21 Nights in LA - Got real old REAL fast An Open Letter to Prince:
Dear Sir,
I have been a fan of yours since 1981 when a friend let me borrow the Controversy cassette tape. Even though I was 9 years old and my parents wouldn't let me listen to it, I somehow sneaked it into the house and put in whatever tape deck I could find and listen to that great music for hours. It was at that point you had me hooked. And, subsequently, I have been an arden supporter of yours by buying every album you have ever produced, defending you to so many people when you went through you name change and lack of commercial success as well as buying your concert tickets whenver you would tour or come to the area in which I have lived. In short, I have chosen to support all of your ventures and believe in your musical prowess and genius.
When I heard you were coming to LA for 21 Night I was excited to have the opportunity to see the greatest living musician; an icon. Never before had I been given an opportunity to see your talents in a smaller venue for such a long period of time. So, when tickets went on sale I made it a point to snatch up as many as I could afford and see as mnay shows as possible with the hopes of hearing some of greatest music that was an intregal part of my life. But, as I went to show after show at The Forum or Troubadour I became incressingly frustrated at the reality of hearing the same songs over and over and over again. Herein lies my issue with these concerts...
For once, I would like to see a real concert for REAL fans. Why can't you provide a concert for the people who have folowed you for (now) 30 years. I don't know how many times I have heard 1999, Little Red Corvette, Kiss, Alphabet Street, Take Me With U, Shhh, Let's Go Crazy and Purple Rain. Why do you have to make a concert for the "Radio" fans and not for the REAL fans. I know I cannot be alone in thinking this way. Why can't you perform a set that rewards the loyal, loyal followers who have helped to share the word about your music and performances with a concert that showcases your incredible catalog. For once, I would love to see a concert where you perform for the REAL fans with such greats as Thunder, Party Up, Condition of the Heart, America, Private Joy, Dorothy Parker, Eye Know, Partyman, 17 Days, Let's Pretend We're Married, and ANYTHING off the Gold Experience (minus Endorphine Machine or Shhh). This is not a wish list but an attempt to hear something... anything different.
I seems like the last 10 years of touring have been a "greatest hits' show and I would hope you would consider performing the songs that have made you great to the real fans. Your music is so much more than just "The Hits." And, if you can change the lyrics around to DMSR to fit your new beliefs then why can't you do that for other songs. And, more importantly, if you new beliefs prevent you from playing Darling Nikki then why in the hell would you even perform it (or just a snipet of it) in concert. C'mon, man. Now don't get me wrong. I am appreicative of every show you perform and loved every minute of it, however, I started getting disappointed when I kept hearing the same songs, anecdotes, and words to the crowd (Y'all ain't ready for me). It became more about Schtick then about performance.
I hope you keep touring and sharing your music with the world. We all know the music industry needs someone like you to show younger generations what good, make that great, music is all about. I just hope you add more songs to reward your life-long fans the opportunity to hear the songs that have become the soundtrack our lives.
Your loyal fan, Seth
(PS - this is NOT intended to start a flame war here - I just wanted to air my frustration with the repetitive shows). [Edited 5/30/11 19:06pm]

Dear Seth:
You say you don't want to start a flame war, but whether intentional or not, that is what you will do. I think it would have been wise of you not to go to so many concerts and get burnt out. These concerts were not meant to introduce new material but to play to as diverse as array of people possible with the "oldies" for those who may not have heard them before. You set yourself up for disappointment by going to too many shows. It is like indulging yourself with too many of your favorite drinks. After a while you become dull and resistant to them. But for those of us who didn't have the money, means, and time to see him in our youth--this concert was a chance to still catch Prince in his prime and introduce him to a whole new generation of fans, as well as rediscover him after decades of being out-of-touch. Therefore, what is a disappointment for you, is a new thrill others. My two cents. And that is all that it is. No disrespect intended. No, I completely get it. I understand what the concert series is all about and was happy to see so many people at the shows being "re-introduced" to Prince. All I was asking is that at some point can he have a show/performance for the REAL fans and not just the radio fans. THat's all I was requesting. I would have been nice to hear Thieves in the Temple or 7 or 5 Women or Crystal Ball... you get the gist.

