SAME DAY PASSPORT SERVICES: Follow these instructions:

1 Call to make a same-day appointment with the Passport Acceptance Facility in your town or city if you are a first-time applicant. Most U.S. Post Office locations and courthouses can serve as acceptance facilities. Check the acceptance facility finder located in the Resources to find your nearest one. If you live in a major city you may be able to go directly to a Passport Issuing Agency, the government facility responsible for issuing your passport. The locations are also listed in the Resources.

2 Fill out two copies of the application form on the U.S. State Department's passport website. First-time applicants fill out form DS-11 and renewal applicants fill out DS-82.

3 Take two passport-sized photos that conform to the standards required by the State Department.

4 Make two copies of your itinerary to prove that you're traveling immediately and require this kind of expedited service.

5 Gather documents to prove your identity. If you're renewing your passport, then your expired passport will suffice; if you're applying for a new passport you'll need a government-issued photo ID and proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization card.

6 Write checks for the appropriate fees. The passport fee requires a check to the U.S. Department of State for the current new passport or renewal passport fee. You'll also need to pay an execution fee to the passport acceptance facility or issuing agency.

7 Find a passport expediting service online that can deliver your passport on the same day, if you don't live close enough to a passport issuing agency and can personally travel there. TravelVisaPro.com offers emergency eight hour same-day service for applications received by 8:30 a.m. ItsEasyPassport.com and ExpressPassport.com also offer 24-hour service. If you're not using an expediter, skip to Step 11.

8 Print and sign two copies of the Letter of Authorization provided by the expediter. This letter, when signed at the acceptance facility, will allow the expediter to take the sealed envelope with your application to the issuing agency in your place.

9 Include a self-addressed and paid for return envelope for the expediter to return your passport in. Pay the expediter's fee.

10 Go to your appointment at the acceptance facility or issuing agency with all of your documents in tow. At an acceptance facility, the agent will counter-sign your letter of authorization and your passport photos as well as check your IDs before sealing your information in an official envelope, which you'll send to the expediter. If you're at a regional issuing agency, you can leave your materials there and wait to be called back to receive your passport

11 Seal your official envelope in another envelope that you can speedily mail to the expediter. In order to get same-day service, send the envelope overnight so it will arrive in the early morning hours.

U.S. Passport Card

NOTE:

The U.S. Passport Card can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry and is more convenient and less expensive than a passport book. The passport card cannot be used for international travel by air. You will need a passport to travel by air.

See Application Processing Times. The processing time for the passport card is the same as for the passport book.

HOW TO APPLY

All U.S. citizens may apply for a passport card.

If you have a U.S. passport book and are eligible to use Form DS-82, you may apply for the card by mail. You can use Form DS-82 to renew your passport book at the same time that your apply for your passport card.

If you have never had a U.S. passport book or are not eligible to use Form DS-82, you must apply in person using Form DS-11.

All passport cards will be returned using First Class Mail. Passport cards cannot be shipped to you using overnight delivery.

SECURITY

To increase speed, efficiency, and security at U.S. land and sea border crossings, the passport card contains a vicinity-read radio frequency identification (RFID) chip. There is no personal information written to the RFID chip. This chip points to a stored record in secure government databases.

With RFID technology, Customs and Border Protection inspectors will be able to access photographs and other biographical information stored in secure government databases as the traveler approaches an inspection station.

The passport card uses state-of-the-art security features to prevent against the possibility of counterfeiting and forgery. A protective RFID-blocking sleeve is provided with each passport card to protect against unauthorized reading or tracking of the card when it is not in use.

HISTORY

We began production of the U.S. Passport Card on July 14, 2008. As of March 2010, more than 2,700,000 Passport Cards have been issued to U.S. citizens.

Passport Photo Requirements

Your photo is a vital part of your passport application. To learn more, review the information below on how to provide a suitable photo to avoid passport processing delays. The acceptance of your photo is always at the discretion of the U.S. passport agency.

We recommend you use a professional passport photo service to ensure your photo meets all the requirements.

If you are applying for a U.S. Passport, you must provide one (1) photo. Your passport photo must be:

• In color
• Printed on photo quality paper
• 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) in size
• Sized such that the head is between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (between 25 and 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. View the Photo Composition Template for more size requirement details.
• Taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance
• Taken in front of a plain white or off-white background
• Taken in full-face view directly facing the camera
• With a neutral facial expression and both eyes open
• Taken in clothing that you normally wear on a daily basis:
  • Uniforms should not be worn in your photo, except religious clothing that is worn daily.
  • Do not wear a hat or head covering that obscures the hair or hairline, unless worn daily for a religious purpose. Your full face must be visible, and the head covering must not cast any shadows on your face.
  • Headphones, wireless hands-free devices or similar items are not acceptable in your photo.
  • If you normally wear prescription glasses, a hearing device or similar articles, they may be worn for your photo.
  • Dark glasses or non-prescription glasses with tinted lenses are not acceptable unless you need them for medical reasons (a medical certificate may be required)
  • Glare on glasses is not acceptable in your photo. Glare can be avoided with a slight downward tilt of the glasses or by removing the glasses or by turning off the camera flash.

