Funny how some people are already saying stuff that just isn't true.

I'd say that there were about 10,000 people last night (not bad for a 21 nite stand in LA on a Thursday nite where people still have to work Friday).

Cassandra Willson was really awesome... too short in my opinion. Funky, swampy, and a great gift for us who made it to the show on a weeknight.

Well, by the time Price hit the stage the place was packed and ready to party. I was actually surprised at the energy of the place, around the same it seemed to last thursday night, where there was about 5 thousand more there.

Great setlist (Partyman! YEA!), and More than this was truly beautiful, and completely unexpected.

I don't know if the $10 ticket and free parking rumor are true, but I was happy to pay my $25 for the show and intend to go at least another 5 times. How lucky can you get, to have a show this awesome for so little. I saw a family (mom, dad, 2 kids) having a blast, and when they had people come on stage and party, there was a cute little guy up there having himself a blast and doing something I'm sure he will never forget.

So for you people who just like to talk down and spread negativity about what is going on, all I can say is, I'm sorry you feel so crappy about your life that you have to make such a great thing out to be a failure. I'd look in the mirror when I talk garbage like that...

The April 28th concert was clearly the most unique of Prince's shows so far during this Residency at The Forum. First off, I want to say I had a great, great time, but I want to get some of the particulars out the way: As far as the small crowd...and it was small...it was still lively and from my vantage point, most people were very pleased with the performance. I would agree with the poster that suggests the shows should be only Friday and Saturday nights (maybe even Thursday and Saturday) if WE WERE THE PROMOTERS...but we're not. Our role: fans. And as I've said before Prince embarked on this 21 show extravaganza, this is probably one of the greatest gifts that a musical artist...famous or not...great, good, average, or in-between...has ever provided. Again...it's a gift to US. Scalpers: lose. Staff: some happy, some not so much. Prince's bottom line: fluctuates. But ours' doesn't. Every night, we get something to be thankful for.

If Prince only cared about selling tickets, obviously, he would announce shows further in advance, make promotional deals with all of the local radio outlets, loosen up on his anti-internet stance, ignore what ticket brokers do with his tickets, promote the opening acts more (and make them less secretive), and perform a standard commerically appealing setlist that appeals to the masses. His decision to not do those things should be refreshing to all members of this site, not be points of contention.

As far as the show itself, I enjoyed Joy In Repetition immensely, but I'll admit I prefer the guitar-laced live version. 17 Days was brilliant! And I mean that in a creative, entertaining way, not literal. Even though I was itching for the guitar on J N Rep, I felt something new with Shhh...yes the guitar solos are fabulous...but I enjoyed the version last night just as much and I felt he took the song to an ever higher place, maybe his comic relief, not sure, but I really liked it. Teena Marie tribute was touching, classy, and flat-out good. Because I went to the 14th, 22nd, and 23rd, I didn't mind so many covers, but I would have, if I didn't go to those shows. But I thoroughly enjoyed myself...people have to understand, this was REALLY a party-type show. Fantastic Voyage? Really? Again, in a good way. I've heard him do Play That Funky a bunch of times and this was as great as ever. I had to do a double take when he started Party Man. I know a lot of people have referred to some of his shows before as "parties," but this really was, which is why I was VERY confused with the last song selection. Last night also gave me some insight as to why April 14th was so great...and will never be duplicated again....but despite me knowing this, I would recommend people continue to go and I'm not just saying this for others' sake; I'll be there tonight and tomorrow.

that's a decent turnout & not exactly a small crowd.. wink sounds like people had a cooll time! i don't think anyone wishes hate, it's just a bit alarming when he's mainly had full house up until now & he has set himself quite a target at 21 nights, i hope it doesn't prove tough 2 fill seats even at $10..

might it have something to do with the sports playoffs? my bloke says u got the nhl & basketball going on at the moment & people don't wanna budge their arses from the telly! not even 4 a $10 prince tix?

Thank u 4 that excellent review.....no guitar on Joy? Major brain fart Prince!

Hey peoples, just got home from The Forum. That set list is accurate for the most part but there were some diversions. Here is what went down.

Cassandra Wilson opens at 8:50pm...obviously LATE. We thought there wouldn't be an opener due to the lateness. She performed until 9:20pm. As noted, P came up with her on her third song for a sweet duet. The crowd was appreciative and respectful.

P's set begins at 9:55pm to the chords of Joy In Repetition. I damned near lost my mind...could not believe he was opening with that. After an elongated intro they finally fall into the song and here is what followed.

Joy In Repetition; segued into Brown Skin

(note: P doesn't play guitar during JIR, which disappointed me...but got the orange Fender for Brown Skin and played his face off as Shelby J vocalized)...

