Anyone going to all 21 shows?

Just wondering if anyone out there is gonna do the complete set, all 21 nights in LA...

When Prince did his 21 nights in London at the O2 venue in 2007 my friend George and myself did the whole lot, all 21 gigs plus all the aftershows/parties eek ...

It cost us a whole heap of cash but I'm really, really glad that we did it, nearly killed me as a lot of times we had to drive 3 hrs to get home so that I could go straight in to work eek

I believe that me and my mate are in an exclusive club of maybe 3 people who did every single show cool

So I am curious to know if anyone out there is as insane/nuts/whatever8-) lol as we were 4 years ago?

At $25 a night, if I lived in L.A., I would very seriously consider it. I'm planning on driving down from the Bay Area again, but if I was within an hour or three of the venue, the urge to go all nights would be extremely tempting. Having seen two nights in Oakland and two in L.A., I have some questions:

-Did you ever get bored with certain songs? For example, I could listen to him do "Uptown" (as an older era example) or "Laydown" (as a current era example) every night, but "Cool" I've tired of hearing every night.

-Did you get the feeling some nights he performed a certain song especially soulfully/electric, and other nights it lacked kick? For example, the opening night in Oakland I felt "Purple Rain" lacked heart and almost felt perfunctory, but the third night in Oakland with Sheila E. on drums, it was absolutely life-affirming and inspiring.

-Did you feel hearing certain songs repeatedly hurt the impact of them on future nights? Or were you just as thrilled to hear them throughout the run?

Thanks. Very interested in your thoughts.

If I lived in LA, I wouldn't go 21 shows, I love Prince with all my heart, and I like to go to show a lot , even when they the same. But 21 x is too much, haha.

If I lived in LA and had the cash and time, I would go at least 6 times. And the limit will be 10 shows I think. lol

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I kind of agree with this.

I live in LA, within 15 mins of the Forum. For me, this residency is like a dream come true. The list of trivial, meaningless things I've wasted $25 on would be too long to list. I feel like for that amount, I can go to a show just to see how the setlist has changed from one night to the next or to check out an opening act whom I've wanted to see.

I attended opening night 4/14 and last Friday 4/22. Earlier Tues I bought tix for all three shows this week...my girlfriend wanted to go back so I got Thursday first...then checked out Saturday because that appears to be the night where he lets it hang out. On a whim I looked to see what was left for Friday and when a great riser appeared, I just got it...virtually free because on Ticketmaster's site there is a $20 rebate offer for doing a trial membership to some discount website.

My brother, who is as big if not bigger fan than I, thinks I'm nuts and that I'm already verging on overkill. smile I very well may be burned out after this week but as of right now, I'm not. Really curious to see what new songs he might play and what guests may show up unannounced. But I agree, I'm thinking between six and ten shows will probably be enough for me.

Good questions MikeX! I would like to know too! (And respect btw, so cool you did it!)

If I lived in LA I would also go to every show I could. I would even go alone if I had to!

I practically play a couple of Prince songs everyday, I wouldn't mind hearing them live again and again. But more than 'just' listening to the songs I would study his leadership as a musician; how he arranges the songs, the instruments, and how he directs the musicians, the dynamics, his cues, etc....

Man, I would love to go to every single show. I've promised myself that I'll never miss a Prince show if I can avoid it!

I went last Friday and Saturday, and I want to go again this Saturday. I might also go to one of the Thursday shows to get the "Thursday night special."

Parking at the Foum is $25 also, so that adds to price, but it's still a bargain.

Well it was 4 yrs ago and the old memory aint what it was (I blame Jack Daniels for that) but yes, some songs did get a bit repetitive, e.g Purple Rain.

The over-riding thing was feeling exhausted for much of the time, I mean totally, utterly shattered. We were travelling 120 + miles there and same back at the end of every aftershow or party

bear in mind that there was an afterparty every single night, I believe he actually performed at 14 out of the 21, the rest were either some other band or sometimes a DJ spinning records. Trouble was there was no way of knowing if he was gonna perform at which afterparty so we always stayed til the early hrs just in case or til it got so late(early lol) that it was clear he wasnt gonna show that particular time. We were driving away from the O2 back home at 3am or later!! Crazy having to go straight into work but thats what i was doing, not even like I have a desk job, i'm a postman lol

There were some very memorable aftershows including the final nite when I think he played for 3 hrs. I managed to nab the setlist from the guy on mixing desk for that one biggrin

One of the other posters on this thread mentioned burn out and to be brutally honest I think I did burn myself out, I guess u really can have too much of a good thing. Reading about these W2A shows a few yrs ago i would be plotting how i could fly out to see some shows but right now I'm not that bothered.

It happened to a friend of mine from England, she saw nearly 400 shows all over UK and Europe and even moved to Mpls to live, she did everything a Prince fan could ever hope to do. I've done 200 + shows worldwide and the same applies, i'm kinda done with it.

I'm not saying that I never want to see another Prince show, i'm just saying i am no longer completely obsessed with it to the point where it takes over my every waking (and sometimes sleepng) thought.