Yes, I do. And I agree with you--would love to hear those songs, also (5 Women!!! drool!). Thank God for our audio collections! I consider myself a "real" fan as you say from 1981 onwards but I got busy with life and didn't listen for a long time. Dang! That sounds like an apology but it ain't! I appreciate his classic music and would like to hear more of it as well as more recent offerings. But to see classics I never thought I would get to see performed LIVE and introduce younger people who found them equally compelling--now THAT was a real thrill! He did play 17 days and partyman for the nights I went, just to let you know. Then last time I went he did anotherholeinyourhead and peach. I understand him playing the same thing, what do people do when they go on tours, it usually has a theme. I understand your point of view though, I haven't been a fan for thirty years lol but I have been a fan of Prince since I was a little girl, however I became a loyal fan a few years back. Since I know most of the songs outside of the hits, I can understand how you feel. To add to that it was a good experience but if I did here take me with u again I was gonna scream

Look, if I heard Raspberry Beret and Inglewood Swinging one more time, I was going to cut someone. BUT that's not Prince's fault. It was my fault for going to 6 damn concerts. When bands tour, they practice and choreograph only a certain set of songs... and Prince picks the songs.
He actually did a damn good job of throwing a few wild cards and fan favorites into the mix on most nights (17 Days, Strange Relationship, Beautiful Ones, Dreamer, Peach...) and scheduling intimate, guitar-driven club appearances for the hardcore fans. He brought in a slew of opening acts and guest artists (including Stevie Wonder, Janelle Monae, Mary J. Blige, Larry Graham, Gwen Stefani and Chaka Khan!). AND he did it for nearly two months.
The truth is, Prince can't play for a venue that holds 17,000 people and deliver a Troubadour set. The place is full of first-time concert-goers and people's grandmas. They want to hear "Raspberry Beret." And God help Prince if he doesn't play Purple Rain in an arena. People will hunt him down and kill him... even grandma.
Bottom line: Prince doesn't know which concerts you attended, how often you went and what you want to hear. Also, he doesn't care.
That said, I would kill to hear Eye Hate U, Morning Papers, and F.U.N.K performed live. But my name ain't Prince.

Thank you for making my point! That's all I am looking for is for Prince to do a show or two for the fans who want to hear the OTHER songs. I will openly admit that I am also a fan of Dave Matthews Band and MUSE. I love the DMB for their musicianship and not the drunk ass college kids who use the concert as their party place. But the one thing I love about the DMB and MUSE (for the most part) is that no two shows are ever the same and RARELY does the DMB play the same songs two nights in a row. Prince has been notorios for not playing the same shows but the last 10 years of touring have been repeats. And, I agree with you - Raspberry Beret and Inglewood Swinging had me out the door on a couple of concerts (as soon as i heard "Hey, Hey, Hey, Whatcha gotta say..." I was headed to the exits.
I am just wanting to see a concert for the fans that want to hear the other songs. I was at the Troubadour (1st show) and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was an incredible experience but it was extremely mellow. Prince is great at creating shows with tremendous energy and I would just like to see a show of some of the other great songs... just once!

I went to 10 shows including 2 at HOB & it wasn't until after about 4 shows in that things felt repetitive... That being said, Even though there were certain songs that were repeated every night or every other night, I always felt that the vibe of each show was unique... Some nights were a dance party from the start & others had extended slow jams.... Some shows were hits from start to finish & others were more obscure.... Some nights he danced while others he played guitar... Some shows I enjoyed more than others, but I don't regret a single one.....

Agree! I think he tried to please everyone and as the trite saying goes...you can't please everyone! But he sure did a good job trying! For instance, when Prince sang "Future Soul Song" last night, hardly anyone knew the lyrics or melody to it, including my son who heard me play it. And I love the fact he put that song in the set, knowing hardly anyone would know it. That said--time to put out a new album in the U.S.--we want it; moreover, we deserve it!!! Joke! Thanks Dave! That's exactly how I feel. I liked some shows more than others, but the overall experience was amazing. I did have to take a break every now and then because I was getting burnt out or just needed to rest. I do wish I had been there on 4/14 and the night he played Uptown (LOVE that song) but I always felt I got my money's worth, and sometimes more, at every show. Even the notorious show on 4/22 when he played "only" 90 minutes. It was 90 mintues that still had me feeling satisfied when I went home.

