Whoever introduced Prince (Sinbad?) was saying things like "this is the last time", and "this is it", and "this will never happen again". Did any of you catch that? What did that mean? Do you think this is the last time he's gonna play in the U.S.? I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet.
I thoroughly enjoyed the show, greatest hits setlist or not. "Uptown", "Let's Work", and "Welcome 2 America"... Two old-school songs and a brand new one. Not bad. A FULL rendition of "Purple Rain", played at the correct tempo, not the rushed version, with several false endings just to come back in. Man, the LOW notes/chords he was playing towards the end of that guitar solo were AWESOME. Full orchestral ending... "Baby I'm a Star" was cool. I like the reworked "The Beautiful Ones".
Sheila is so HOT! I have always thought so, but damn! She looked just as good or better than she did in '87-'88! Yeah, I'm gonna say even better.
Larry played like a motherfunker, I loved the drumline entrance, it reminded me of "Sign O' the Times" live from '87 when the band would come out with the drums at the end.
Some guy spilled some beer on my back towards the beginning of the show, and I had to turn around and tell him to keep his shit under control, dude denied it was him, bullshit. That was the only bad part about the show and I got over it pretty quick even though it WAS my 1988 Lovesexy tour t-shirt. It's just beer, I guess. Douchebag.
Yeah, the concert was over a bit sooner than I had hoped, but I didn't even think I was going to get to go to any of these shows. When I got home from work on Friday night, my wife surprised me with the tickets. I nearly shit my pants. That reminds me, somebody in our section (317) was letting some SERIOUS STINKING farts during the show. That would be the other bad part of the show (not that it was part of the actual show).
Had a blast, and I would totally go again if my schedule allowed.
P.S. Be thankful he plays at all. After 76 times seeing him live, you are bound to be jaded. No hating here, just perspective. [Edited 12/19/10 22:51pm] I'm just saying...

OMG I forgot to tell y'all that a guy in my section tripped and fell down the stairs, hit his head on the wall or the steps or something and passed the hell OUT. He was unconscious for at least 5 minutes or so. Dude wasn't moving we were afraid he was dead, folks were saying that they didn't feel a pulse (altho getting a pulse isn't as easy as people think it is.. u have to position your fingers correctly on the wrist otherwise youll get nothing).
Anyway paramedics came and worked with him until he regained consciousness and he was able to walk with them and they took him out. But this was before even Sinbad came out so I'm thinking he ended up missing the whole show! If that was me I'da be like "nah I'm okay, leave me here!" I've been anticipating this show since I went to the announcement at the Apollo, ain't no way I'm missing it! I'll go to the ER or something after Prince leaves the building. Prince esta muerto...

I do remember hearing Sinbad say all that "this is the last time" stuff, but these singers/entertainers always talking bout "This is the last tour" and they be out on the road again a year later.

Plus, the girls sitting right next to us had some too. They didn't smoke it in front of us though. I think they did it in the bathroom right before Prince came out. Prince Rogers Nelson

u seriously need 2 stop putting images in my head ..oh wait prince did ask if nyc had dirty minds and i did yell back ..YES!!! man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

i'll answer this question with another question : who's fault is that that the "causal" fan doesn't know his other songs past say ...1986? is that prince's fault? and should the artist of so such said work have 2 suffer that "casual" fan not knowing what time it is?
there is a price 2 pay 4 fame and selling ur soul but there is a time when u stand up and say NO ..now if prince got regulated 2 just a smaller venue 2 show his diehard fans love ..i'm down with that cause the diehards will know that there is more 2 prince than just purple rain.
a body of work is just that .. A BODY ..not just the fingers and arms ..but a whole BODY
i got some ice cream wanna a bite? man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I had a blast! It was great meeting everyone at BBQs! My niece's first Purple show. I've corrupted her. She's scheduling a tat appointment to get the symbol on her! I loved Uptown-memories of Chicago days. I think we were the only ones in my section that recognized it. I will never hate on Mr Graham again. That man put on a Funk Bass clinic. And Shiela E! She saved the night for Prince, like Daddy used to for Santana, with her energy.
Good show-too short. Get rid of the opening acts please. We need more time. The whole 'maybe an aftershow at the Apollo' was messed up. Prince better be glad he has great fans. It was too cold for those games.
Late post due to work. In Seattle eating salmon. See you guys on the 29th! since Run & Them were saying "Here we go"

yes in my section it was fine until prince showed up and i smelt it 4 times during the course of the show. what worries me is the kids in the audience that have 2 smell that bullshit during a show. if i go 2 wrestling match at the garden i don't smell it but why all the time during a music event? damn music itself is a high why the need 2 ruin other peoples enjoyment of the music by smelling that shit? man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

