Why does Prince ignore the 90s in Concert?

I was just wondering if anyone knew why he ignores his 90s music? This was when I got into Prince and it is my favorite music. Gold for instance is a CLASSIC anthem live and the whole crowd would be chanting along like in Purple Rain. Why doesn't he play it ever? Gold is not the only one but its the first that came to mind as a classic. Is it because it reminds him of bad times with Warners? or Mayte? Just wondering. I always watch the setlists to decide if I want to go and it seems to always be the same songs.

Well...he ignores everything after 1991...for the most part, but did play Guitar in Greenville, SC of all places. Thieves in the Temple is my fave 90's hit...and he won't touch it. As much as I like Gold, it didn't even approach the top 40, and his show is 80% hits.

Don't think he's played The Most Beautiful since like 1997. Playing a tape of the song for a few seconds during "Prince karaoke" does not count.

Guitar is a 2000's and he played this at Izod on Friday nite.

Coz he knows in his heart what some of us were saying back in the day on AMP etc. His output during the 90s was mainly shit.

Wow I did not realize so many people only liked his 80s stuff. Im not big on the 80s stuff as it is just too old and dated for me. I really got in to him in the 90s and 2000s so I wish he would play a good mix of it all. I guess Im the only one. He is the only artist I have seen live that wont play new stuff. REALLY WEIRD!! Im glad other artists are not like that. I guess nowadays with Prince its not worth it for me to shell out that type of money to see the same songs again. Thanks for the responses. I was debating on if it was worth going but its really not. Maybe one day he will play some newer material!!

Yeah I know. I forgot to include "at least he played a recent song." Of course, I could have included that the guitar part in Guitar is from U2's I Will Follow. The majority of the show is 1980-1991. The earliest track I remember was Uptown, and the latest was the ones from Diamonds And Pearls until he played Guitar.

Yeah I guess Prince is stuck in that status of only having 10-20 songs that people know. I guess he did that to himself though since he wont promote crap. I guess we are stuck with the same ol crap every tour. Man I miss the glory days of The Rainbow Children tour, Symbol album, JOTY, D&P, Gold Tour.....ahhhhhh...Those were the days!! Well...off to see some other shows. Next up for me I got U2, Weird Al and Hall and Oates. This will be my first time seeing Hall and Oates. Should be fun!! Oh and whats cool is I got all three shows for the price of one Prince ticket so it worked out great.

i like the fact that some on this website wanna diss his material past the 80's and say it was shit etc..yet everytime a thread like this comes on, it totally DISPROVES this fact. some grew up and some got stuck with that damn linn machine. 4 those that get stuck in the 80's then u should be required 2 wear the same shit u wore in the 80's 2 this day.

now as 4 when it's said that if he did play songs past the 80's and wouldn't recognize the songs, this is not just prince's fault but it's the fans fault equally as well. because prince took a stand about the corruption of the music business he was blacklisted. yes he was blacklisted from all sorts of media outlets but yet his hardcore and dedicated fans still found the music and grew 2 love that music. now what's ur excuse? regardless of what prince may say on stage, any true musician loves 2 move forward but sometimes can't due his or her fan base cause they are stuck on nostalgia. someone of prince's calibur of work should NEVER be held back 2 express their craft.

emancipation break the chains y'all let him be all that he can be. it's high time prince breaks his own chains and if that means playing in smaller venues so be it cause those that have supported him 4 so long deserve the escape of the playing it safe greatest hits shit that has been going on since the musicology tour.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Nice list but unless the venue was only packed with die hards nobody would know any of these with the exception of 7. I witnessed the change in the audiences excitement at MSG when he performed Dreamer. Most in attendance didn't know what it was or where it was from. I'd like to hear more obscure tracks too. Until Prince feels comfortable playing only to his hardcore fanbase that's not likely to happen on the regular. I don't consider Prince money-grubbing but he's developed a lifestyle he's used to and wishes to maintain. Selling out the Hammerstein Ballroom isn't going to provide for that. The hits are his bread and butter. He'll always throw in a surprise here and there but a setlist like yours is wishful thinking.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Give me a frakin' break! Prince wasn't blacklisted from ANYTHING!!! When Prince "took a stand" he got more publicity than he had for years. He was EVERYWHERE. Sure most of the time he was being made fun of, but as they say any publicity is good publicity.

The 90s has his best music in my opinion. I liked him in the 80s but the 90s stuff blew me away!! It was his best stuff hands down to me. I hate its all lost in Prince's eyes and he wont play it. Hell, he wont even play the 2000's stuff. It must really suck to be hi mand have to play the same ol songs night in and night out. I know I hate playing the same stuff and wont. I understand why he doesnt tour much anymore. It HAS TO BE boring for him.

I liked almost mid-90's Prince because he was angry.....because he had a "FUCK YOU" attitude. The music was pretty good at times, but Prince had lost something in my eyes. He also actually had a band again: Sonny T, Mike B, Mr. Hayes and Tommy had the potential to be a real band, a real cohesive unit....they had the charisma, the style and the talent.....but Prince fucked it all up before they could really grow.

The 80's are superior compared to the 90's,

but I agree he could play some songs more often:

Endorphinemachine (played recently 'aftershow')

Chaos & Disorder

I Like It There

Joy In Repetition

Elephants & Flowers

The Love We Make

Empty Room

Money Don't Matter Tonight

Gotta love the Org! You do realize that we're talking about the 90's, and Musicology and Call My Name came out in the 2000's? disbelief ANYWAY, during the 90's Prince was on more late-night talk shows than any time in the 80's. No his videos nor his new music weren't in heavy rotation but that wasn't because he was blacklisted it was because it was the times. Hip-Hop and grunge were the dominant music genres so of course Prince and 80's artists in general got less airtime. Prince did Oprah for the first time in the 90's. Prince had VH-1 specials in the 90's. Everyone talked about Symbolina, Squiggly and TAFKAP in the 90's. He wasn't blacklisted.....he just started to suck!
