This was without a doubt the worse Prince gig ive been to. Firsty, the sound was terrible, everything was just to loud so the instruments were all blurred into each other. At the beg you couldn't hear princes solo, even when he increased the volume. Andy alo was out of key and synch on more than one occasion and even prince faltered. The show was schizophrenic, it couldn't decide what it wanted to be: aftershow or greatest hits and neither part was inspiring. There were moments; Prince on bass being one. But I found myself being bored and wishing it would end. I am not going to queue up so early tonite. As being @ front wasn't worth it. Shelbeys version of misty blue was very bad. I love big singers, but i just dont get it, why does prince think she's good. He has said that he listens back over the recordings, is he deaf? Shelbey wasnt the worse though, liv sang out of key and i found myself cringing and making that funny look when the you know something aint quite right, i was comforted when they guy next to me noded in agreement. Both liv and shelbey git boed by ppl around me. Also, maybe your allowed here, but everyone was smokin and it really made me feel I'll. As smokers normally do they hold their fags far away from them, or more precisely in someone else face. If they are going to smoke they should be legally made to hold it under their nose and see how everyone else feels; that or where fish balls on their heads. I'm not gonna point out my feelings about the show but I thought it was very disappointing. Hope it gets better tonight (read: lower sound volume, better mix, better setlist, no Larry, less covers)
Please wear EARPLUGS! Buy them for tonight of you can at the Hubo, DA (drug store), and possibly your opticien or local Praxis. Have a look at 'The W2A: Euro Tour Song Survey' http://prince.org/msg/12/362417

Yes, less hits, that's great, but something wasn't there. This night did not touch the spot that Gent did. [Edited 7/9/11 3:00am] Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Seems like people didn´t like the setlist and the vibe of the show....but what exactly was the reason for the bad vibe? And what did you find "strange" about the setlist? I mean, it´s pretty much the same setlist he´s been doing since forever. Then again, after the Hop Farm and Belgium shows, I would have expected a fresher setlist, too.
Why was the vibe bad? Because of the sound, the setlist, or Larry? The only time I wasn´t fully happy with a Prince show was in 1998 in Cologne. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

A quarter of the people had left before the end of the concert. Sound was way to loud and I understand people for walking away and saving their hearing. Have a look at 'The W2A: Euro Tour Song Survey' http://prince.org/msg/12/362417

And this in Rotterdam, of all places? His concerts in the Netherlands always used to be very special in the past. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Terrible means literally 'terrible', completely unprofessional. When you cannot decipher instruments clearly, when the guitar is uber low in the mix, when the vocals make your ears bleed - i.e. way too bright, when the soundstage sounds muffled, when morris hayes' keys start clipping, etc etc..... When your ears hurt during the show, and when you wake up in the morning after the show and your ears are ringing - that's called bad sound.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
You are not alone, I felt the same way. There are plenty of others as well.
For an up-coming artist it could be understandable but for Prince? Totally unprofessional, hope for massive improvements in the sound and the live mix for the next 2 nights.

This is a jazz festival, the audience is more diverse as with a regular show, where everybody is there for Prince. I guess a lot of NorthSeaJazz day-visitors took the advantage of seeing Prince, that's also why audience is leaving during a concert. I can imagine if you we're there to check out Prince as a festivalvisitor it could have been disappointing enough to leave.
I walked out after the first 3 songs of Esperanze Spalding, where her fans could blaim me for leaving.

Prince played from 1.40 until curfew time (4.00 am), after watching concerts of Janelle Monae and Larry backstage. No additional barriers / gold circle and no seats at all on the floor (arena, usually there are non allocated seats at the back of the arena in this hall). Stage was moved more up front in the arena almost to the middle. I did enjoy the set list. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea from Prince and Andy to skip the sound check on Thursday after all but from where I was standing it was not as bad as I’ve read, bass and bass drum where a mess. Maybe it was my ears where ruined already by the earlier concerts in the hall, Janelle Monae was way too loud. During the concert (3.45 am) the organizers sent this mail, probably the queuing was not perfect as well:

Also, it was almost 4 in the morning, and some people (including myself) had already been at the venue for about 12 hours, listening to different kinds of music.

