NDRU, you're missing the point and that's why, in my opinion, you should probably at least ATTEMPT to respect the perspectives from people who were actually there, instead of offering an opinion about a performance that you did not attend. So let ME digress. I went to the Feb 24 show in Oakland, as well; I went for my birthday. I had a great, great time. But first of all, the Oakland shows should not be placed in the same category of the L.A. shows, different feel. But more importantly, "these people" that are allegedly boasting about 4/14 ALL have been back to the Forum! So, it's not like we're TRYING to hold onto some "myth" or "tale." Uh....it's the opposite....we all WANT TO SEE IT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's why we keep going back. That's why we've committed to going to 10, 15, 20 shows. We know what he CAN do. I was fortunate; I got to see him do it again...but it wasn't at any of the other 10 Forum shows that I went to, it wasn't at the 8pm show at the Troubadour that many of my friends went to....NO....it was at the midnight...and only the midnight.......show at the Troubadour. Do you realize that many of us on the org will be seeing Prince about 5 MORE times in the next few weeks? So...when we see something out of the ordinary....when we experience something TRULY magical that we will remember for the rest of our lives.............guess what? We're going to talk about it. Carry on.
c'mon, now!
I never said the show was not magical, that it was not the best of his career, or not the best by any performer in the history of performance, or that you should stop talking about how it changed your life. I never suggested that I did not respect peoples' opinions of the show or that they were wrong. I never said anything to take away from it, and I don't want to take away from it.
I shared an opinon about a performer, not a performance
I said if you've seen ten shows by the same performer doing the same songs in the same place, you have a good idea of what that performer is capable of, and you should not feel bad about having missed one special one.
Not everyone saw Jordan score 67 against the Celtics, but if you watched him a lot you know what he can do, even on a bad night.
oy!
I get what you're trying to say here but I still disagree. To extend your analogy...projecting what you believe Jordan was capable of doing is nowhere near the same as experiencing him doing it. The actual experience is not comparable to one's imagination.
I can guess that Emeril Lagasse can cook a mean meal based upon watching his show and seeing the reactions from his guests who get to sample his dishes. Getting to personally eat one of his meals is another thing altogether.

Read what you just wrote. You are saying that someone who has seen hundreds of Jordan's games (except that one) or dozens of Prince concerts (except that one) has not really experienced those two, but is rather like watching Emeril cook without ever having eaten even a single one of his meals?
Sorry that doesn't really make sense to me.
To properly use your analogy, those two situations would be like having had many of Emeril's dishes, but perhaps not having had his best dish.
but now this has gotten very silly |

I know what you said: "If you have been to 10 of these shows I think you must have a pretty good idea of what happened on the night that you missed." If that night was April 14, 2011, then you would be 100% incorrect. "But making it into some legend in which you will never understand seems a bit much." It WAS a bit much, hence: legendary performance that was hard to comprehend. With all due respect...I think...I would prefer to discuss the concert with either: people that attended or people that are interested in what occurred that night at the Forum. It seems that's the intent of the creator of this thread, so either try to contribute.....or I don't know.....maybe another thread is yearning for your opinion? Btw, the midnight show at the Troubadour was even better, so you might be interested in crashing that thread....just throwing some ideas out there. |

Your original post in this thread was silly. For HOPEFULLY the last time, the APRIL 14, 2011 performance is being compared to the OTHER FORUM PERFORMANCES during the 21 NIGHT STAND...not Prince's entire career. Seriously, is it THAT hard to comprehend? |

On that we can agree. At the end of the day it really doesn't matter if you get it or not, or if anyone else agrees with my opinion or not. And I don't mean that to sound defensive...because believe me, I'm not really tripping over this issue. For those who were there and get it, we get it. For those who were there and had a different experience, fair enough; they too are entitled to their own opinions.
But those are really the only people who should have something to say about it because if you weren't there then how could you possibly have ANYTHING to say about it..? You have nothing to contribute to the conversation other than unfounded conjecture. And how valuable is that..?
No offense.
I don't think anyone is trying to convince anyone else of anything. As I said when I originally posted my thoughts about the show I wasn't trying to make anyone feel bad or brag about anything...my only goal was to share my experience with a board of (presumably) like-minded fans. What an unexpected surprise to find that there were others who were there and had a similar experience. That made it all the more special for me.
I think the question has been answered about as well as it is going to be. I hope we were able to give the OP some insight regarding his question. The "...feel up Sheila E..." comment still cracks me up. |

I think I get it. I've seen Paul McCartney (my favorite artist) 9 times. When he played Coachella, he stated that it was 11 years to the day that his wife died. Since the show was in the desert, and she loved the desert, he said he wanted to play on that day. Forget show, it was the best 3 hours of my life. It wasn't the songs, it was the feeling, the energy. There were several moments that he almost burst into tears. I'll never forget that night.
I appreciate you sharing that. Sounds like Paul was in a very special place that night and you were able to connect with that emotion on a level where it became more than just a performance. I can dig it. |

all I really meant to say was that this person should be happy they got to see Prince ten times. That is an experience. We can't all experience what everyone else experiences, so we need to appreciate what we do experience. |

By the way, I had an amazing Jan 31 show in NYC. I loved it.....It almost made me think I should not go to the Feb 7 show in case I was disappointed. I went to the Feb 7 and enjoyed it completely. I have fav moments from each show...
It is natural to want to 'compare' but you will still be happy that you went..So waht if one show was not as 'good' as another...They are still excellent shows...
Again..you guys have them there willing to do 21 shows...Go as many times as you can afford to go!

Each show has its own special moments, and each show leaves all with indefinite inspiration...and inspiration is what is most important because it's what stays in the heart. |

Michael Jordan never scored 67 against the Celtics he scored 63 and lost. Game 2 1986 quarterfinals. Kobe is better MJB2 |
