I did my classic o2 PR moment at the HopFarm last Sunday, I went to the loo, but that was a brilliant moment, as I walked back from behind the crowd, I was able to take in everything for a brief moment, before I tried to concentrate on finding my way back

If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Prince showed us what he's made of: FUNK!

It was amazing. I love Joy in repetition and him opening with that beautiful song was mindblowing. Had the whole audiance captured and in awe. He sure loved us, however not as much as he loved his guitar. He truly went loose and played and cherished his guitar, getting sounds and tunes out of the instrument that were from outerspace.

Unfortunately, I stood near a tall guy with a huge camera+lens. Prince shyed away from him (and all his innocent fans near that evil guy), so I didn't get to see much of his guitar play or performance up close. I enjoyed seeing what he did with the back of his guitar.....

And as soon as he did go near our area, everybody got their camera out, so he left that side of the stage to themselves. WHAT PART OF NO CAMERA'S DO YOU PEOPLE NOT UNDERSTAND?

Please, for those people obsessed with recording a concert on your camera, why don't you just buy a DVD, go and see that at home? leave the people who like to see a concert and be present at the concert enjoy the experience. I get fed up standing behind somebody who is having their camera in the air, blocking the view for people behind. If you really need proove that you have been at a Prince concert, buy a poster. mad mad mad mad

Back to concert:

It was mindblowing! The purple hippies around me were so happy not to hear something about rain, snow, looks, kisses or red cars. The rest of the audiance was impressed and blown away by his guitar skills and the way he truly showed us he actually is a great musician. After the concert, in line for a taxi, I heard there were a lot of people who didn't know most songs he did, however, they got inspired to listen to his music beyond the songs about the weather, what year it is, what hat to wear or what car he likes.

And he was nailing it. I remember a few weeks ago I cried listening to 'the love we make' and

how I couldn't get 'joy in repitition' out of my head wink The setlist yesterday made me sooo happy.

Prince showed his Dutch fans that he does respect them, and doesn't take them for granted. When he asked if we were allright, I felt he was genuine. Actually, everything he did yesterday felt as if he was genuine and he valued his audiance. He didn't do his theatrical tricks and teasing bits that he knows that work every time. He didn't rely on any of those things, just to get the audiance clapping and involved. He showed us what he is good at, concentrated on making music in stead of a theatrical show and had the audiance captured with that.

Shelby also showed us why she is in the band. Prince and Shelby were amazing together on the Jackson cover 'I want you back'. I love her. She owns her place in the band. And she is very good at paying attention to the audiance when that is needed. She is not all about herself. She was challenged yesterday and delivered. She and Prince working together at a song, is just awesome! I respect her a lot.

Andy has great and enigmatic stage presence. The audiance loved her voice and reacted strongly to her. I'm still a fan of her, I truly think she has star potential. Note the emphasis on potential.

She is a talent, however, not a musician in the league of Esperanza Spalding, Janelle Monae, Joss Stone, Eryka Badu. Nor is she an independent, disciplined, hard working woman like Misty. She is the girlfriend of the boss, and therefore she is on stage. I hope that Prince and Shelby will coach her well. It's her first big audiance tour and she needs to learn to play the guitar now. It's not child play anymore. She also needs to realize she is on stage with Prince and he has a name and standard to live up to. The audiance is there for quality, not for childplay.

Her influence and addition is of good value for the band and the show. It's great she gets so much stage time. However, months ago, I fel for her fresh, innocent, youthfull, careless, spontaneous smile. There is a thin line between that kind of smile and a fake, self-indulgent, presumptuous and opportunistic smile as soon as the camera is around. I hope Shelby and Prince can teach her about containing her ego and stay genuine. She is young and is on top of the mountain now, however, when she doesn't do the hard work to deliver quality, a very steep, deep and painfull ride into the valley might wait for her. I hope she will not let that happen and will proove that she actually is a good musician and not just the boss his newest misstress. We know how most of his mistresses end up.....

So, Andy, get your act together and play the guitar a few hours a day. Practice, practice, practice! Play the guitar until your thumb and fingers are blue and bleeding (not literally). You'r on stage with Prince, not sitting around the camp fire anymore wink

And I love how Renata (right spelling?) is a steady, solid rock on stage. She plays the guitar well, loves making music, is not eager for audiance attention. Her calm, steady and quality play makes a solid base for the band to perform and show of. All props for her!

I apreciate Prince really pulling it off yesterday. People who want to hear his hits, can buy his 'The hits I and The hits II' cd. Watch Purple rain again, when that is your favorite song. Watch all his dvd's while he performs his hits. However, please, Prince is not a clown who has to do the same trick over and over. He is a well respected and legendary musician, valued around the world. Yesterday he was that class musician. Showing us his love for his guitar and music. He used his voice as an instrument, there is nobody who can pull that off the way he does. I hope tonight he will respect his fans and audiance and plays music. There is no need to manage the audiance, just play and the audiance will follow.

