Here is a review for the interested:

Prince, Scotiabank Place

Dec. 3 only

OTTAWA — Prince sure knows how to host a party. On Saturday night at Scotiabank Place, the rock legend provided the soundtrack for a purplicious good time, packing the evening full of hits so funky that 10,000 people didn’t bother sitting down for more than two hours.

Compared to the last time Prince swung through Canada, way back in 2002, when he deconstructed his hits, played covers and preached to excess, this time the Purple One created music that was surprisingly fresh and accessible. Hit after hit bombarded the crowd, like marshmallows fired from a cannon.

Dressed in a white suit that wouldn’t have been out of place on Saturday Night Fever, the ageless artist was a consummate showman who carried torches for both James Brown and Michael Jackson as much as he paid tribute to his own success. The diminutive American made his grand entrance from below, rising to the surface of the love symbol-shaped stage in a haze of fog. The configuration was in-the-round, with the crowd surrounding the stage. The concert was not a sellout, but it was one of the biggest turnouts on his Welcome 2 Canada excursion, the final leg of a world tour that started last year.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I bring to you real music,” Prince declared. “I bring to you real musicians.”

Indeed. The band that accompanied him was fantastic, capable of everything from deep funk to disco to jazz. On sax was the great Maceo Parker, who used to accompany James Brown, and another longtime sideman of Prince’s, drummer John Blackwell. The other three instrumentalists were women: Ida Nielsen on bass, Cassandra O’Neal on keyboards and lithe, attractive Andy Allo on guitar and general booty-shaking. Judging by the smiles they exchanged, she seemed to have a special relationship with Prince. Three female vocalists with stunning voices rounded out the lineup.

Prince wasted no time in getting down to business. Condensed versions of What’s My Name, Let’s Go Crazy, Delirious and 1999 flew by, delivered as a medley, before the red lights glowed and Little Red Corvette changed the pace for a moment. Prince’s guitar playing radiated fire and brimstone, while his fluid, soulful voice lent its distinctive character to each musical phrase. Also impressive was his ability to dance: at 53, Prince still moves with a sensual swagger, and the camera made sure we knew how cute his butt was.

In a nod to the 80s that was met with shrieks of delight, the artist tore through another string of popular songs, including Take Me With You, Raspberry Beret, Cream and a few bars of Michael Jackson’s Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough, eliciting a massive singalong and as much boogeying as one could get away with in a stadium seat.

It was fun, but the clipped format felt rushed. Prince would tease fans by dangling a tidbit of a song, but instead of finishing it, he’d move on to the next one, which kept them dancing but left them longing to hear a whole song.

The teasing escalated when Prince bid farewell at the one-hour mark . “Thank you, Canada,” he said. “Good night.”

Huh? It wasn’t the end, of course. There was another hour of music, but Prince made the crowd work for it, doling it out in medley-laden encores. In the first chunk, When Doves Cry, Sign of the Times, Hot Thing and I Would Die 4 U led up to a majestic version of Purple Rain that inspired everyone to sing along and wave their arms.

There was a long wait for the next encore. Almost 10 minutes went by, the house lights came up and people headed towards the exit before the eccentric bandleader deemed us worthy of more music. Reappearing in a new outfit, he performed If I Was Your Girlfriend and Kiss, which featured his still-riveting falsetto, as well as an eye-popping solo dance routine that oozed sexuality. In the third and final encore, an extended jam found fans on stage dancing with their hero as explosions of purple confetti brought the exhilarating night to a climax.

Isn't Prince playing more covers now than he did on the One Nite Alone tour?

Was Morris not there or did the reviewer just forget about him?

yes he is ..on the one night alone tour the only covers were erykah badu's didn't cha know, pass the peas and la la means i love which was on emancipation and a whole lotta love in spots

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Peter Tosh once sang, you cannot please everyone, so you have to please yourself. Prince cannot satisfy everyone and personally I am glad that he is going his thang....as the song goes "I did it my way." biggrin But one thing is for sure, the media is giving him rave reviews, and unlike some complainers, they were actually at the show

lol

here's another review: found here

One tablespoon of Prince contains all of your recommended daily dose of funk. The 10,000 or so people who saw His Purpleness rip it up at Scotiabank Place on Saturday night should be fully funked for some time to come.