17 Days (w/ "Lovergirl" chorus & shout out to Teena Marie)

Sshhhh

Controversy

Which Way Is Up

What Have U Done 4 Me Lately

Partyman

It's Allright

Make U Feel My Love

Misty Blue

Let's Go Crazy

Delirious

1999

Little Red Corvette

Purple Rain

The Bird

Jungle Love

A Love Bizarre

Kiss

Play That Funky Music

Hollywood (Inglewood) Swinging (w/chorus from Lakeside's "Fantastic Voyage")

More Than This (I'm guessing this was the slow song at the end; I didn't recognize it)

OK...re the set itself...this was probably the most FUN show I've seen thus far from start to finish...when I heard the opening chords to "Joy...", I damned near lost my mind because that's my SONG. And then to go into "Brown Skin," with Shelby ripping it up...and then "17 Days," I mean...wow...and then "Sshhhh..." it was over. He could have done whatever else he wanted to do and it would have still been a perfect night.

It was a party vibe from the start. P was very loose, playful...I don't mean that he wasn't into the performance because he most got-damned WAS all over it...he was feelin' good tonight. 1700 or 17,000...it didn't matter to him, he was going to have a good time with those who came out tonight and wasn't nothin' going to stop him from getting down all night long.

There was a joyfulness in tonight's show. I saw opening night 4/14, which we all have heard by now was a special night...I also saw 4/22, where he played stuff from 20Ten but it was a truncated set...90 mins and despite a full Forum crowd begging for more, all we got was a bike ride around the venue. This one was comparably...best word I can say for it was fun. Loose. Despite not playing the solos during "Joy..." and "Ssshhhh," once again he played a gang of guitar the rest of the night. Despite it being how many he times he's played it, he had a particularly good time playing "Purple Rain" tonight...the crowd was really into it, doing the chorus in unison and giving P much love which he felt and gave back.

Now, re the crowd...was surprised to see the colonnade closed off; made me wonder if attendance is beginning to dwindle already. I got my seats Tues through Ticketmaster, Riser seats dead center stage so I was cool...but there were several empty seats throughout the loges...not so much on the floor and VIPs though. If the reports are accurate that the box office was giving away seats for ten dollars then that's not a great sign and even though it was Thursday night, still should have been a stronger crowd. I don't know what is the issue. Apparently many folks don't know about the engagement, there's little to no promotion or people don't understand that it is a residency...I'll have a better idea of what's what tomorrow and Saturday nights but for now, it seems possible that we may not make it to show 21. I am benefitting from this situation by being able to see the greatest performer I've ever seen repeatedly for next to nothing...but there is a sadness to it as well. That place should be packed to the rafters and people should be fighting to get in...all that aside, very, very satisfying and engaging show. Love the way P is changing up the songs so that it feels fresh and new. My brother thinks I'm nuts for going to so many shows but...if you had the chance to see Jimi Hendrix 21 times in his prime before he died, would you have taken it? Eddie Hazel of the original Funkadelic? Donny Hathaway? Miles Davis? Sarah Vaughan? Jaco Pastorius? Randy Rhoads (for you metal guitarists)? I'm going to ride this out with P until the wheels fall off or I get bored, whichever comes first...and I'm nowhere near bored yet. This is a once in a lifetime event...

Sorry for those of you who chose to read-into my picture/post as negative. My intention was to give locals a look at just how many seats were still available (at 8:00pm) and that choice $200 seats were being sold for $10 and $20. Those are facts. The show was a blast and a fantastic, almost unreal bargain for those who could attend.

But maybe lets not be too quick to assume or label someone a hater next time, ok?

I second the posts of utopian811, GDB, and Realtor. The show was a true party. Regardless of the empty seats around me in the $25 loge sec. 5 (I was pissed! I called ticketmaster earlier in the day to see if they could get me one more seat in that section for a friend and they told me it was totally sold out. Haha, NOT. The entire row in front of me was empty but for 3 people, but I digress...) the crowd gave LOVE!!! I loved the crowd around me, dancing like crazy!!!

I loved the outfits! Prince came out on the 3rd encore (the jungle love one) wearing this off tha hook white outfit with these huge fuzzy boots that had red lights that glow when he walks!!! He danced on the piano and invited everybody up on stage and that's when the 3 obnoxious girls totally crossed the line and were like grabbing his butt while he was trying to sing. I was pissed--wanted to whoop some ass! WTF??? So funny he clowned them like, "jersey shore everybody." Ugh. But I liked the encore regardless. He had to end the encore to get away from these dumb bitcxs. Seriously he get away, they cleared the stage and he came right back for Kiss.

For the next encore he put a black shirt over the same white pants and boots with a sweet black hat with studded embellishments, funking it up with the Inglewood Swinging encore. The crowd, which had dwindled by then, really put the effort into getting him back and he played with the house lights on and it was a PARTY!!!

Overall, I have to admit I was a little disappointed in so many covers, but I CANNOT complain. 17 Days?!?! And Partyman! When that song I was looking around (since I was in the loge I had a really good vantage point to watch the crown electric and dancing with energy) I had this moment like: Holy ShXT!!! That was the crowning party moment for me. Goosebumps.