Sorry for the long post, I didn't mean to ramble on and on and on... lol

I thought about flying out to LA, and getting a hotel, and going to all 21, but even though it would have been possible, I would have had to work 2 jobs for the rest of the year. As I age, my ability to work like that is gone. I thought I was lazy when I was in my 20's, but now...I'm a complete slacker. Now if he did 10 nights in Atlanta, I would go to all 10. Now if the Stevie Wonder show happens, I will be kicking myself for not going. Since I live in Florida, his current format of doing everything at the last minute will keep me away.

I think I would have enjoyed all 21 shows, but even though the Sign "O" The Times era was nearly the same show every night, I would've enjoyed it much better, as Prince had a better band, and he was much better live at the time. The 1987 Prince would not have sung over a tape playing. Of course, if somebody gave me say...$5000 to do whatever I wanted to with, I'd be there for all 21.

me and my brother went to all 21 O2 gigs in London as well as all the 21 Indigo2 gigs plus the Koko show that year so my guess is there was quite a few more who did the whole set - as you say worth every penny but tiring at work the next day!

Have not posted here in ages, but this caught my eye, wow, almost 4 yrs since that lunacy took hold with 21 nights in London, oddily enough I am living in London now, unlike four yrs ago in Germany, still made it to 9 shows and 6 aftershows though.

As for Wolfie, well I shall keep a zipper on that subject, almost got banned last time, with warnings sent and all, but I got satisfaction out of the fact that whatever i wrote hit a nerve and he reported it...

Back to the topic, i have seen Prince 15+ times live, 200 or 400+ is beyond my imagination, although if the opportunity was there i would probably take it, then again I tried to organise a trip to Austria last summer, which didnt happen and missed a great gig in Vienna, at the stadthalle where i had seen U2 and Rammstein back in the day, I guess you take some and lose some, and it is exhausting work.

Got some of the recent torrent stuff flying about and the main thing for me is Prince is as tight as ever with the live show, great reviews last yr in Berlin and Vienna, so, when he makes his next 21 nights nearby...I will be bankrupt!!!

BTW, love the MS office style layout of this Mods

If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

I'm updating this post because apparently I lied...LOL Maybe a better word might be "miscalculated." Out of the twelve shows performed at the Forum thus far and the two Troubadour shows, I've attended ten...nine of the Forum shows and one of the Troubadour's. It was a good for me to have a mini-break at this point of the engagement because I was about ready for one...but I am not done with it yet. I won't make any more predictions, however.

I've been to 8 so far, including the 11 pm Troubadour show. The only shows I've missed are 4/14 sad , 4/21, 5/5, and 5/14 (and 7 pm Troubadour).

And yes, I plan to go to more. I'm glad Prince is taking a break from LA. I need the rest!

I agree, I need the rest and so does my car! Been to 6 shows. Driving to and from the Inland Empire each time is a task, especially at night. Of course when the run is over, it'll be kind of strange since the past month has been one of the most entertaining periods of time for me ever.

We've been to four at the forum and the early troubadour show. If he changed his set lists up more, I'd go again sooner. As it stands now, I'm done until the last two shows.

And I don't mean that in a negative way. I just can't justify the $100 night (2 tix, gas, parking) for maybe 1 or 2 different songs.

No...blew that the first Thursday, the second Thursday (infamous $10 tix), and the Stevie

appearance...but 9 out of twelve is more than I ever thought plus the early Troubador show.

I'm a Purple Zombie.

I got my routine down where I can leave about 8:00 without a ticket and be in for the opener.

I'm also glad there's a break until Memorial Weekend.

You think there are some non-orgers around that are doing all 21.

I have been to 11 of the 12 Forum shows and am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to indulge in this great artistry. Of the 11 shows I have been to, I would say 2 were somewhat disappointing or below par, particularly Saturday April 30th where Prince passed on singing many vocal parts and one other show whose date escapes me now where a large section of covers were played along with it being a shorter show.

Of the 11 shows so far I would say 4 to 6 have been magical and inspiring. Here is a list of musical highlights that have made this pursuit completely worthwhile;

-20min versions of "When Eye Lay My Hands on U" on 2 occasions

-Hearing "The Love We Make"

-Prince playing guitar to Chaka singing a complete version of "Sweet Thing" a Prince staple that usually gets swallowed by crowd singing was allowed to be performed in a complete form with Chaka singing.

-DMSR has made several appearances and is a great show opener and is best when allowed to stretch a little longer.

-"17 Days" "She's Always In My Hair", "Pop Life", "Sometimes It Snows In April", have all been very special as they are played and sung complete and allows the fans to really enjoy Prince's lyrics & song writing, funk jams aside.

-Another treat was hearing a good chunk of "Black Sweat" sung during the sampler set which has occurred only once so far.

-LayDown & Future Soul Song have also been terrific, newer songs that are easy to appreciate live and get a full vocal performance. I could go on, and on and on.....

When the LA shows complete I will post a list of performances that I consider to be the higlights. Until then see you at The Forum.

Not just funk.......BronzeFunk