There was no question – when the two-hour plus show began with a pulsing, throbbing D.M.S.R. – that it was going to be all about the funk. Prince did slow it down or change tempo with some songs, but only occasionally and briefly, as if too many moments that weren’t fully charged funk might derail the whole “house party” atmosphere he managed to build in that cavernous arena.

And, boy howdy, he sure did keep that house party going. From the first beats leading to that opening, sing-along chorus — “uh huh, all right, dance, music, sex, romance” — the man had the place in his skinny, 53-year-old hands. He played in the round, on a stage shaped like the stylized symbol that, for a time a few years ago, was his name, and he skipped and shuffled and swaggered and strutted to every corner, intent on making every fan in every corner feel a part of the party. Near the end of a sprawling “House Party” medley, Prince was in full James Brown flight, here, there and everywhere on the stage, arms outstretched as if to embrace us all and pull us into his music, his moment, his feeling. It was glorious, without question the most impressive thing I’ve seen any musician do on stage in 2011, at least.

Photos were not permitted at Prince's show in Ottawa. But, ahem, if you had been at the show, and you were in a box on the 100 level, and you took a photo halfway through the concert, it would look like this. Ahem.

If there was a singular moment in the show it came at the end of Kiss, a popular choice (judging by the number of fans yelling for him to play it) in the second of two encores. While the sizzling, tight band, led by sax-man Maceo Parker, played the song out, Prince stood alone at centrestage and danced in tight, almost serpentine fashion. This was no random burst of exuberant energy, no watch-what-I-can-do display of athleticism or choreography: rather, Prince never left the spot at centrestage, where he twisted and writhed in indisputably sensual fashion, as if he was briefly lost to us, alone in an ecstatic moment that we 10,000 were fortunate enough to witness. One female fan tweeted, “may panties just melted off.”

All of this is not to say the performance was perfect. As a fan who has long believed Prince is under-rated as a wickedly good guitar player, I would like to have seen him play it more. He strapped on his Fender Telecaster a couple of times — surely a high point in the show for all assembled was the guitar solo in Purple Rain, which I still vividly remember seeing and hearing for the first time on television almost 30 years ago — but there was too little of it.

The string of medleys also became frustrating by times, when he would toss out 10 or 20 seconds of a song — say, Darling Nikki or I Would Die 4 You or Hot Thing — and it would be over and onto something else before you had time to sing “masturbating with a magazine.” There was a sameness to these over-stuffed jams, and it was almost a relief when he focused on one song for a few moments. For me, almost all the high points came with songs we actually got to hear most of, such asRaspberry Beret or Purple Rain or Let’s Go Crazy (though it had a slice of Deliriousstuffed into its middle).

Another problem — and it has to be mentioned — was the absurd security clampdown on photos. To prohibit the media from taking photos is bad enough, but harassing fans is inexcusable. Security guards at the admission gates were loudly warning fans that no photos were allowed, even with cell phones, and that Prince might stop the show if he sees anyone take a photo. I laughed when I heard that, and the security guard who said it turned to me and with a hapless shrug (he doesn’t make the rules) said, “he’s done it before.” For a full half hour inside the venue, before the show started, the digital boards warned all not to take photos, and I saw tweets from people at the show who said security guards ordered them to stop tweeting and put away their cell phones, lest they take a photo. (Obviously some snuck through.) There’s no basis for a ban on photos, and it seems petty.

Those gripes aside, it was a tremendous performance, one in which the sometimes mercurial star shone bright and was clearly intent on giving his fans what they wanted. “You know how many hits I got?” he teased during the first encore. “We’ll be here until next week.” He kept rolling them out — 1999, When Doves Cry, Sign o’ the Times — giving the people what they wanted, encouraging them to sing along, at the end bringing them onstage to dance with him.

What an intimidating challenge that must have been. Prince, over two hours, had made it plain that he’s one of the truly great talents of his generation, part Michael Jackson, part James Brown, and all musicology. If you have the courage to get up in public next to that guy and dance, well, baby, u r a star 2.

amazing what a setlist full of songs from 25 years ago will make a reviewer gush with glee ..dig out the reveiws from ONA

Then don't go to any shows. Also, please zip it.