U should have went to the ONA 2002 tour, with that said someone that that has been performing music since 1978 is damned if they do & damned if they don't. U will never please everyone especially with an artist as diverse as Prince & if u are a fan since 1981 then u should know that. U have some groups that play the same shit in the same order night after night. He is 1 of the greatest live performers ever..if u don't like it..move on.

I always felt that his aftershows and small venue shows were for the old school fans.....2004 HOB aftershows, Key Club, 3121 aftershows, etc. Those who are only familiar with the hits generally don't enjoy these shows and aren't willing to wait around until the man takes the stage at 1:30am and plays until 4:40am. In my opinion, they're missing out bigtime cuz he is on a totally different level at those shows
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
To my knowledge he did play "Mountains", "Strange Relationship". "Bambi", "Forever In My Life", "Pop Life", "DMSR", "Partyman" & a few other off the beaten path gems but I wish he would have done more of them more often- I would be patient- I'd bet that eventually he will sling out some special tour/shows that will be for the hardcores- who knows, he may even do it at Paisley Park again- I know I'd rather pay 500.00 to be surrounded by less people and hear the rare jams than be stuffed into an arena for cheaper tickets only to hear the hits- I think we should all be patient and see what Prince has instore... Wow!! Exactly my thoughts/feelings. Each one was repetitive and unique all at the same time.

WOW! I exoected more from people here. This was the most immature and idiotic response I have ever seen and you should be proud of your massive intelligence. As I said (and this is the LAST time I defend my statement), I WISHED he would have a show (within the 21 shows) for the hardcore/real fans and not the radio fans. I also said that I was thankful and excited to see him. I would have liked to have seen a show for hardcore fans and not this "greatest hits, ulta-repetitive" show.
I thank you for yelling but you intelligence and shouting just show me how dumb and immature you really are. Learn the difference between attacks and criticism please or grow up. Thank you and have a nice day.

I went to three. It was perfect, although if the "fire sale" continued through this past weekend, I would have had no problem going one or two more times. (I scored $200 seats for $25, 2 out of the three times.)
I think he does a very good job of balancing the casual fans (which probably made up at least 90% of the audience at these shows), and those of us who put him at the top of our lists. He also does his club shows, which is a very unique gift from him to his die hard fans. It's hard to think of an artist at his level who will consistently plays sometimes TINY venues at reasonable prices (and using inventive ways to keep tickets out of the hands of scalpers, i.e. Hit & Run), to communicate directly with his fan-base. If you think about it, he almost spoils his hard core fans with Hit & Run shows, club dates and up until recently, free and exclusive music for his fan club.
As it is, I think my three shows were perfect, and all unique. They ended for me on 5/13, with Stevie Wonder, so that was a pretty good finale from my personal POV.
(The only thing that gets tired is the Sampler Set, and that is more because of what it is, than the particular songs that are "played.")
Maybe like many things in life, gluttony is what really spoils it. By the way, I wasn't as lucky as you to get to the Troubadour, even though it is a stone's throw from my house. I'm sorry you felt the ticket was wasted on you. [Edited 5/30/11 18:00pm] "There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."

His shows changed my life literally, it had nothing to do with him it was really showing me things about myself I never knew. It led to an enlightening experience overall, I walked out of it with a different perception of some things... strange but true lol

Yeah, I agree completely. I don't think people understand that the diverse fanbase still overwhelming prefers the old material. Seth should start something . . . let me think . . . call it "prince.org" and galvanize a substantial amount of fans that are actually interested in seeing and hearing the other songs. Then maybe, just maybe Prince would be inclined to do more shows of that nature.