About the festival:

It's great. The atmosphere is awesome. There are a lot of parents with their teenage kids enjoying music. There are a lot of foreigners, international musicians who come here for the good atmosphere. Yesterday I met this really nice German saxophone player. He just finished music school and wants to go to a Dutch master in sax (conservatorium of Hoge School in Rotterdam). I saw a few gigs together with him and everything we saw was just great. And I love being on my own on this festival, because I'm meeting so many people, true music lovers and true purple hippies. I never want to go to a festival with others anymore, I just go to a stage where I want to go, drink or eat when I want to, don't have to negociate anything. Love that.

I only had 3 hours of sleep, got home at 8 in the morning and woke up three hours later, at 11. I tried to find the boogie ball yesterday, however, was not lucky at all. Strolled through Rotterdam on my own, phone broke down, and in the end I just took the train back to Amsterdam at 6 in the morning. sad

After I posted this way to long text I will get ready to go back to Rotterdam, because I don't want to miss anything of Jan Akkerman. I missed out on Kyteman on friday and saturday, maybe I can finally see a little of his mindblowing genuis work at the start of the last day cool

I might want to go and see Snoop. However, he 3 years ago I got a ticket to see him in the Melkweg. Which is a good, small venue in the centre of Amsterdam. I got in early for a good spot. Then he arrive 1,5 hour (!!!!!!!!!!!!!) late. He was too stoned to perform and needed a chair to stay erect. Willy Nelson came in for a guest appearance, and he was actually the highlight of the evening. Snoop was okay at Lowlands, however, I do hope he realizes that he's performing for a music lovers today. He performs late, so I see a big risk of him being too stoned to give us his best musical side. Well, when he is able to leave the weed for after the concert, he might just show us where he is good at: improvising his lyrics and his good sense of humour.

I'm in a purple high at the moment, I do hope I can last till the end tonight. I haven't had that much sleep the last couple of days, eating is interfering with the concerts, so I only took some time to eat in the train to Rotterdam eek . My ears are beeping, because somehow the right side of the stage is my favorite spot (the speakers on that side have not survived Prince's fridaynight. Yesterday there were some awefull noises while P was doing his guitar, sound guy has to get his act together, I don't want to end up deaf)

I will stick to the right side of the stage, near the piano. I still hope for some piano songs, and secretly I wish for Prince to do "Solo". For me that is a pure balad and although probably not how is feeling right now, it still is a jawdropping song.

As for his hits: "Cinamon girl", "Play in the sunshine", "boys and girls", "Christopher Tracy's parade", "cream", "diamonds and pearls", I mean, if he is in need for a crowd pleaser, he truly can go beyond wheather casting, cars, hats and looks wink

[Edited 7/10/11 5:23am]

This one is for you D33....don't tell me or other people what to do...you are NOT god!!! If I want to hear Purple Rain or Hits, I'm entitled to. You don't have to tell me that I have to buy the DVD or Greatest Hits.

I have just seen the clip with Seal on youtube, falloff , love how Prince says "thank you brother, first verse, lets go" classic Prince humour...

Btw, there seems to be no problems with the sound judging by this clip, sounds really rich and I can hear all the instruments considering it is from someone recording in the crowd.

I was in front, on the left side of the stage and everything seemed okay. Was it perfect? No, but where I was standing it definitely wasn't too loud. I've never been to a Prince show where he didn't tell the soundman to turn this or that up/down, so that's not really an issue as far as I'm concerned. Maybe the sound was too loud in some other spots, but I have no complaints about it.

Isn't the current arrangement quite true to the studie version? What in your opinion are the important differences that turn the song from "gold" to "sucks?

No, they aren't. Listen to the original and get back to me. The original doesn't try too hard and is very sparse and tasteful. The live version is totally cheesy and over the top (for me). At least he doesn't do the piano intro that he'd been doing for way too long.

Another thing: the way Prince sings Purple Rain is totally bland and lacks any of the emotion the original had.

Just my opinion.

(This song sounded good at The Brits and 07/07/07. I'm not one of those Wendy supporters that are all over the board, but I calls 'em like I see 'em. I may be biased since I was there for the 07/07/07 performance.)

I think you're talking about the delivery rather than the arrangements. There's a more prominent rhythm guitar on the original version and the version played on the Brits (naturally since those versions actually feature a second guitar player), but that's about the only difference I hear in the arrangements.

As to taste and emotions - different people hear different things. You being there for the 07/07/07 show obviously influence your evaluation to some degree, as you point out yourself.

I too like the Brit-version, though. Haven't heard the 07/07/07 version.

No one should be making assumptions of who Prince is involved with. She is not his girlfriend. Just because he appears to be helping in a business manner a much junior musician does not mean they are his girlfriend. I would like to point out that sometimes a person he is mentoring tries to imply it is more or misinterprets his intentions.

