The setlist posted above is accurate and complete. The Forum was full to the rafters and it was rocking. Very enthusiastic crowd last night.
Highlights for me were "Shhhh..."interlaced with "U Will Be With Me"...incendiary guitar work on that one...and "Rude Boy," which appeared to be impromptu. During "Cool," P called Shelby over, "Shelby, can I talk to u?" He told her something off-mic, she then relayed it to Renato and the other singers and the band fell into it and Shelby knocked it out of the park IMO. Believe it or not, the covers "Hollywood (Inglewood) Swinging" and "Play That Funky Music" went down well, maybe due to being played earlier in the set while there was more energy available to put into them.
A complaint: the volume has been turned up to the point where it was uncomfortable for me at times. What was a crystal-clear sound experience has been affected to a degree by the increased volume. Not sure why this decision was made because it was not too low by any means before but for the first time, the clarity that I had bragged so much about was marred. Hopefully this will be corrected in future shows.
Esperanza Spalding opened again but this time P didn't come out to jam with her. Ironically, the sound issues that plagued her set on Friday night were worked out for the most part.

Well, I can't say I agree with you on that one. If somebody comes to this site and reads this who does not follow the site, and has not seen Prince live in a few years will go away thinking he did a medley of When Doves Cry, SOTT including Single Ladies, etc. For the so-called "Sampler Set," I think it would be more accurate if instead of listing all the songs, posters would simply put in a sentence like this: "Prince Karaoke, where Prince sings a tiny bit of 5-9 songs played over a tape for 2 to 5 minutes."
Update: as I mention in my post below, I still want to thank the poster for actually putting the setlist on the site. I don't want anyone thinking I am taking a shot at him. I'm taking a shot at Prince, which makes me like the little brother seeing his adored big brother do something stupid, but having the balls to call him out on it. I can already smell the flames from the Prince ass kissers round the corner.
At the shows I went to he never sung to Single Ladies, meaning he was just standing there listening. That is the one moment in a Prince concert I am just as talented as Prince. I too have the ability to listen to "Single Ladies," standing there doing nothing. OK, maybe he was shaking a bit, which I can do, but would get booed. Imagine Miles Davis or John Coltrane just standing on stage to a tape of a song like "Single Ladies." You can't, because if they were still alive, they would not stoop so low. Why mention it? Prince talks about being a serious musician, and wastes valuable time on stage. Based on reaction to my posts where I put down the Karaoke, it seems many on this site here would rather Prince just play the tape then take the time for a full length song like "Computer Blue," or "Act of God."
Also the poster, as many others have done, has listed: Play That Funky Music (with Love Rollercoaster) Now let's be honest, if he plays one lick of a song for 10 seconds, does this really count?
Same thing with Controversy (with Housequake). Just because he chants "Anybody Know bout the quake," does not mean the song was performed.
I am a huge U2 fan also, and the people on U2's fan site do the same crap, since Bono does the snippet thing during a few songs each night, but at least they usually put (snippet) in the set list they are typing. I figure if the snippet is less than 10 seconds, I don't even need to know about it. For the May 6 concert, someone else did a set list where there was no mention of it being Prince Karaoke, so anybody reading that must have thought Prince played a long show.
The exception: "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough," that part sung by the girls is at least enough to deserve mention. [Edited 5/8/11 6:35am] [Edited 5/8/11 6:41am]

Steven, just to be clear, I really appreciate you taking the time to put a set list up. I know my post above looks like I'm picking on you for not putting in "Prince Karaoke," for the sampler set. So far you are the only one to post the set list, and Please don't think I was picking a bone with you. I was not. Sure, I am a self-described Prince historian, full fledged fanatic. I also call Prince out for crap like the playing of a tape during a concert.
And, I admit, I was sort of wishing you had identified that those songs were not really played, but I still have to say I really appreciate you taking the time. I sometimes am guilty of thinking anyone who posts here has to have the ability of a professional journalist, but I still have to be sure I give credit where credit is due.

By the way, this May 7 show looks like it was short and sweet. For $25, a sure bargain. I also see the set list was almost just like the Columbia, SC show I went to for $125 tickets behind the stage(yes, you can clown me for that, but the view there was actually pretty sweet.) Not sure why I am including the set list from an old show, but it was also a short show, and the set list was very similar.
Columbia, SC Set List 3-21-11:
D.M.S.R. Pop Life Musicology Prince And The Band incl. Tighten Up interpolation .
In retrospect, the above show was a bit short for my $125, so it makes me jealous of the LA people who can go to 5 shows for the price of my behind the stage seats(Ha!)
Of course, if I could go back in time with the $25 ticket infor for LA, I would do it all over again, I just would haved been a little bitter knowing he was playing favorites with the LA fans.

I've always wondered how Prince could sing this after his religious beliefs changed things a bit. Lately, he seems to have lessened his Jehovah talk a bit, and of course, he has played Bambi over the years anyway, which I doubt gets many Watchtower People too excited.
"Met a Girl Named Nikki, I guess you could say she was some kinda fiend...met her in a hotel lobby reading some kinda naughty thing..
She said howd u like 2 waste some time
Well, I'd love to hear Blackwell drumming on this, and love to hear Prince playing guitar instead of the dancing around. As awful as it was to hear Dave Grohl sing this on the Foo Fighters B-side, I think I like that mix better with the drums and guitar turned up in the mix.
Don't anybody think I like that version better, as Dave's singing is meant for Foo Fighters songs, and his vocal limitations are obvious on his risky, but great remake.