I shouldn't make fun, because obviously we all (in prince.org) feel the same way Seth, but I think purplethunder3121 explained it clearly and thoroughly.
But I want to ask something, in all seriousness, how do you think Prince could pull that off? And what I mean is this: If you're doing shows in large arenas and you want people to support a 21 Night Stand, how do you think a fan would feel after hearing about it/reading a review and then showing up and saying to him/herself "What the hell are these songs?!?!?"
Prince was counting on a lot of word of mouth promotion, so it could be very detrimental to the success of the tour by suddenly playing songs that the majority of the audience is unfamiliar with. And Prince, more than most, enjoys the shock factor whenever possible. He's probably never going to spell out a setlist for the fans, because his mysterious aura is part of his appeal, so they like to "feel" like he was doing something nice for them by playing the Let's Go Crazy, Kiss and Raspberry Beret type tunes, or for people like us, Elephants and Flowers, Dolphin, and Chelsea Rodgers. And quite frankly, I prefer not knowing what song is next when I'm at at show.
So, besides doing smaller venue performances, how could Prince deliver a show like that in a 17,000 seat arena without pissing off over half the audience and causing people to badmouth his concert?

Seth~Good you posted your letter. Maybe he or someone close will read it actually. The moot point of 'you cannot please everyone all the time' hold true in this case though, but you are free to give your opinion.
While sure I would have loved to have seen more off the beaten path type of songs from the collection, I went to 3 East Coast Shows...and let me tell you...I am 42,..and have been a 'fan' almost since the beginning...HOWEVER, I had never gotten the chance to see him in concert as when I lived under mom and dad's roof..I was not able to go till I was 'older'. When 'older' came, I lived out of the US for a long time..so I never had the opportunity logistically. I Can tell you...I am very very thankful that I FINALLY was able to see a performer that I have ALWAYS wanted to see...To me, he is one of the classics that your children and future generations will only be able to watch video of. There are hardly any classics or good musicians around anymore that are in the public...
I consider it is blessing to have grown up in the era I did musically....I have seen alot of great performers/groups live..And PRince fit in that category for me....and I finally was able to see him/them.
I actually miss not having the chance to go and see or dance or hang at a Prince concert like I did this winter. I really really enjoyed myself...I don't think it is 'easy' to do what he/they did and tour like they are....
Anyway, for me, if I sat down to write a note....I think it would be a thank you note as I was very happy and grateful to see the shows I saw. I loved it.

I remember TGE tour and the majority of the audience not digging it because they didn't know the songs. If you're a hard to satisfy hardcore fan, go to a small club afterparty/jam. Greatest hits pay his bills and since his new songs suck, you're going to hear these old songs for many, many years to come when he's playing at large venues.

HERE'S MY QUOTE FROM MY INITIAL POST - "Now don't get me wrong. I am appreicative of every show you perform and loved every minute of it, however, I started getting disappointed when I kept hearing the same songs, anecdotes, and words to the crowd (Y'all ain't ready for me). It became more about Schtick then about performance."
What part of that statement is not appreciative or thankful. Why don't people read anymore? I am thankful and feel privileged to have Prince here for 21 shows. All I am asking is for ONE, JUST ONE of those shows to be for the hardcores. And, yes, I would have loved to go to an after party but was never able to get on the list of people. PEOPLE PLEASE READ - ALL I AM ASKING FOR WAS FOR ONE OF THOSE 21 SHOWS TO BE FOR THE HARDCORE FANS. DOES THAT MAKE IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR?
(Sorry for the shouting but this is getting frustrating/borderline ridiculous.) [Edited 5/30/11 19:05pm]

I REALLY would like to know how this ONE show would be promoted.
The explanations have been clear as to why it didn't happen. So why not propose a viable way it could happen?