That is why I think going to a "Prince Celebration" type format would be great. Something like he has done at PP with PLENTY of notice ,so we can arrange travel, and he can jam whatever onscure stuff his little heart desires and we would eat it up. Now this is not an oppotunity for him to fill us with more covers but do songs that we all know but don't hear at arena shows as there is more pressure to do the more well known stuff. Even still, there is plenty of opportunity to play lesser known hits inthe arean shows he is just not strtching his legs enough. How about pull out something like Lady Cab Driver, private Joy, Soft and Wet just to name a few.

Interesting discussion! Prince is mainly a pop whore, then comes the artist...

Prince rolls out hits for New York fansNEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) – In a career filled with idiosyncratic twists and turns, Prince made one of his more baffling choices at Madison Square Garden Saturday night, the first New York City date of his Welcome 2 America tour -- he actually gave the people what they wanted. While many of the prolific star's past shows have veered into unfamiliar territory filled with obscurities and lengthy funk instrumental jams, this one was a crowd-pleasing compendium of '80s hits, many of them culled from his landmark Purple Rain and 1999 discs. And while he comically groused at one point by muttering, "Too many hits," he played them with a freshness and ferocity that thrilled the sold-out crowd. From "Baby I'm a Star" to "Kiss," he re-explored his vintage catalog as if playing the songs for the first time. And while the evening was short on spectacle, it was long on musical excitement, with the 52-year-old star displaying the charisma and stamina of his youth while backed by a band that couldn't have been any tighter. The audience roared at the opening chords of each familiar number, from "The Beautiful Ones" (performed with the accompaniment of a sexy ballet dancer) to "Let's Go Crazy" to "Delirious" to "Raspberry Beret" to "Nothing Compares 2 U" to "Purple Rain." The only cover songs on display, Sylvester's "Dance (Disco Heat)" and The Time's "Cool," were melded seamlessly into the proceedings. Performing on a stage shaped like his trademark glyph symbol, the star seemed in excellent spirits, striking guitar god poses for his frequent solos and frequently breaking into his trademark dance workouts. He reserved his most stunning moves for "Kiss," delivering a precisely calibrated routine of hip and shoulder-popping break-dance style contortions. Former collaborator Sheila E. was brought out to thunderous applause for a duet on "U Got the Look" and a lengthy solo on "The Glamorous Life" that allowed Prince time for a costume change. They also collaborated for the encore, "A Love Bizarre," with Prince inviting seemingly every celebrity in attendance to join him onstage. The disparate group -- including Tavis Smiley, Spike Lee, Naomi Campbell, Jamie Foxx, Sinbad, John Leguizamo and others -- happily danced with abandon, although the sight of Whoopi Goldberg and author Cornell West boogieing together was surely one of the stranger things ever seen at the Garden. As is his wont, Prince picked one of his musical inspirations as the opening act. On this show. it was Graham Central Station, whose leader, bass player Larry Graham, commented that it was his first time performing at the venue since he appeared as part of Sly & the Family Stone. The headliner briefly joined them for a raucous medley of that group's hits, including such classics as "Family Affair" and "Everyday People."

I'll answer it with a question..is it the casual fans fault Prince doesn't play what some diehards want to hear at some of his shows? Absolutely not, we all have our own tastes in his music, and some of the songs he plays at larger or smaller venues, will not be all that every fan wants to hear. We could go back and forth on this issue, but I don't have that kind of time to waste right now.
No thanks on the ice cream, I'm sure it's not my flavor, but thanks for the offer. Have a good day. [Edited 12/20/10 6:51am]