Now now, even as much as I complain about Prince and his short time singing at MOST, but not all of his shows...for $25, it was a bargain. I wish I was there. I would have to be out of my mind to say it was awful. Yes, I would have wanted a longer show, and as I pointed out, it was very close to my 3-21 show in Columbia. Throw in Anotherloverholenyohead, Scandalous, and Guitar, and it would have been awesome.
I just wish he sung full length Prince songs for 2 hrs 30 min each night, and did not have so much time given to background singers who won't be in the band in a few years. He gave all that stage time to Tamar, and for what? Where is she now? As much as I liked Tamar, she is probably waiting tables. In this day in age, if you don't rap about killing people or use Auto-Tune, then you may as well be out of the business.

Eye'll Never B Another Fool (with Nicole Scherzinger)...I did not know she sings as good as she looks, imo. The set-list does looks rather pedestrian, but tonight was a full-on DANCE. It was about him having energy tonight and the Forum being right there with him the whole time except that about one-third were left after Kiss.
DO NOT LEAVE UNTIL AFTER THE CAMERAMEN LEAVE.
My son was wore out after Controversy and was trying to sleep until he came out again. He got his second wind.
I enjoyed this show on a Saturday night.

where is tamar u ask? why don't u pick up some tyler perry plays and u'll see her in there ..in fact she's in stage version of the new tyler perry film "madea's big family reunion"
and i just wish prince would throw this whole setlist away with the exception of dmsr, musicology, shhh, eye'll never be another fool and kick some new shit man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Someone sounds a little un - grateful. Prince blessed us in LA with this concert run. Every night is not going to be what you want to hear. Deal with it. I've been to 3 different shows, they were all different for sure. By the way, on 4/22 he played Guitar, two weekends ago he played, Adore

For the record I am, in fact, a journalist.
When a song interpolates another song, it is worth mentioning. Prince (and U2 fans, as you mentioned) have always done that. I copy & pasted this from my setlist that I built for setlist.fm, and took out all of their coding, but when I say (with Love Rollercoaster) or (with Housequake) it's mentioning that parts of the track were played. Not the entire song. Two seconds, five seconds, whatever. If it's long enough for a Prince fan to notice, it's long enough to mention.
It's great that you don't think so, but Prince setlists have always included these snippets/interpolation markers and I'm not going to stop including them just because you don't like them.
You may not like the sampler set, but I'm pretty sure the casual fans are in love with it. Ultimately it doesn't matter anyway, Prince is gonna do whatever he wants.

FWIW, after seeing 8 shows at the Forum, I believe who you are sitting around/with has just as much to do with Prince and the music he plays. Yesterday, I was around people fully intent on getting down, and it was an AMAZING time. It's hard for me to get excited over [Inglewood] Swinging, but when everyone is having a good time, I really enjoy it.
Is anyone else ready for a 10 minute "When Doves Cry?" If he started with that at 9:40 and left the stage for good at 9:50, I'd leave a happy dude.

Who are the artist for these songs: Eye'll Never B Another Fool (with Nicole Scherzinger). Is this song by her? Rude Boy? Make You Feel My Love?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Eye'll Never B Another Fool is from Chaka Khan's Paisley Park album. Rude Boy is a Rihanna song. Make You Feel My Love is a Bob Dylan song.

Good morning people! So I just woke up, and I wanted to read all of your thoughts before commenting on last nights show. I went to opening show on the 14th and the Thursday March 28th show so I have last nights show to compare. I personally thought it was a great show with a great energy. Now I know many of you are pissed or annoyed that He is playing the same routine and criticize his melody routine which includes "Single Ladies", but come on people it's fun. I lam a prince fan, but after joining the org, I can see that their are Prince fanatics! So I understand their thoughts about why they don't like. I took Prince virgins to the concert and seeing their reaction to him and the songs is so funny and makes you feel good. I took it all in last night And just remember everthing. I think more and more people r going to the concerts because so many people are spreading the word.I will most likely attend q few more concerts if I have money, and $25 is a great deal. So don't be so harsh on Prince!

Rude Boy is cover of a Rhianna song Make you Feel My Love is cover of a Bob Dylan song, it's sung by the 4 back up singers (including the bass player). Beautiful harmonies on this one.
I thoroughly enjoyed last night's show. It was a Purple Party from start to finish. The highlight for me was Shh! Prince killed it with his vocals and guitar. This version was just as good or even better than the one he did at Coachella. What I liked best about last night is he came out dancing, played hella guitar, and sang his butt off (except for Kiss, but he did do the dance break down).
The whole crowd was on their feet from the start and ready to party. You could tell Prince was in a good mood, having a good time, and feeding off the energy from the crowd.
Was this best of the 6 shows I've seen? Not sure. It might be a tie with the 4/23 show with Chaka Khan & Larry Graham. What's amazing is every show has had it's own vibe and different highlights. Some of my favorite moments from other shows include Prince jamming with Larry Graham, Prince "fainting" into Shelby's arms during Nothing Compares 2 U, Whole Lotta Love w/ Nikka Costa, Prince sneaking on stage to play guitar with Mint Condition, Prince sneaking on stage to play guitar with Esperanza, Prince being all down and dirty including the snake crawl on 4/29. I could go on and on. For the last 3 shows, Sheila E's Glamourous life has been a show stopper, and last night it seemed like she got a one minute standing ovation after her solo. You could tell that reaction gave Prince a thrill too.
It seems like Prince is trying to deliver a different experience every night. He plays a lot of the same songs but with different arrangements. He said next Thursday and Saturday were going to be special. I plan to be there.