I agree with most of what is said in this thread, sans the weasel's statement, but alas, weasels are weasels. Our dream come true would be for Prince to play a show of the less "mainstream" material rather than the hits.
David Bowie swore off playing the old hits. Nine Inch Nails had him tour and had Bowie close the shows. Sticking to mainly new material, and obscure older material, the crowds headed to the doors. The end result? Ten years later, he started playing the hits again.
The 21 night (sic) stand was (is?) brilliant marketing. He's created a buzz, remained relevant, maintained interest enough to get some more buyers for the next album, and he made a ton of money. However, a show in which he didn't play at least 2/3's of maistream hits/well-known songs probably wouldn't appeal to the majority of those that attended this run.
Perhaps devoting (no pun intened here) a single night to any fans (die-hard or casual) with a "Voted Upon" setlist would work for us. However, my guess is we would still see some, and maybe a lot of those mainstream songs on that setlist. In my books, diversity rules, but the reality is, hits are what drive record and concert ticket sales, and the buyers want to hear the hits. Combine that with what is now acceptible to Prince for Prince to play, and his need to control everything from the top on down, it's not likely that it's going to happen. [Edited 5/30/11 20:11pm]
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well, since you want to know how this is promoted I guess I will have to put on my marketing hat for a bit...
One, have a show that was announced on Prince.org or on his website (which doesn't exist). Once announced, Prince could easily ask for fans to submit their requests of songs to hear that evening. Then he could have made a creative call as to what exact songs get played. After all, he is an artist and can choose what he wants. But that fact that he is acknowledging his hardcore fans and asking what they want to hear would be enough to satisfy me. I digress...
Then once he has all the information he can plan a show at the HOB or another small venue for only his fans. The bottom line about this is that it would announced only to fans via a site that caters to just fans. And, unfortunately, this site is the only one I am familiar with right now. I used to love NPGMusicClub but as we know that is no longer. You all know, as well as I do, that if Prince announced he was playing a show just for fans and they had a say in the set list then that show would sell out in no time. Especially if it were at a place like the HOB. I think the Troubadour as too small for all fans to attend.
So, does that answer your question about marketing and promotion. I think it is feasible and realistic. It's just a metter of getting the word out. Believe me, someone on his end could tally the songs coming in from fans. That's a quick and easy database in Excel and then rank in order of votes. But, like I said, he can change it around and play the songs he loves too. Since 2001 most of the tours have been greatest hits with the exception of the Ranbow Children tour which was OK considering he played Starfish and Coffee along with Anna Stesia. For the most part, his last tours have been incredibly repetitive.
How's that for a response?

Two of the HOB shows & both of the Troubadour shows were pretty darn obscure setlists. The Forum show I went to on 5/14 started with:
-When Eye Lay My Hands on U. -Laydown -She's Always in My Hair -Future Soul Song
And Climaxed with:
-If I Was Your Girlfriend -Insatiable -Scandelous -& Adore
I must say, that was one of my favorite Forum shows just because of the varied setlist...

First I was not being confrontational with you nor picking on your post at all. But since you really asked...the part where you sounded like an ingrate ("What part of that statement is not appreciative or thankful. Why don't people read anymore?") was:
"I started getting disappointed when I kept hearing the same songs, anecdotes, and words to the crowd (Y'all ain't ready for me). It became more about Schtick then about performance."
I read you loud and clear and said you had a right to your opinion and get and understand it...This is the same old same old debate about a hardcore fan. I consider myself a hardcare fan as well-not just a fan of the most popular stuff. I listen to the obscure stuff too. Sure I would love to see it and hear it..but I have not had that luck yet. In the interim I will take what I can get...and I enjoyed it. SHeesh...You guys got 21 SHOWS...We only had a fraction of that in NY...Other states got zero.
Maybe you could hire Prince for a private party for $2M for the hour and you can ask him to play the 5 or 6 songs you want...

I loved alll 5 shows I went to. I was not able to go to the troubadour or H.O.B. but have been a fan since 84 and did not get to see him in my youth. The first time I got to see him was the Musicology tour so I am not complaining. Every show I went to was different. There were the standards, but nothing was in the same order. I especially loved the Cool/Don't stop... part. I think the shows at smaller venues are more for fans Seth. He can't be playing obscure stuff to 17,000 people. I saw old and young people there. I took my 15 year old nephew who didn't know one Prince song and he had a blast. My friend took her 11 year old child with special needs. I mean, really, Seth what do you expect at an arena like that??? Under certain circumstances, urgent circumstances, desperate circumstances, profanity provides a relief denied even to prayer.