Agree with Sander250 and RealMusician. Added to it: at every concert about 10% of the people leave early to skip the traffic right after the show. I was in the back of the arena, and saw after Only Heaven Knows (which to me is just a re-do of Johnny) lots of people leaving. Prior to that not many people left. That the room was empty real soon after Kiss could be expected: it was 4 am and everyone knows that is the curfew for NSJ. [Edited 7/9/11 5:15am]

Reposting the message I left @ Moquake: I must say I disagree with the negative sentiments here. The sound was loud and need some tweaking at the start of Controversy, but it was not excessive (I did not use my earplugs) and I could hear the instruments clearly. It was definitely a weird setlist with so many covers, but it once again shows how unpredictable Prince is and that's great, IMO. I had brought some friends who were first timers and they absolutely loved the funk vibe during the entire show. The main set was really funky and danceable, and Maceo was great. I am not a big Larry G fan but Everyday People was just slamming, I thought. And then to close off with 3 hits was perfect.

Agree - "lower sound volume, better mix, better setlist, no Larry, less covers", and less hits and more improvised-jazz-fussion-things! Prince, please, you now got a forum at a mature jazz festival where you dont need to play Purple Rain..., so why play it safe?!? The audience is expeting a masterclass in music by the best on, no Le Freak, Flay that funky... Well, lets hope for tonight. He still have a chance to make this a legendary festival, but thing gotta change. Peace!

To the section: absolutely! To the other part of your post: Agree! It was a funk masterclass that only Prince can do. I've seen Prince many times in concert at an aftershow and I have learned that the best way of enjoying a night with Prince (outside the regular shows of a tour) is to go there without any expectation about what genre of music or songs he will perform and just go with the flow.Try it, and you will have a blast! I had one last night and I am still on a high because of it! Last night - despite the bad sound - it was a wonderful hardcore funk flow! But, sometimes I think many 'hardcore' fans of Prince are not into his funk and that 2 hours of ballads and poppy guitar songs would please them more. And me less - LOL. But... different strokes to different folks!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
you're right - last night it had the vibe of Johnny to me. The songs share s similar laid-backness.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Thank you, my sentiments exactly. I used to be disappointed in the past when he did not play the songs that I was hoping for, even though I had a great time. So at some point I did exactly what you describe: leave any expectations at home and just enjoy the show. And that works for me. Would I have liked other songs yesterday: YES. Have I been at better Prince concerts: YES (but also to many that were worse than yesterday evening). In my mind the key questions are: did I have a good time and will I go again (and again), and the answer to that most definitely is also: YES.
Because of vacation I will not be able to attend the other Rotterdam shows, but to all of those who are going: have a fabulous time!

The sound sucked, too much high, but the show wasn't bad. It did seem to miss "a vibe", that I felt during the Gelredome show last fall, but all in all this wasn't a bad show. Long jams, no hits, that could do it for me. Prince seemed to have fun on stage. Maybe next time he could attend the soundcheck so he wouldn't have to spend the first 5 minutes of Controversy to correct the sound to his wishes.

Fun to read so many completely different reports, makes you start to doubt yourself..just as I was wondering if I didn't see too many shows these last months and therefor getting a bit numb I now feel it as a bit of a relieve I can honestly say out loud I didn't like last nights show. Prince is a pro, as usual, no comments there. He actually had fun, was laughing etc. But because of the crappy sound, to many covers/intermezzo's and awfull black-lighting (got me a epileptic attack almost) I couldn't get into it. Was it a more raw afterparty or a funky show, neither of them. Confusion...but then hey, that's what he does, creating confusion. I get the idea of how he wanted it to be, sure it would be crazy not to have Janelle, Larry and Maceo up there, those are his muscial friends. This wasn't a hits show, this was a cover show. And Antwerp being a relative large hits show was way better. So it's not just about what songs he performs, last night just didn't turn out to what it could have been...for me..and some, and some not Out of 3 shows in London i saw, 1 bad, 1 fairly ok and one mindblowing. Almost same setlist...it's just chemistry. Wasn't there last night. Tonight let's hope for it!
