The following Wednesday and Thursday, Prince must have heard the complaints and pulled out all stops and played every single popular song he had. Unfortunately I wasn't there. I didn't want to be burned again.

So, if you think that it was bad that he was playing all his popular radio songs, then you should have been to the show I was at. Not only was it a variety show with everyone other than Prince playing. There were songs played by Santana, there was a Jimi Hendrix type of song, a Rihana song sung by his backups, the song "Misty Blue" sung by his backups, and many, many more songs like that. I paid a lot of money to see Prince and I got a variety show.

I would have been happy to hear the shows you went to and would have left happy and dancing. Instead we left the concert disappointed and confused.

That said, I never said I was a die hard Prince fan. In fact, the only reason why I spent over $300 to see a Prince concert was because my son wanted to go. Otherwise I wouldn't have gone. I was just giving my observation of the concert I went to. People were leaving when it was obvious he wasn't going to play any top 10 songs. A die hard person would have loved the variety show he put on, but I paid to see Prince sing and to sing the songs I knew and not ones that only people like you would know all the words to. Instead I saw his backup singers sing 3 songs and they were cover songs to top it off. I didn't pay to see them sing, I paid to see Prince sing. He could have put a multitude of other songs he said he had in place of those cover songs that were sung. It's possible he wrote the songs and I didn't know, such as Misty Blue or the Rihanna song.

So again, people like you would have LOVED the show I went to. Me? I left confused and unsatisfied.

This is what I and a lot of people have been saying for years P has to do a hits show in a large venue.

Casual fans come to these shows and they want to hear hits. Also since he has not done a full scale tour in the states since 2004 he is dealing with a whole new generation who may only know the hits.

misty blue is a cover version and i will say that prince live these days is not all that it's cracked up 2 be because there is no staple anymore. it's like a revue type of show. but this is what the OP of this thread meant by how this type of show got old fast. if u wanted the hits and u felt u didn't get them and left unsatisfied is the same as someone else going 2 a show and wanting 2 see the prince that they knew growing up seeing a show where he didn't have 2 rely on the hits 2 put on a good show. the easiest way 2 do this for prince now is 2 balance the shows in half hits half rare or current material for the fans that have supported him throughout his career. will he do this? time will tell but i'm betting unless he stops doing arena gigs, it won't happen.

Of course he played Purple Rain, Cool, Raspberry Beret, but at the end we were confused. He basically finished with two ballads that the hardcore folks would have loved hearing. But ballads? He did have the Jimi Hendrix song with the house lights on, but that was weird too since that would have been cool in the middle of the concert instead at the end. I don't know whether he did that with any of the Los Angeles concerts.

It seemed to work because everyone who attened the first LA Forum show on 4/14 was blown away. He did 5 or 6 encores... half the crowd left before it was all over, but those that stayed say it was one of the best Prince concerts ever. Sorry you were confused by what he did at the show you went to. Maybe he'll come back and play more hits to make it up to you someday.

However, if you went to the 2/21 show at Oakland, I gotta say he did perform a mixture of hits and more obscure tunes. Here's the setlist I found for that show:

i saw 4 shoes here in ny and i can truly say that he did welcome 2 america in full as the opener but then the rest of the show disappointed me. same with the 2nd show ..it was only the 3rd show that blew my mind with the setlist he did. the last show was good but wished it could have been more on the levels of the 3rd show with a mixture of cult classics vs the majority of hits. but as the lights go down u just never know what's gonna happen

Thanks. That was the set list. I was hoping to hear at least 1999. I did tell everyone that the Wednesday's show (Monday was the first show) was going to be the show to see since he didn't play any "real" hits. I was at odds with myself whether I wanted to pay another $300 to see it, but decided to save my money. Sure enough he went all out on Wednesday's show as he started with "Let's Go Crazy." Oh well.

You're right that it did appear that he was doing the concert in a series and each show was going to be completely different. The Thursday show turned into a totally fanfest with no opening act and 3 hours of songs and dancing. I'm assuming he did that in LA too.

I can relate to what you're saying. I kept coming back and brought a friend who's favorite song is Little Red Corvette. He did it on 4/30 but she wasn't there. Went to 6 more shows and finally he did it again. One of my favorite songs to see him do live is Shh... luckily I got to see it about 5 times, each time better than the last.

Insatiable, Scandalous and Adore, back to back. I got to see that in LA and loved every single minute of it. It made the show for me. I kept wishing that he'd do those songs, and he did. It was great. Then again, I love his ballads. I wish I was lucky enough to be at that Oakland show. U got to hear Uptown, and I didn't get to hear that one at any of the LA shows that I went to. I guess everyone has their personal favorites, songs they'd like to hear. I'm not complaining though. I'm very happy that he came to LA, happy I got to go to the shows.

More re: Oakland show.....If I Was Your Girlfriend, funked it out with Let's Work, then Controversy, yeah, I would've been pleased with that show. Very pleased. I would've been up in that piece like, Add the ballads too? Oh yeah, really great show.

Shh is also a favorite of mine as well. He did that one at the last show that I went to. Very, very, nice, & I was in purple heaven after seeing that.