I'm tired of you "These shows suck! And I know because I read about them on the Internet!" people.

Honestly, just go away and find something else to do.

No offense.

Why are you tired?

Everybody have a right to express their feelings about their favorite performar.

And yes Prince is faking the funk these days.

I'm not physically tired - I just pressed 200 pounds on the tricep machine at the gym! My most ever. I feel GREAT!

But I am tired of the whining by people about the set lists. And it's whining by people who didn't even go to the concert! OMG, are you kidding?

Those people are entitled to their opinion, no matter how wrong it may be. Consider:

1. Prince has played a LOT of shows in the last five years that have contained almost NOTHING but deep tracks. The Nokia shows, the Ganesvoort show, the Montreaux shows, and several more have been laden with tracks that no one thought Prince would ever play again. All those shows are easily available on the internet.

2. Prince has already done the "If you came to get your Purple Rain on, you're in the wrong place" tour. It was called One Night Alone.

3. By my rough estimate, over the last five years, Prince has sold about 2,500,000 tickets to his shows. I've done a rough calculation based on the Liked It/Hated It matrix. Here it is:

Liked It = 2,499,995 ticket buyers

Hated It = 3 guys on Prince.org who didn't go to the show

And that's the end of that!

Those dudes should lobby for a "I HATE PRINCE CONCERTS THAT I DON'T GO TO!" sticky so all their bellyaching can be contained on one thread that I never have to ever read.

Well, I went to my first prince concert in Ottawa over the weekend. Let me just say, it was totally awesome. I sat in section 204 row A. The only real buzz kill for me was that this couple that was sitting behind me told me to sit down when I got up to dance because I was obstructing the view. Luckily, it only lasted a couple of minutes though because these two nice ladies traded seats with them and told me if I wanted to get up, then I can. I thanked them after the show. They said to me "you can't go to a prince concert and be expected to sit down the whole time."
I don't always listen to music. But when I do, I prefer Prince.

However I hope the mods take note of the suggestion to give those 3 guys their own sticky.

Impressive! If I did my math right, that's about 132 pounds!

If any of these whiners wanted, from the recent bootlegs that are available right now, they could make up a 50-song "concert" of Prince rarities.

I wish they would or, failing that, I wish there was a way I could block their whiny posts. The best solution, IMO, is for them to get a sticky. In fact, I will create it right now.

It will either get stickified, which solves the problem, or deleted.

As a relatively new Prince fan (7 years now or so) and this being my first Prince show, I was absolutely floored. The song selection was great, the energy was high and constant, and the crowd was appreciative and game. I was seated about 20-25 feet from the front of the stage and the musical energy was electric. I have absolutely no objective complaints other than the concert perhaps ran a lilttle short in comparison to some of the other Canadian tour running times I've heard about (the Ottawa show was 3hrs, I've heard some other shows were upwards of 4). Overall, just loud, funky and fantastic.

Though, I suppose to be a sonb I will offer some criticism. The sound mixing for the first bit was a bit muddled, though it was quickly levelled out. And although I'm technically 'new to the scene' (came on board during Musicology, and given I'm 25 now and that was 7 years ago, Prince wasn't exactly on the scene during my formative years), I do have all his stuff on cd and vinyl, and countless b-sides, bootlegs (both audio and video) etc etc so I'm WELL aware of what the man is capable of. With that in mind, it was slightly disappointing to see him run through just the hits without much variation on either their original arrangements, or how he's been playing them for the last 10 years. The only song I can think of that was significally altered was the new version of Little Red Corvette that he's been doing for the last couple years, and absolutely knocked out of the park at Montreux back in '09. Also there were no ballads that I can recall, with 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' and 'Purple Rain' being the 'mellowest' of the tracks performed. There was no solo piano session, instead he used his 'piano' to cue up a medley/mashup of tracks while he mimed and sang a bit. And, there was no musical experimentation or any covers or jams that could be outside the box.

That all being said, at the end of the day seeing him perform the hits was still mind blowing. It may not have been the concert I wanted, but it was the concert Ottawa deserved. Without polling everyone in the building, I'm pretty sure the hits is what they all came for, and by all accounts it's what this tour has been about. I don't know how or why he decides that some places deserve more experimental setlists but I am thankful that access to these shows is not impossible thanks to the internet, and that at the end of the day I was still able to see the greatest living musician absolutely kill 25+ years of hits with as much skill and charism as he's ever had.