As to the setlist thing, I am just happy that Prince is happy. He was really in top form and dancing and having fun and if he is happy, I am happy because hopefully he will keep playing these shows. They are truly a gift and how much more blessed can we be than to be able to catch even a few of these shows, at $25 at that!!!

THANK YOU PRINCE!!! You are the shit and I love you no matter what you play! You rock my world.

Thanks to everybody on the org too for all the reviews, setlists, and everything else.

XOXO

The Musicology tour did great. He had a very STRANGE marketing idea. I know this is going to sound crazy, but he actually sold tickets 30-90 days in advance. He also played two to two and a half hours every night.

Nobody wants to admit it, but at the very good Carolina shows, he was on stage singing lead for an hour to an hour and a half every night. If you subtract the time Shelby was singing, or the time that Prince was dancing around doing nothing, he did not sing all that much. Not to mention that the cover songs were getting annoying. The Charlotte show was the best, and even that show did not get the slow jam section.

Somebody on here said they want Prince music from Prince. I wish Prince knew that.

I imagine the main reason for the pricing difference is in how much they're having to pay to use the facility. Since The Forum is pretty much dead nowadays, he's probably getting it a lot cheaper than the other facilities. Also, that area of L.A. is hardly affluent. It's not like all of L.A. is Beverly Hills, just like not all of the south is poor.

XOXO

Hey....I was sitting in Loge 5, Row M on the 28th....where were you? I actually had Row E, but I preferred to move up a little bit. Last night, I sat at Floor D, first row. It was fun, great, all those things, but I MUCH prefer to be elevated for this show. I'm not sure why people gush on these threads about being "close" to Prince for this tour. First of all, when he's standing in the middle of the stage, he's not close to ANYONE, and secondly, he moves so much, if he is remotely close to someone...at some point....that means he more often will not be close, so having a full view of stage, light show, and band...to me....is much more appealing. Anybody that has Loge 5, 6, 30, or 31, I will gladly trade floor seats for.

Goosebumps.

My two cents. I guess they were good cents, because my friend Lori ( author of Hollywood Car Wash, which I would recommend to your attention ) posted them on her blog:

holy crap, that looks like an awesome setlist, hope he sticks to it!

he's going to have to announce these shows earlier for the out-of-towners or switch to just Fri/Sat like in Vegas.

eta: and PROMOTE them more, not just on billboards in L.A. or on a cable channel that very few people get. also, put some footage up on YouTube since he/they edited out so much of the live footage in the BTS special. it certainly won't hurt attendance and if something good gets uploaded, it could really help.

TOTALLY DISAGREE!! I counted 10 cover songs. I want to hear Prince sing Prince music, not everyone else's. I do like seeing 17 days and Joy in Repetition though. The rest of the setlist does not look appealing though to me. Did Prince not hear what he said on Lopez and how much he despises covers? And HALF of his show is just that. YUK!!

Did you not hear what Prince also said...that what people don't realize is that he wrote all those songs that people think he plays as covers. Those are his songs so we get nothing other than Prince songs.

Best night of my life! I havent seen Prince since vegas.. so about 4 yrs ago.I asked for every thursday off this month so I pray they dont change Thur nights. I live in Vegas so i left thurs and back to work fri. I bought Loge tix that were awesome! right in front of piano.Y es it was a late start but who cares.... we all know the deal.. The Man starts when hes ready. LUCKY for me I was able to upgrade to Vip .. right by Chris Tucker and Im still wondering who the lady Prince called on stage to sing was???? looked like maybe Fantasia?? I havent read any post about her. Also at the end he threw his hat to a lady that looked to be Nicole from Pussy cat dolls... not sure. Ive been to many shows and soooo close to getting on stage but never happened....until THIS night!!! ohhh lawrd.. MY heart was beat sooo fast when I was walking to my new seat.. Once I saw the stairs up to the stage I told myself this is IT.. tonight im getting up there! Positive thinking.. I did! didnt know what was going on with the girls by the piano cause I was by Reneto next to keyboards. I just thought maybe he had a new silly dance he was calling jersey shore... Like in vegAS at Alladin " I got new dance yall,, its the Ossy Osborne" PEOPLE need to know the rules b4 he stops letting us up to party.. U simply DONT touch the MAN! It was soo unreal.. He stopped and played the keyboards RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!!! Oh Please give the strengh not to faint!!! Nope I didnt.. and when He was singing housequake and telling us to jump up and down.. i swear he smiled and winked at me cause I was the only girl jumpin like crazy in my heels! feet still cursing at me! On my way down I high fived one of the twinz and Shelby was nice enough to shake my hand... I cant wait for more.. This was a blessed night..EVERYBODY MUST GOOOOO...I do love Prince like no other.. but its the truth. best performer EVER..no other Concerts come even close.. everybody dancing and singing all night.. LIVE 4 LOVE wish I could figure out how to post pics from stage view..

POP2000

Has anyone mentioned yet that the duet he and Cassandra did was "When We're Dancing Close and Slow"? A friend e-mailed me his version of the setlist the morning after the show and that was the first thing I noticed. Couldn't post here until today...