Okay and how do you know she is not his gf? From what I've seen last night it really looks like there's something more than just friendship or whatever. I'm not saying they are a couple, but I'm also not saying they are not since I don't have that kind of inside info. Do you?

tell that to DennisMark and the others who are already living vicariously through both of them with the little romance movie they've created in their heads based on what they see on stage lol

Do you?

JiwiiCoCo:

I know for a fact she is not his girlfriend and yes I do have accurate information. Prince is a private person regarding who he is in love with and it is between him and the woman that loves him. People who have only business contact with him sometimes try to make false public impressions and he is not public about the woman he truly loves. So do not assume people he is seen with in public are involved with Prince actually the opposite.

Yes!!! That's what I'm talking about. Stop playing "Purple Rain", 'Kiss" etc...And play some random ass rock jams.

Wow!!! I really love that setlist.

[Edited 7/9/11 22:13pm]

no i wasn't there but just seeing that setlist is what i'm talking about ..there is a prince after and before purple rain and kiss!

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

And I love how Renata (right spelling?) is a steady, solid rock on stage. She plays the guitar well, loves making music, is not eager for audiance attention. Her calm, steady and quality play makes a solid base for the band to perform and show of. All props for her!

I just org googled your name. rolleyes you only appear once in a while to tell everyone that none of the women he has been seen with recently including misty, or andy allo are his girlfriends.

You know what? I say Prince got too many bitches and all of them are senseless when it comes to the man. They all think they are his "secret" and they all think he has only one secret. Shame. Prince make these chicks psycho. You coming here to try to validate this secret relationship is really only a validation of your insecurity with the relationship you are trying to tell everyone about passively. People named off a few of these new girls and i wonder if you are one of them or perhaps Bria, depending on your sign up date and your previous postings but I didnt bother looking that far. All Im saying, you chicks should get a clue. he dont care about none of yall!

Wow! Wish I could have seen this show. Nice set list. Andy is fine, I like her there. Lol. ok sorry that was corny. Whats this drawing I hear of? Are there any photos? I also like the way Prince has been dressing her.

The setlist says it all, a lot of strong non hits for real music lovers or die-hard fans.

Colonized mind

I like it there

Bambi

Guitar

Prince guitar playing was extremely hot on these songs.

Mountains fully sung also by Prince and full version.

Alphabet Street was funky and speedy, loved it.

Dear Mr Man on bass !!!

Who ever thought he would play When we're dancing close and slow, a ultimate surprise and beautifull played. Joy in repetition, the love we make, man did i mention every song now of being great.

Oh no, Andy Allo was terrible, sang out of key, played guitar very bad,

So The look of love and other stuff she sang wasn't good as far as i'm concerned.

She can't draw either hahaha, my daughter of 4 makes better drawings, I probably don't get the meaning of that. Maybe that's the art part for the coming art festival in Denmark.

Ï'm off to sleep. Going back tomorrow. Only thing left for Prince to spoil us with is a long solo piano set.

This one is for you D33....don't tell me or other people what to do...you are NOT god!!! If I want to hear Purple Rain or Hits, I'm entitled to. You don't have to tell me that I have to buy the DVD or Greatest Hits.

Honey I know, I know, I know times are changing
It's time we all reach out 4 something new
That means u 2
U say u want a leader
But u can't seem 2 make up your mind
I think u better close it
And let me guide u 2 the purple rain

I hope he plays Purple Rain tonight, just to upset you!!!!

I guess I was born that way cool

Hope you had a great time at the concert and weren't upset about me having a good time. I hope you didn't spend too much energy in wishing me a bad evening, that would have been such a shame of your time and effort.

It was AMAZING!!!!!!

All these songs that I wanted 2 hear! It was like he was thinking about me and my friend. No kidding..

I can't describe how amazing it was. He was pretty sensual in some songs 2. I haven't seen him that sensual in years.. I think he is really in love with Andy Allo... the way they did...

It was just so amazing, and special. I was in the front row of the mic were Prince was in the entire night. It was amazing 2 see every little detail. cool It was not my first concert in the front row, but still on this night it was more special than normally.

I also got the setlist from saturday, as you can see not all the songs are on the setlist;

I have 2 write something on the other threads 2 .. been 2 all 3 nights. I'm tired now, but it was all worth it!

I love U Prince !

I can't wait 4 luxembourg..

And apology for the rest of the band that I didn't thank.

Me too, the show was really perfect! The best show I've seen after Viage2 without a doubt!

And Andy Allo is def. his girlfriend. They were constantly flirting at the side of the stage when another musician was giving a solo or in the spotlight. When P or Andy didn't have to play, they directly went to each other 2 talk, laught or flirt. It was really beautiful 2 c!