Yeah, like he polled 2,499,995 people. rolleyes Just because they bought a ticket to it doesn't mean they necessarily "liked it". Hell, L4OA bought tickets, and he didn't care for it. So, your little numbers game is flawed.

get one thing straight, the likes of you don't hear what others have said saying that everyone has a right 2 comment on something whether good or bad. not one of the "whinners" u "kool aid drinkers" condemn has said that prince sucks overall, if u enjoy what he's doing there isn't a problem but if someone or multiple people do not feel the same way then u can't have it just your way. u don't wanna read certain people's post then don't. no harm no foul

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Impressive! If I did my math right, that's about 132 pounds!

I'm tired of whiny people complaining about setlists from shows they didn't go to. And I'm really tired of whiny people complaining that Prince never plays anything but his hits when clearly he plays back-catalogue stuff all the time.

Thank you! No one's forcing these people to read whatever it is they don't like reading. If you don't like it, skip over the fuckin' post! Plain and simple as that! Yet, these people don't want to hear it. All they want to see is people gushing over whatever show Prince does, and if you have anything else to say about it that's NOT gushing, you're a hater and shouldn't post. See, I know this is an int'l site, so maybe some people aren't hip to the 1st amendment. See, we have something in America called freedom of speech, where we can feel free to express ourselves without fear of persecution.

For those that are bitching about different views being said on here, maybe you should look into it.

concert reviews. how to get to shows. how to meet up with orgers. reports on the shows.

Freddie, tell me what part of that ^ you've participated in here?

All you've been is a complete DOWNER on these threads. You said you went to concerts and you bitched then.

fantastic. well done. All the power to you to REVIEW a concert you attended.

Tell me... do you enjoy wrecking these threads for concerts that you DID NOT have the chance to attend?

You certainly have the right to say the same thing you've been saying for years. We KNOW you hate the setlist. We get it.

arrow But how does it feel knowing that it has SUCKED the joy out of sharing these concerts between Canadians?

Many of whom like myself would stand in line to see that fucker sing scales BECAUSE WE'VE NOT HAD THE OPPORTUNITY to hear him before.

I'm glad you had the opportunity to go to your first Prince concert and had an awesome time! You're right when I went to the Welcome 2 America tour in NY the only time I sat down was during the piano segment. I danced almost the whole night! cool Haaaaa, I think I'm ready for another concert!!! so ready!!! cool

[Edited 12/5/11 10:20am]

And might I add, if you're at a rock concert (I use the term loosely) and you
don't like that people in front of you get up and dance, then either don't go to a rock concert, or sit in the front row.
I don't always listen to music. But when I do, I prefer Prince.

I wouldn't pay the complainers no mine because their opinions will never tarnish the reputation Prince has and will continue to have of putting on great concerts. The 2mil ticket holders may not have all been polled but it is common knowledge that Prince is one of the artist that does great live performances. The few people here who habitually complain will never change that, so party on!!!

How are these threads being "wrecked"?? Because an opinion differs from yours? And you and others are giving us a LOT of power to be allowing us to take away your excitement just because we don't all like the same things. I'm quite sure L4OA isn't sitting around thinking of ways to be evil and make others sad because of a friggin' Prince concert, and I know I'm not either.

If you let our opinions even remotely affect your love for Prince or his shows, then that says something about you, not us.

oh and just one thing i also wanna clear up, i still look at these concert threads 4 a hope that he's turned it around and i can then decide if I, not anyone else, but I could get excited 2 attend a future show. so if i read a negative review of a movie, i still would see it for myself 2 form my opinion only. and that's what i'm doing in these threads, not stopping ANYONE from going.

as 4 meeting up with other orgers b4 a show, during ,,there is a section called fan gatherings and it worked for a lot of us during the NYC shows.

Totally agree with your posts! Add to the shows the two Melkweg gigs from this year, where he played VERY rare songs!! Sure, it was not an official show, but to all who complain that Prince "fakes the funk" and what not, there is proof to the contrary, over and over again! Some people just love to hate him, it seems to me, and they will never ever be satisfied with anything he is doing!