Review the Photo Examples to see examples of acceptable and unacceptable photos. Photos copied or digitally scanned from driver’s licenses or other official documents are not acceptable. In addition, snapshots, magazine photos, low quality vending machine or mobile phone photos, and full-length photographs are not acceptable.

Want to take the photo yourself?

While we recommend you use a professional passport photo service to ensure your photo meets all the requirements, you may take the photo yourself. Hand-held self portraits are not acceptable. Photos must not be digitally enhanced or altered to change your appearance in any way. Use the Department of State’s free photo tool to:

select a digital image stored on your computer resize and rotate it if necessary crop it to a square image of exactly 600 x 600 pixels, and save it to your computer for printing This tool requires Adobe Flash Player 10 or later.

Taking photos of Your passport may not be accepted at the border if your appearance has changed significantly or if you cannot be identified from the photo in your current passport.

If you cannot be identified from your current passport photo, you should apply for a new passport, even if your old one has not yet expired (appropriate fees required).

You may have to apply for a new passport if, from the time of your last passport photo, you have:

• Undergone significant facial surgery or trauma
• Added or removed numerous/large facial piercings or tattoos
• Undergone a significant amount of weight loss or gain
• Obtained a new gender identity

If you feel that you can still be identified from the photo in your current passport, you do not need to apply for a new passport. For example, growing a beard or coloring your hair would not constitute a significant change.

If the appearance of your child under the age of 16 has changed due to the normal aging process, you do not need to apply for a new passport for him or her.

Thanks luv4u for making this thread a sticky. I think this info will be easy and quick access for U.S. citizens planning to attend the first round of Canada shows in mid-to late November, and need a passport right away. For those who can't afford a regular U.S. Passport, they can apply for a passport card, since it is less expensive. Passport cards cannot be used for international air travel;can only be used for border crossings/port-of-sea entry.

If the latter is the case, they need to get that application process started right away, and follow the "How to Apply" directions in this thread, because 'expedite' service for a passport card, takes 2-3 weeks- by mail, and can't be shpped through overnight delivery, like an expedited passport can. According to the rules, U.S. Passport cards are shipped by First Class Mail service only. Hope this info is helpful.

It must be the fact that in europe countries are a lot smaller, so yo bump into borders very easily.

Well there's a lot of Americans travelling to the shows, and they don't have passports or passport cards, so it's not really a surprise that many don't have one. I don't have one, because all the places I've travelled to, even outside the U.S. only required a birth certificate. I'm working on finally obtaining my passport and a passport card before the end of the year, especially since things have changed since 9/11. So anyway, I thought it would be nice to post this info for easy access, and the first shows are in less than 3 weeks. In the U.S. you can get a passport in one day, if you have the extra money to pay, and the time to stand on long lines, and it's not cheap for same-day service. Usually if you live in a large city, you can get a passport in one day. For those who can't afford to pay the same-day fees, they'll have to go through regular or other expedited services for a passport, which may/can take between 2 to 3 weeks for delivery;or they can choose to get a passport card which is much cheaper and last a number of years, but passport cards can't be used for air travel, only for border crossings or sea ports of entry. Hope this info helps.

since 911. You need a passport, even for domestic flights.

I hold a British passport, though I'm a US res', it expires in March. I'm praying I don't need six months on it, to be allowed in. I'm told getting back to NY will be this issue. I figured that's not so bad. I'll take my chances

I'm assuming you mean for domestic flights in Canada, because you don't need a passport for domestic flights in the U.S. only for international travel. I would call the Passport agency in your area, just to make sure you don't need to renew your passport, because you don't want to get stuck without the proper or updated documentation.

I can see all the work with all the copying and pasting you have done for it. my post is a view from someone thats been to USA/Canada(before 911) and is not even from that side of the world and knows, and from Prince fan thats visited this site for years.

I usually dont complain about stuff like this because I really dont care for online people I dont know and don't care what they post or do and I know theres all sorts of people online from the mentally slow to the highly intelligent posters, I see that. I come here for Prince info but all the time I've constantly got to searching through a load of shit just to get to proper threads that should be stickys (ie MJ/Conrad threads) and popular threads on Prince news. Its really got messy here and the site has been like this for months and months if not a few years and is not getting any better with the lack Ben and mods around.

Just had to voice my opinion on this, well someones gotta coz we can all see it. This place needs lots of new mods. Don't take it personally its just your sticky was a typical example of how the org is like these days.

If you are US LPR, you need your I-551 to get back to the US. If you are a UK citizen, you can enter on the visa waiver program. You will be admitted for 90 days. The UK is part of the 6 month club so you do need 6 month validity, just your 90 days. Also, make sure you have ESTA if you are entering on the UK passport. Google ESTA for all the details.

If you are US LPR, you need your I-551 to get back to the US. If you are a UK citizen, you can enter on the visa waiver program. You will be admitted for 90 days. The UK is part of the 6 month club so you do need 6 month validity, just your 90 days. Also, make sure you have ESTA if you are entering on the UK passport. Google ESTA for all the details.

I don't have experience traveling to Canada but coming in to the US from abroad as a non US -citizen is a time consuming business (we are talking of the possibility hours of waiting in line here). So if you plan to take this route, be sure to have enough time before your connection.
