Nursing home residents St. Peter's Square moderately enthusiastic about performance of global superstar

"Prince, which prince?"

Author: Marieke Van Pee

GHENT - While the ordinary music lover has paid up to 128 euro's for a glimpse of "his purple highness, the retirement home residents in the Onze Lieve Vrouw ter Rive get it for free. Yet they are not all equally enthusiastic. 'Prince?, We prefer Jo Vally or Andre Rieu.’

The residents of the old people's home are true VIPs tonight and tomorrow. Their rooms overlook the St. Peter's Square that will be on fire for two nights during the performances of Prince.

"Prince, which prince?’ was what Yvonne Rabaut (86) was thinking when she heard the news. "I've heard that this man is very well known, but I've never heard of him. Whether he is Prince or the king, I won't get up for it.’

Yvonne is a big music fan however. "I have more than one hundred CD discs,’ she says proudly. ‘Especially classical and soft music, which is much nicer than the tsjoenke tsoenke music of today. My hair gets in an upright position. Should Jo Vally or Andre Rieu play here once, then I will look outside now or then. Or James Last, because that is my favorite.’

Young

Neighbor Gilberte Guchtenaere (86) is not waiting for Prince. ‘That's music for young people. Last year there was another singer here (Leonard Cohen) and that was nice. I have been listening to him in my room for three nights.’ She will probably has to share that room with a few others this year. ‘I have had a lot of acquaintances that asked if they can come here to watch the concert. That is fine, but if there is too much noise, the windows will be closed.’"

Roger Rogiers (87) is also expecting people tonight. ‘Some friends come over to watch the show and bring some drinks and snacks along. So it will be quite cosy. I only know Prince from this weeks paper, but I'll probably recognize a few songs when I hear them.’

Dancing

The purple highness may score moderately with the seniors, the staff makes up for it. ‘When I dropped the news that we might be able to look from our roof, I got a 120 requests in no time.’ said Els De Volder, coordinator of the home. ‘We then decided that each staff member was allowed to bring one person. Fifty people are allowed on out terrace each night. More is really not possible, because we wouldn't want to fall through the roof while dancing.’