Okay, I guess you might say that you had a hope of these shows being different when you bought the tickets, and then you just went back after the first show because you already had spent the money? - No offense, I am just honestly interested in what makes you go to shows if you don't like what Prince is currently offering?

And let me say something else: I really hope that Prince will do a tour in the future that you, and everyone else who has been less than satisfied with what he's been doing live, can enjoy! It would really be great to read some positive feedback from you guys for a change. You never know what Prince has planned, so maybe ... just maybe, there will be a reason for you to appreciate Prince's performances again! - I am curious to see what it would take, though, because some of you really seem rather difficult to please.

my first reason 4 going 2 the shows honestly was seeing the symbol stage in person. the reason i kept going back was in hopes that i would see the prince i grew up with, the pioneer that didn't give a damn and he showed up only once during the 4 concerts i went to and that was in january. after the 4th show i was happy that he did mountains cause back where it started for me seeing him live at the garden in 86, the show i saw then, he didn't do mountains so i finally got 2 hear that in person. another reason i kept on going was the tour book hinted that he would do the song "the love we make" but he didn't and i was pissed! lol

but after these shows i knew after that i will never pay for a arena show by prince ever again cause what i saw those nights wasn't someone who challenged u, it was a person "selling out" and not being free. I hope ur right that he will do a tour once again for his hardcore fans with a show less on hits and more on the deep cuts and newer material. for me it would be great in arena setting for prince 2 do his newer material more cause it can serve as marketing for him 2 say 2 his audience that he's still doing music and not being a vegas act which is what i see him doing.

thanks 4 asking tho

Yes, I think a lot of people feel the same way. When you look at the setlists there are very few songs from the mid '90s-present. He has released a ton of albums during that span and even if you just took the single "best" song per album that would nearly be enough for a show. The thing that excites me about that prospect is that we have seen that he can "rehabilitate" songs in the live setting and really make them shine. This is purely a matter of opinion but a song like "When I Lay My Hands On U" sounded so much better the way he did it at Montreux as opposed to the version that was released through the NPGMC. That was a song I never really payed much attention to until I heard the live version. How many other songs from the last fifteen years or so could he do something similar with?

I do understand when some fans complain about those of us that are dissatisfied but part of the reason that some of us complain is because we believe he can do something new and different rather than just going out there and churning out the hits again. Hits based tours certainly serve their purpose and they can be very enjoyable but it would be great to hear him try something different for a change of pace. Ideally it would be wonderful if he could alternate. Maybe one year go out and focus on pleasing the casual fans with the hits and the next year do a smaller tour that would focus on pleasing the diehards.

Thank you for your reply and taking the time to share your point of view, which makes it more understandable for me than if I just read these posts about "stupid setlists" and stuff like that.

I get what your hopes are in regards to Prince's concerts, and a part of me even agrees with you.

Yes, I would also love to see Prince play more of his newer songs, because I like many of them and it would be great to hear them live. But I understand why he does not play them in these big arena shows where he is entertaining 10,000 people and more. He likes fans to participate, he likes them to enjoy themselves, and I guess for him that means that they make noise and sing along and clap and dance. - But most people don't do that when they don't know the songs! They cheer when they hear familiar songs - the hits! And for that reason I find it very understandable why he plays the kind of shows he has been doing for a while now. For the entertainer Prince it can't be fun if he is on stage and the crowd does not seem to acknowledge the songs he sings.

On the other hand, there is the musician Prince who clearly enjoys playing the rare gems - and he does that once in a while, as has been mentioned. The latest bigger concert he did that was really extraordinary (which I was lucky to witness) was the second concert of the NSJ Festival in July in Rotterdam, where I could not believe him singing "Joy in Repetition", "Colonized Mind", "Mr. Man", "The Love We Make", along with such old rockers like "Bambi". That was definitely pure music, no Vegas show, as you say!! So he IS doing those kind of shows, too, just not in the regular arena settings, I guess.

And I am with you in hoping for a future tour where he does play more of those shows, focusing on newer material and rare jewels of his old material. But in the meantime, I am one fan who does appreciate what he is doing now ... for the simple reason that I am happy he is touring at all. It could be different, you know, and then it would not matter what we like him to play, we would just wish him to perform at all. At least some of us. wink
