds!

I'm tired of whiny people complaining about setlists from shows they didn't go to. And I'm really tired of whiny people complaining that Prince never plays anything but his hits when clearly he plays back-catalogue stuff all the time.

If any of these whiners wanted, from the recent bootlegs that are available right now, they could make up a 50-song "concert" of Prince rarities.

I wish they would or, failing that, I wish there was a way I could block their whiny posts. The best solution, IMO, is for them to get a sticky. In fact, I will create it right now.

It will either get stickified, which solves the problem, or deleted.

let's see i went 2 all four concerts at MSG based on this same type of show ...and i bitched then and i will bitch again ..so your point is what? u have 2 go 2 a show in order 2 comment on it? damn THICK head kool aid mofo's i swear.

here's a solution 2 your 'sticky" or your "tired of hearing the whiners" ..u have the free will 2 not even read one single thread on the org and not voice your opinion or thought process on the topic at hand. but that would mean sitting on your hands aching 2 type something.

get one thing straight, the likes of you don't hear what others have said saying that everyone has a right 2 comment on something whether good or bad. not one of the "whinners" u "kool aid drinkers" condemn has said that prince sucks overall, if u enjoy what he's doing there isn't a problem but if someone or multiple people do not feel the same way then u can't have it just your way. u don't wanna read certain people's post then don't. no harm no foul

Then go whine on the threads about the concerts you DID go to! If you shelled out your hard-earned money and weren't satisified with what you got from Prince, you have every right to whine about it - in the appropriate thread.

But to whine about a show you didn't see or hear? How is that even possible? And why would you possibly think that people who went to a show in Ottawa and want to talk about that show in Ottawa could possibly care about what you think about shows that were a year ago and in another country?

I mean, really?

Now, if you go check the org discussion forum, you'll see that I have requested an Ignore feature.

And until they institute such a thing, you'll just have to live with hearing varying opinions (no matter where they were the night of the particular concert) on aspects of Prince's performances.
